Yes, nitrous bottles can explode if heated too much. I’ve seen a few horror stories where someone left a bottle heater on for too long and the tank pressure caused the bottle to explode. People put torches to the bottle as well which can soften the aluminum and sometimes cause an explosion.

The explosion from the compressed gas will blow up under pressure, but its not flammable. It will not cause a fireball.

News flash nitrous bottles are supposed to be equipped with a blow off valve so if the pressure becomes too great the valve blows off the pressure. If the bottle blows its because a dumb ass installed it and didn't put a safety valve on it.

Every nitrous bottle I've ever owned had a pressure relief valve with a 3000psi burst disk. Don't tamper with the burst valve and don't use a blow torch to heat the bottle!

Really? Not from what the guys at Irwindale drag strip tell me , infact they use N20 all time without any problems, it's only bad for you engine if you dont know the correct spread ! And that's the jet spread or if you're using way too much on a stock engine! Infact I would never use it on anything other than a built engine !

Depending how much you spray you need to pull timing too. You can counter the need to pull timing if you spray water/methanol at the same time

Yeah I agree with most of what you said, but nitrous backfires or bottle explosions can happen and technically “blow up” your car. A bottle bursting at 1000 + psi isn’t gonna be a little pop, you’ll lose windows and lives if you are in there with it.

So true . Even the crude kits in the past had a micro switch that mounted on the carb . The toggle switch inside was just to activate the system.

A nitrous bottle should always be around 1100 psi. They can explode but it will not be a flame explosion it will be a pressure explosion and its brutal and it will blow up your car/trailer/garage/house etc because of the metal thickness its a huge explosion. It happens when people have old outdated bottles that have had years of torching to get the bottle psi up. Get a bottle heater, a blowdown tube, a gauge, and fresh bottle and nitrous is pretty safe if your tune up is right.

The correct term is nitrous or nitrous oxide, not NOS. NOS (Nitrous Oxide Systems) is the name of a brand, just like Nitrous Express and Nitrous Outlet.

There must be a sufficient and gap on the compression rings. An end gap that is too tight wont allow the compression ring the extra expansion it will encounter under the increased heat and cylinder pressure. When the gap closes completely and the ring still needs to expand, it will break. Having a broken compression ring is having a bad day. On some engines, piston ring replacement is a must before nitrous can be run safely. A wise person confirms whether or not their engine is one of these before bolting up a nitrous system.

Exactly call it Nitrous or the squeeze, N20, but not Noss ! And Holly owns Nos Nitrous oxide systems, who bought It from uncle Mike thermos who runs Nitrous supply over in Huntington Beach CA, yes I know him and his son Johnny and his worker motorcycle Mike and his receptionist Nancy! They are a great bunch of people and do business with them regularly, it's the only place I take my bottles to get filled !

Of course if NOS is not used properly

I love the sweet sweet sound of rods bouncing around in my engine bay and the big giant hole on the side of my block and the oil leaking everywhere makes me nostalgic

If for some reason your car catches on fire, you can disconnect your nitrous bottle and use the nitrous to extinguish the fire

I think alot of accidents are from the bottles themselves.Its common with other compressed gasses like CO2.People drop them breaking toes and there have been accidents where the bottles became a projectile and someone was struck by it.This happens when the valve allows gas to escape.Years ago a woman was killed when her son disconnected a CO2 bottle from a paintball gun.

If you have Nos in your car and you DO have a fire, that tank is a shrapnel bomb.

There’s an additive in racing NOS that’s highly toxic and meant to kill people who inhale it. It’s a huge liability. Anyone can go down to a restaurant supply store and buy a case of cartridges, there’s no need to poison racing NOS.

A hot enough fire with the pressurized nos converted to nitrogen (g) + oxygen (g) quickly spreading could lead to an oxygen explosion. Only not as big as this. It's same as cars with LNG as a fuel. It would take bottle of NOS to be already surrounded by intense heat that would increase the pressure so much to cause it to explode, meaning your car would have to be on fire already.
