Abandoned & Forgotten Places
Documenting abandoned mines like never before!
Let's take abandoned mine exploring to the next level!
With your support you can help make this the best abandoned mine exploring channel on KZread!
Shot entirely in 4K! ...so, turn up those video settings!
On this channel we go deep... REALLY DEEP into abandoned mines and tunnels all throughout the western United States. We researched some of the harder to find mines and hiked or 4x4 back into them to explore and reveal their hidden secrets. Many of these remote locations are filled with cool artifacts, antiques and unique geology that will have you guessing as to why the old prospectors worked so hard to find gold, silver, and other minerals.
A&FP moves just a bit slower as compared to other mine exploring channels. Gly discusses why the miners chose these sites and he points out the geology and minerals that got them excited. Veins of quartz filled with gold and silver made many men lose sleep in the 1800’s and early 1900’s and modern prospecting still does to this very day.
DANGERS? Oh yes, there’s allot of dangers associated with old mines. Un-exploded dynamite, blasting caps, bad air, bats, spiders, and snakes all find their home in abandoned mine shafts and tunnels. Oh, and let’s not forget rotting timbers, flooded passages and collapsing rock!
Gly takes abandoned mine exploring seriously with all the proper safety equipment, training, and experience necessary to do this activity as safe as possible but that doesn’t mean we can’t have a bit of fun along the way. “Gly”, your host and his band of crazy characters “Old Bob” (Gly’s Jeep), “Quackers” (Gly’s duck) and “Bobbie” (Gly’s hula girl) are sure to brighten your day with their comments and silly antics. Heck, they may even give you a chuckle or two.
Just like Saturday morning cartoons before the internet was invented, Abandoned and Forgotten Places uploads each Saturday at 7:00AM PST. (that’s 10:00AM for you eastern folks) so don’t forget to click that subscribe button and bell icon to receive notifications of new episodes!
Please LIKE, SHARE, SUBSCRIBE and COMMENT! All these things help grow our channel and your financial support helps us find new locations and helps put fuel into “Old Bobs” tank. Old Bob, thanks you!
Ok, now for the ugly stuff...

I’m an addict of Gly’s channel - watch in UK. And I too love most of the music Gly has used in his videos - so much so that I’ve bought many of the full tracks off Amazon; and I’ve used a few of these as background sounds on the On30 narrow gauge model railroad I’m building “Black Dog Mine”. Loosely set in southwestern US (period late 1800s to late 30s). Of course I also have dynamite exploding sounds; crickets chirping; coyotes howling; machinery noises, etc 🤣 🚢🇬🇧🚂⛏

In your opening "credits" you show the open pit mine with the large stope-like opening in the far wall. I remember that episode. Are you going to get back to that area and continue that exploration?
@AbandonedandForgottenPlaces
7 ай бұрын
“Gly”: Episodes 66 - 69 were all from that area. We explored every adit in the area except for the drifts that can be seen on the benches of the open pit. We determined that those benches have too much loose rock on the edge to safely rope down to the exposed drifts.
wow that was outstanding and awesome mines yall are awesome happy new years and god bless be safe take care
Everytime, I see flooded mines, flooded winzes, flooded shafts, and I just wonder, what is down there. What, if there is a train of ore cars down there, or the biggest deposit of ore still down there, or miner's pants, or even the biggest chamber down there. Thanks Gly and Laura, and a Happy New Year. Edit #1: Is the stope at 21:45, bigger than the one you saw at thunder ridge? Edit #2: Isn't this shaft part at 32:40 the part with the grate, you threw a rock down it and heard that it did not go far? I think you guys are just on a lower level.

Ore cars wouldn't surprise me. We have a couple of ore cars, an EIMCO 12B overshot mucker, and an air trammer underwater at a gold mine in New Mexico. When we pump it out (hopefully next year), we'll grease everything, change the gear case oil in the mucker, and put it back in service. It was all underwater from 2015-2019 and did just fine. A jackleg drill or two was also left in a flooded stope. The drill was brought up, benched, and did just fine with some replacement parts.

Welcome back Laura!
Great explore Gly & Laura, those stopes were amazing, the amount of effort to clear those must have been astounding. That water table being around 50ft below that haulage level, wouldn't it be possible to mine into the mountain further down and break into that flooded stope area and drain it, also, if those ladders went down, the submerged ones, then there is a drift there, why didn't the miners drift back out to make a lower haulage audit ?
@AbandonedandForgottenPlaces
7 ай бұрын
“Gly”: Your exactly right and that’s what I would’ve done if that was my mine. I would’ve put the haulage adit much lower on the hill to help de-water the ore body. Let gravity do the work instead of spending all that money on fuel for the pumps.

Good job Laura in handling camera and commenting.
You got me with that bad air ,hahaha
Hello G & L, Laura, you missed a nicely framed timber in that trash drift. I have a theory and everyone can tell me why I'm wrong. Just past the headframe area, the mine narrows down and there is evidence of where ties were in the floor. It looks like the mine originally was operated with rail haulage. Later, the part of the main haulage to the headframe was widened out so wheeled haulage could be used. I'm thinking that the lower and upper parts of the mine would have retained rail haulage.
@AbandonedandForgottenPlaces
7 ай бұрын
“Gly”: I agree. The late 1800’s and early 1900’s workings that had rail were obliterated by the more modern workings. When we go back for Part 3 we’re going to attempt to find the older workings in the higher levels.
I like the speed-up music
At 11:50 = Where we use to dive from, some pretty cool diving in that stope with two drifts about 75'. At 2:13 when looking at or shoot there was an tomb of a minor marker with carbide a cross and RIP. Had to crawl on belly to reach it 25 years ago. I'm surprised to see the head-frame not level with water as it always was. Must be pumping it hard these days. Can't imagine the extreme levels of copper sulfides in it to be good for anything to drink.
@AbandonedandForgottenPlaces
7 ай бұрын
“Gly”: Yes, you could see that at one time the water levels in there were much higher. They are actively siphoning the water out of the mine and putting it into holding tanks lower on the hill. You’re right, the copper sulfide levels must be high but safe enough for animals.

Question: the big room at about 21:30, did the miners make it or was that a void in the mountain?
@denyscpoyner
7 ай бұрын
It was mined out, typically called a "ballroom" because of the enormous size. Looks like they tunneled through some rich ore and decided to "high grade" all the good stuff which created the massive room. Hope this helps.
@AbandonedandForgottenPlaces

Enjoyed the video. My question this week: is all that water contaminated with toxic chemicals from the mining? Could it be pumped out n used for irrigation in some places? Have u ever seen it done?
@AbandonedandForgottenPlaces

Oh yeah! you went back to using your previous "intro" music. That "intro" always gives a viewer a sense of some excitment & suspense, coming up. As you're climbing on ea. pile within the stopes, the soil has a yellow tinge to it or is it that be cause of the light of your camera? (looks like alot of Sulfur in the soil.) Breathing that in, if that would be Sulfur, is a health hazard. At 21:17, those edges did look like a "slippery slope". It made me uneasy for you two. Laura looks "sure footed" but I am anxious for her & YOU! Stay away from those edges of ore passes & stope openings!! At 34:44, eek! watch out Laura! thats another slope!! That was a spectacular mine! LOTS of work was done by "no fear" miners, in the day. Thanks for showing us this "explore".
