    There's no guarantee the world you wake up in each day is the same one you went to sleep in. Not even your own memories can be trusted because misremembering things is possible. So take solace in the hope that you might one day wake back up in the original timeline where none of this stuff happened. This offshoot has gotten dark.

What I will say to the OP here is to make sure to take the spirit of Kentaro's work to heart. Rage and anger is not the way. (lol at least I'm pretty sure that's at least an aspect of his work, I'm only a handful of volumes deep into this series. This… makes me genuinely sad. Miura poured his literal life into the manga, as his death was caused by complications from a medical condition caused by him overworking. And to hear all these people, pick on one of the story’s darker moments to show how *monstrous* and inhumane an actual demon is… it hurts. Because that’s not what Berserk is about. Berserk is about even when you’re at your absolute lowest, you can keep going on. You can make things better. Guts is someone who against all odds struggles and thrashes against the life dealt to him, and being honest? He achieved the impossible because he never gave up, even when he didn’t even know himself why he did. And the art, and the expressions paint such a vivid story… I understand not everyone can stomach the gore or the nudity. But to discredit a man’s life work and to say he should burn in hell… how shallow and insensitive can you be?

    Berserk was one of the first mangas I actually sat down and read and honestly, it was very cathartic to read. I had a lot of my life change in the course of a few months and it brought with it a severe wave of depression and anxiety that I couldn’t shake off, like I was fighting a battle that couldn’t be won. Seeing Guts go through a literal gauntlet made of hellish nightmares, yet refusing to give up and continuing to fight despite being branded for sacrifice, really inspired me. No matter what he went through and what he lost, he continued to fight on. Hell, I wear a ring with the brand of sacrifice just as a reminder to what the manga helped me see. It’s a shame the people complaining about it are judging it simply upon surface value. Yes, the imagery and themes are pretty horrific and disturbing, but it also makes those moments where the characters overcome them so much more impactful. Plus I’m sorry, life is not cushy like the detractors want it to be; it can be brutal and unforgiving and it’s full of people who will be cruel and wicked, but you can do your best to fight against it where you can.

So to see a bunch of hypersensitive Twitter crybabies talk so much trash about Miura and his work while missing the point of everything is honestly kind of infuriating, but not at all surprising. Their tears just make me want to work harder to be a good writer and artist though because even if they hate me, doing what I love is better than getting validation from crybabies. I feel like that's something a lot more people should resonate with. Thanks for making this video Gundam! I really hoped you would after seeing that one tweet in one of your previous videos.

    Many scenes throughout the manga depicted this twitter fodder. The masses of empty husks of flesh with no independent thought mindlessly following the first idol that shows up in front of them. I wouldn't take it too personally. There will always be people who are more content piggybacking off an opinion rather than taking the time to research and formulating one themselves.

They simply choose to cherry pick out of context pages and panels because they depict something they don't like and everyone else just gasps in horror. In the end though, the opinions of Twitter users matters very little to me even if it is annoying. I'm still gonna have fun reading "horrible offensive" manga and drawing/writing "horribly offensive" content because it makes me happy.

    That's the problem. Seemingly every Twitter user is the type who thinks the sun revolves around the Earth. They think everything is made for them and them alone, and if they don't like it, they will scream at someone until they are blue in the face. They will complain until some corporation steps in to act like their mothers and shield them from the harsh reality they just saw, until they ruin everything for the rest of us. Just wish there were some corporations that would take the place of their father instead and tell them to grow up. Art imitates reality. The art in Berserk, while some of it highly imaginative and fantastical (or interpretive), could not exist if it wasn't based on things that can and do happen. Manga and anime are not the same as western cartoons... they are not made strictly for children. So yes, there are sexually explicit acts and violent themes in the story. Many western stories have those as well. Anyway I went off on a tangent. Point being I agree with you, not every book, anime, manga, or movie will be for everyone. Either you like it or you don't. If you don't, move on and find something you do like. That is how the rest of a civilized society works.

He did not go into gory detail George R.R. Martin style, but established that things like babies being crushed against walls was a thing. I find it odd that twitter folks who often call for violence against real people get offended when authors show violence against fake people. As soon as they said this didn't happen in medieval times I wanted to smash my head against a wall. The various forms of torture seen in Berserk can all be traced to real life torture methods that have been recorded in medieval history. There are a few that are more 1600s inspired but most of these are from the late medieval period which is around the time Berserk is technologically. People need to realize that these types of torture and punishment methods weren't really stopped in favor of more humane methods until the mid 1700s. And this more humane method was simple hanging where there were rules to stop prolonged suffering by simply stabbing or shooting them. It wasn't until the 1800s when the modern form of hanging which grants instantaneous death was invented.

    Not to sound like a know it all, the Greek word “Hamartia” is the common word used for sin in the New Testament. Which fits really great with the explanation of the story arc and your observation. I don’t just reference from a void, I am a Christian, (full on card carrying Jesus loving/following Protestant evangelical since we like labels) but I love great story. Berserk is a modern classic. Love how such rich and compelling storytelling comes from pages of manga. It is hard getting through some of the more gory stuff and I will skip the graphic sex scenes but it doesn’t detract from the arc. Thanks for standing up for good stories Gundam and for fighting against the neutering of every heroic tale.

    I'm a woman here, and I really like Berserk. I honestly think it's my favorite manga. The point of showing Wyald with the dead bodies of women and children is to show us what are apostles. Wyald had no semblance of morality or empathy and took sadistic pleasure in his actions. It's meant to make you uncomfortable, it's meant to show the depravity within humanity when all that makes us human is lost. The rape of Casca is disgusting. It makes my skin crawl, it's absolutely horrible. It's meant to do that though. I remember watching the movie with my boyfriend and he was absolutely disgusted by it and he felt like it really shows what trauma does to a person. However, the entire eclipse scene is meant to be that way. We've seen how inhuman an apostle is, imagine one of the God Hand that create those monsters. We are shown absolute evil, hell, the God figure is literally called the Idea of Evil. These Twitter users are literally just taking everything at face value with none of the context behind it. It's meant to be disgusting, no one is reading berserk, wishing that they were Wyald. No one sees themselves in something so inhuman.

    1) It's *dark* fantasy for a reason. Darker themes, tones, and scenes are all what the genre thrives on. 2) Yes, sexual assault is a thing in Berserk, just like it is in real life, and art imitates life more often then not. For people that complain a lot that a show/movie/comic isn't realistic enough for not having enough people that look and fuck like them, you sure to have an issue when realistic problems are depicted in fiction. 3) Most of the time, the sex in Berserk is consensual anyway, so even the logic that it's designed to be some grand male rape fantasy is flawed at best. 4) If your *only* takeaway across several volumes, movies, and other medium for the series is the treatment of less than a handful of women compared to the hundreds of men who have also suffered just as bad, if not worse, then you've either never read the manga or you missed the bigger point of the narrative entirely. The rape of Casca, for example, wasn't just rape for the sake of it; it was a calculated move by Griffith to break Guts, and you can argue Casca too, due to her going insane after the incident and her and Guts' child becoming corrupted. It's supposed to showcase Guts on the verge of losing everything. Therefore, when he goes after Griffith for revenge, he therefore has nothing left to lose. If Berserk isn't for you, fine. If you're put off by the content, then fine, because admittedly these can be pretty heavy topics. But for the love of God, let people enjoy a fictional work. It's not hurting anyone, and the gore, violence, and terrible things that go on serve a purpose; it's not just mindless. I don't see anyone saying anything about how sick the author of Kite Runner is, and that book also featured child rape throughout the entire book. Oh, but the children were male, so I guess it's whatever. 🙄

    I'm still curious what exactly attracts people to "dark fantasy". I mean, isn't fantasy all about escapism in the first place? Because if so... what kind of person you have to be, what kind of impulses should be driving you if a world of endless abject torture is where you escape to?.. I'd understand if you were a closet sadist, enjoying depictions of suffering as you don't have the balls to do it for real and be next Jack The Ripper - or if you were a warzone kid imprinted with strife unending, defined by their trauma, who just can't comprehend normal life even after getting immersed in it; or something else along the lines. But as I see it, both are exceptions, even among a niche fanbase, so there must be something else. I've heard people saying it's kinda spicier that way, but, again, _what_ makes that spice - well, spicy - for you and why? What drives and desires make you _look for even more pain_ than the reality provides in ample quantities?

  • @chidorisnake22

    @@Hisu0 Escapism can come in several forms. For some, it could be a place where they could be anyone or anything, it could be a place of pure bliss, or alternatively, it could be where their darkest thoughts and fears are fleshed out to help them either embrace or conquer them. No one has one way of escaping reality, and almost every way is valid.

  • @hawkticus_history_corner

    @hawkticus_history_corner

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@Hisu0 There's many reasons, but I'll give two here. Well, three because some people just like Horror which Berserk and Dark Fantasy have in spades. 1: Negative Escapism. Not sure if this is an actual phrase, but I'm using it. Basically, feeling better about your current situation because you're seeing someone who is in such a worse position. You feel life kinda sucks, so you read berserk, see how much Guts life sucks and then feel better because yours is like... 10% as bad. 2. Light is more powerful the deeper the dark. This one is simple, the heroes are more heroic if the evil they fight is more evil. They don't have to be perfect (preferable if they aren't, they just have to try to be good) but seeing even flawed people fight abject monsters, that have no care or feeling for life or decency heightened that heroism because the cost of failure is so much higher. There's also the fact that escapism doesn't mean that you want to be there. I enjoy Warhammer 40k, but sweet fuck do I not wanna go their. That universe is brutal violent and ugly, its also taken to such an extreme it hits parody levels (thus the term GrimDerp) and then its just a black comedy. But its also full of exciting badasses, honor, courage, valor, and lots and lots of sweet fights. Escapism just means you use it to forget about the world for awhile, and that can be a horror as easily as a comedy. Fantasy gets dark, how dark is up to your comfort level. Some of us are happy to walk into the jaws of hell, just to watch a beat up man punch it in the face.

    I'm currently reading through this right now. The Berserk manga is much more explicit with its s3ggs, v10lence, and s3ggshual v10lence. It is not for the faint of heart or stomach. It's absolutely brutal, remorseless, and puts the characters through H3ll on earth. They have to fight against impossible odds and looming hopelessness. And yet, in spite of living in such a crapsack world, *the theme of hope and fighting against the doom brought by wicked supernatural entities is persistent in the series.* It's a heavy read, but it's also got humorous moments. There's character growth, tragedy, and beauty from the ashes. Some _slightly_ spoiler-y bits below. *BEFORE YOU READ* There's a lot of s3ggs scenes and s3ggshual content. Most of them aren't meant to be... pleasant. They're often juxtaposed with a nigh-dark ages crapsack world morality, where people take what they want, out of greed or simply to survive. I haven't finished the manga, but to my knowledge, there's only one intimate scene that's meant to be loving and, for lack of a better term, to be enjoyed. It's also a dramatic moment combined with character growth. There's criticism of Spanish Inquisition-type pseudo-Christianity. It's well done, and I say this as a Christian. This Inquisition-type religion in one arc is juxtaposed against their enemy, a heretical s3ggs/0rjy cult that also practices human sacrifice. Specifically, _child_ sacrifice. Are you familiar with people sacrificing their infants to Molech in the Bible? Yeah, about that... There's also cannibalism in this cult. It's one of the most horrific arcs in Berserk, and Miura spares no detail showing it in *ALL* of its vile depravity. It's meant to shock and horrify. If you have a weak stomach, you may stop reading there. It was brutal to read. There's lots of grape and attempted grape, minus the G. Crapsack world, remember? Guts lives up to his name and spills a *lot* of guts. This is a very violent comic. Much of the story line follows Guts' life as a mercenary. Oh, also... Guts' very backstory. From the very time he was born, his life sucked. Just read to find out about that. Oh, and a definite trigger warning: *_Donovan._* I'm not exaggerating with the term trigger warning. As I've said, this manga is VERY graphic with its s3ggs, v10lence, and s3ggshual v10lence. To explain why "Donovan" needs a trigger warning, this may be a hint: Guts "meets" Donovan when he's only 9 years old. At *night.* And not by choice. You do the math as for what that means. And yet, in spite of all the vicious brutality I listed here, Berserk is an excellent manga because it shows the good and bad in characters. It has a cohesive plot. It has character development. The characters are face hopelessness and adversity, yet still try to fight against the darkness in their world. You want to cheer these people on. You want to see them win. 10 out 10, and I haven't even finished the series. --------- Of course the Twitter thots are going berserk about Berserk. These are the same morons who criticize all the s3ggshual v10lence in the manga and yet probably consent to s3ggshual v10lence in the form of BDSM and whatever other YAAAAS KWEEN hypocritical cult ideals are out there. Of _course._ Yes, the apostles in Berserk are meant to be apostles of the *demonic* "godhand". They're apostles of evil. And of course the Twitter thots don't understand evil people are meant to be *evil,* because all they know is social "justice" and being woke instead of actually being grounded in reality. "We'd all be in jail with these types of *thot* processes." ZING! -I know it's actually "thought". -_-I don't care.-_ These people need to go touch grass. Then again, I don't think they could do that without cutting their finger.
