The Day The Blue Lagoon Turned Into A Volcanic Paradise

Two weeks after our last volcano update, reporters Alina Maurer and Art Bicnick make their way to the tranquil tourist paradise of the Blue Lagoon. After the most recent eruption began on May 29 and an initial closure, the spa continued to restart operations - with a bubbling crater just 3 kilometres from the famous milky Blue Lagoon.
Since then, the facility was forced to close down multiple times. Lava flooded one of the roads leading to the lagoon and heavy gas pollution pestered the area for some time. Nevertheless, work to protect the Blue Lagoon and other infrastructure continues and emphasizes Icelanders resilience when it comes to natural disasters. As we like to say: „Þetta reddast“! (It will be fine!)
If you have any specific geology and volcano-related questions, please leave them in the comments. We will return to the eruption site with a geologist soon, and we can get expert answers to your questions! 🌋

Great and thank you 🙏 for sharing and uppdating.. I was following Grindavik on KZread since the begining of this year. Very fascinated by seeing the Active Volcano. In ther thand feel sympatic to many people who must laave the town.. Then in June some thai freinds of mine visited me then we took a trip to ICELAND (first time of our lives) - but never got any exprience for BLUE LAGOON - Casue of Road was closed. We explored the East Side of Reykjavik and have seen a lot akibg RIADNO. 1 to Vik Town. Stayed some nights nearby.. Wonderful time for us. So next summer, JUNE 2025, we shall explore the North West of ICELAND... Hope that will see more exciting natural places. Best Wishes from STOCKHOLM - SWEDEN 🌲🌲🌲🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼🍃🍃🥀🥀

Thank you for this video. I don’t understand why the Blue Lagoon every time opens again and again as soon as possible and till the last minute. They take a high risk with tourists safety, they worry about money and don’t inform the tourists right. I safety first and then the money. There are so many other thermal pools in Iceland, send them there where it’s safe. Greetings from the Netherlands.

We'll be in Iceland this summer, and we absolutely *refuse* to book at Blue Lagoon right now. Not worth it. We will visit other touristy spots instead. The risk at Blue Lagoon is much too high, and it could become deadly in an instant. Such a ridiculous risk. The callous disregard for safety and the runaway greed that Blue Lagoon has shown has driven us - and plenty of other *ethical* tourists - far, far away. We also think it is grotesque of tourists to demand to wallow around in a dangerous active distaster area while locals are still working overtime to save what they can. Seriously, how *CRUEL* can people be? It's utterly disgusting to try to invade an abandoned town in the middle of an emergency, like a ghoul gloating over the destruction of other people's lives. This isn't some trashy themepark for the kiddies to play in, it's a life-threatening, ongoing DISASTER, and people's HOMES.. Behaviour betrays who people really are.

By that "criteria", ALL Americans "deserve" abuse, simply for living in areas with risks - earthquake prone areas, over the Yellowstone volcanic area, in "Tornado Alley", in drought areas like NM or Texas, or in the flood prone poverty stricken SE, high density areas vulnerable to pandemics, rural areas vulnerable to poverty... There is a clear and present danger. Access and depature roads have been cut off by lava flows and one fissure eruption started just out side the Town with a lava flow flowing in to the Towns northern perimeter housing area where it burnt houses to the ground. A fissure could open at any time right with in the Town center. If such an eruption happened with all the houses occupied and hotels full of tourists then the immediat order designated by sirens wailing would be to evacuate. Such an immediate emergency evacuation would include security, the fire fighters, the Police and all. The hurry would be to get out of the eruption area before roads are cut of. There is going to be no one there to spay water canons on burning property. It may look cool on an internet screen. But a million tons of molten hot lava is anything but cool. A volcano is so hot that even fire fighters or fire engine trucks can not be near. Nor with in a hundred meters or 2 hundred meters or far more as spitting lava can spit much further than just the immediat vent. Therefore the Fire Fighting crews will also evacuate to safety or relative safety. Then there is also five known toxic gases which are heavier than air and so the Town could be engulfed in a deadly toxic gas. No one there handing out gas masks or rushing people to hospitals. If Grindavik went boom. There would not even be a shop left open to sell a person a plaster or burn soothing lotion.
