Over the course of South Park’s history, no character has INCREASED prominence more than Randy Marsh. In fact, I previously did an entire video tracking Randy’s evolution from sparingly used, generic father into heavily relied upon buffoon who is arguably the show’s main character. And when making that video, there was ONE episode in particular that was CLEARLY the turning point for Randy. One episode that shifted Randy from a pretty typical South Park citizen, into a prominent, goofy, overly obsessive oaf. That episode is, of course, The Losing Edge. The Little League baseball episode in which Randy becomes completely obsessed with getting in fights with other dad’s at Stan’s baseball games. So, since we last looked at the episode thcat changed Eric Cartman forever, today, let’s dive in and look at not only what makes The Losing Edge an incredible episode, but exactly how it shifted the way the show utilized Randy forever.

@@timmyman9677He's not really Flanderised. His development has been a lot more like Homer's, where for the first few seasons he's fairly normal while the focus is on the kids, but later he becomes increasingly buffoonish as he becomes a more and more central character. He's not reduced down to a couple of catchphrases the way Flanders is.

There are times Randy becomes a bit insufferable later admitedly. He's like Cartman and Roger Smith, he's better moderated if you give him his just desserts every now and then, him ALWAYS allowed to get away with shit makes him annoying. I also kinda miss 'super hammy and over protective Dad' Randy over the 'stock selfish moron protagonist' Randy sometimes. He's definitely one of Trey Parker's funniest voice roles though, he just goes all out with him.

Two fantastic and 'absurdified', kinda how you put it Johnny, storylines in such a South Park style reflective of many other golden age episodes. My dad was the biggest reason I stopped liking sports early on. He'd get like this at all my little kid baseball games then it bled into soccer etc. As I got older, I'd tell my mom NOT to invite him to my games so I wouldn't be embarrassed. There's a lot of oddball behavior in sports that gets shoved under the rug because of its popularity. Of course, I took to music instead which has been a source of him being disappointed in me. What's even funnier is that he just sat and drank beer so it's not like he did anything athletic with or in front of me either. Yet he acted like me not being an athlete meant I now have nothing life. Still doesn't understand why my mother left him and upgraded.

Another thing to consider with Randy is, think of the 2 guys writing the show. They started about 30 years ago. In their early 20s when they laughed at dumb stuff. Nothing wrong with that, but the 2 lads even said they are embarrassed by the first 3 seasons which makes complete sense. They grew up, they got older , life started happening to them, married, kids all that wonderful stuff. I think another reason randy became more of a central character to the show is because they began to relate more to the adults and see funnier things that adults can get up than, than to stan and kyle

another interesting thing is that the old Randy also shines through in a couple of scenes this episode.. like for example when Randy and Batdaddy were interviewed, Randy gave a solid and grounded response while Batdaddy was the one who gave the overthetop response, which at the time was extra funny because we didn't know Randy yet to be the guy he is today..

Randy becoming the main character is what turned me away from South Park. He was a fun background character in the series, but his rise to prominence turned South Park from an animated sitcom about four boys who get into all kinds of crazy bullshit into another animated sitcom about a suburban dad who acts like a total jackass and selfishly ropes everyone in his surroundings into his shenanigans.

The Losing Edge is funnier than Bloody Mary, but I think the character change you're talking about with the whole dialing Randy's sillyness up to 11 started with Bloody Mary - wtf nvm I thought that was season 8 for some reason. Mandela effect or something...

i think randy has always been this kind of a figure for the show... spontaneous combustion and something you can do with your finger are just two examples of his prominence in the early seasons.
