This is first class historical basketball analysis. Beyond that and what makes it more than statistical abstract is the artistry, the determination, the skill sets, the absolute and unstoppable will to win. It is a sad fact of the 2020s that we have to go back in time to see this kind of not only competition but skills athleticism, strength, heart. Those who believe that in the past 20 years basketball has gotten better we're born 25 years ago. They simply were not exposed to the incredible rivalries and the incredible nature of competition in sports in general but as we speak about basketball anyone who believes that the players today are somehow so gifted and so athletic that they can waltz halfway up the court dribbling up to their chin only to toss up a 40 ft ala Harlem Globetrotter

I know Bird only played 13 seasons, and that length of time is a very short career in comparison with other NBA players, especially today. But I think it really adds to Bird's legend. He never took nights off if he could lace up his sneakers. He never tried to prolong his career by taking nights off or not giving 110% every single game he played. People who never saw Bird play just do not understand the level of dedication and love Bird had for the game. Very few players in today's game give that same effort and dedication.

The commentary about who was the GOAT during this time is ridiculous. Players performances ebbed and flowed, but what is clear in my rearview mirror having been to many of these games at the Garden as a kid in the 80's was just how consistent Bird was, especially in clutch moments. He miraculously delivered, time and time again. Ainge was a better 3 pt shooter, sure, but only Magic could rival Bird in passing/assist prowess. Bird had the best on-court instinct to know what had to be done. As the Celtic's five aged, it was only a matter of time before Jordan's inhuman supremacy took hold, but not before Bird schooled the young hot rod at times in his late career. Great video, revisiting this golden age of rivalry and unrivaled talent. So much fun.

Larry Bird is the only player in NBA history to shoot better than 50-40-90 four straight years while averaging over 28 PPG. Only two other players in NBA history have ever shot better than 50-40-90 in a season even once and none four straight seasons. Had Larry's chronic injured back injury not occurred, there is no telling how many more years he would have kept that streak going. And that's not counting the double digit career rebounding and being the best passing forward in history. Celts go from 29 wins before his rookie year to 61 wins his rookie year and there was no Parish, McKale, DJ, or Ainge on that team, just the same guys who won only 29 plus Larry Bird. Greatest one year win improvement by ANY team in NBA history and it came because of the addition of a rookie. It proved that Bird carrying a bunch of no-name players at Indiana State to a undefeated season, slaying one giant after another during March madness until that 1979 NCAA championship game was no fluke. What he did at sad sack Indiana State has never been repeated and what he did his rookie year at (then) sad sack Boston has never been repeated. There is a reason for that, a very precise reason...BECAUSE NO ONE SINCE HAS BEEN AS GOOD AS BIRD AND THEREFORE COULDN'T DO THOSE THINGS AND DIDN'T DO THOSE THINGS. You will never see another Larry Joe Bird. Hide trimmed content

MY won me over to being an NBA fan. So, the Bulls were my team and naturally Bird was the enemy, thus I hated him. LOL Now I think he's a legend and have complete respect for his game.

The best team of that era was the Detroit Pistons, not Jordan's Bulls, not Bird's Celtics, not Magic's Lakers, not Wilkin's Hawks. Detroit "Bad Boy" Pistons...Pistons being one of the best teams ever to lace up sneakers.

I don’t understand the thumbnail pic for this video - why does Larry look so TINY, when he was 6’9” (or as many of his rivals said, closer to 6’10) ?? He was taller than Pippen’s 6’8”, and *certainly* taller than the 6’6” Jordan.

I miss the old arenas or at least the old arena names. Great Western Form, Boston Garden, Chicago Stadium. Now the new arena names are so lame with no character.
