I've never been a basketball fan - not my game and the egos. But I was a Celtics fan in the 80s. What impressed me most about Larry Bird was, unlike too many other supposed GOATs, he didn't chase records and he was a true team player. To me, the mark of a true GOAT is when they make the others around them look even better that they are. It's hard to imagine what his stats would be if he was chasing records. Respect, Mr. Bird.

So you were never a basketball fan, but you were a Celtics fan in the 80s? If you meant the Boston Celtics, were you aware that they played in the National BASKETBALL Association? Maybe you were just a gambler then, and liked them because they won a lot?...made you wealthy? You would have REALLY liked them in the 60's...look up their record then. They were worthy of my hate in the 60's because Ioved basketball then, and they beat my teams consistently almost every year....great competition though. 80's was great basketball too.

Young basketball fans today really don't understand how great Bird was, and how competitive 1980s and 1990s were for the NBA. Bird won 3 Championships in the most competitive era in the NBA. Dude used to get into fistfight eith the opposing fans in college when he'd dive into the crowd for loose balls and they'd hold and hit him so he had to fight to get back in. But he broke his hand in college after he was drafted in a dumb softball game. He said he never shot as well again. Then you had the busses back, bone Spurs, concussions, busted orbital bone. He was amazing. I don't know how nobody has made the Larry Bird story yet. He learned his toughness from his father.

Nonsense there are many players with STATS due to longevity in the game! Most if not all could not touch Larry Joe Bird as a player. There is alot of bias out there due to Basketball being hailed as a black man's sport. It's not all about athleticism, it helps for sure but ability, vision, ability to see a pass others cannot, clutchness (LeBron has none) ability to make those around you play better, team work all traits a G. O. A. T must have. I would put Larry Birds best season up against any.... 13 years of greatness even in his rookie year he was smashing most. Is that why Jordan is third all-time in assists among pure SG's? Or maybe him not being able to pass is what caused him to drop 10 triple-doubles in an 11 game span when Doug Collins asked MJ to slide over to point back in '89? A position, by the way, that MJ had _never_ played at ANY level up to that point. Jordan played point for a total of 15 games that season and averaged 10.1 assists per game during that stretch which, had he played enough games at point to qualify, would have seen him finish the season in 4th place among the assists leaders. This notion that Jordan couldn't pass really needs to die.

He's still the only player to be in the Top 60 of all 3 all time - and nobody else manages that Top 150 in ALL THREE. Unarguably the best all-around player of NBA history, though others (Hi Wilt! Hi Oscar! Hi Kareem! Hi Hakeem!) managed 2 of the 3 ahead of Larry Legend.

This one`s mine...The day after winning the NBA championship he received a call and his Mom said he`s not here he`s running laps at the gym because he is trying to get into shape for the oncoming season?? Then it finally occurred to me because Im a procrastinator and have a history of always being late. DO YOU THINK AS I DO THAT LARRY BIRD WAS THE FIRST AND POSSIBLY ONLY PERSON i`VE SEEN WHO GENUINLY UNDERSTOOD THE ENITITY OF TIME? EVEN THOUGH IT IS IN THE BACKGROUND IN EVERYDAY LIFE AND IT MOVES OH SO UNASSUMINGLY UNTIL IT SNEAKS UP FROM BEHIND. HE SAID FORGET THE PLAY I`LL SHOOT IT, SAVES TIME, ALWAYS MOVING ALWAYS IN A HURRY NO MATTER WHAT UP THE FLOOR OR DOWN THE FLOOR. I`VE WASTED SO MUCH OF MY LIFE I1S NOT FUNNY, HELL, I THOUGHT TIME WAS MY FRIEND UNTIL LAST SUNDAY. YOUR opinion or mine but I don`t think LARRY BIRD has ever been accused of wasting time.

Very difficult to say who was the greatest of all-time, because players of other era's are either not in the discussion or overlooked because a particular generation doesn't even know anything about them. Bird was definitely one of the greatest. But, what about Chamberlain, Baylor, Russell, West, etc. And remember the rules have changed and "carrying the ball" was strictly enforced years ago. Now, 6'8 guards are common place. Back in Cousy's day, that would have been disastrous.
