It's crazy how mellow and welcoming it looks from the cliffs. Once your in the water only a few feet away from the beast, the entire atmosphere changes. There's a local break near me in San Diego called Black's Beach. It's a world class break and breaks larger than other breaks in the county due to an underwater canyon offshore. From the cliffs, you see these soft, slow rolling peaks that look like ripples on a blanket. In the water, or even from the shore - you see how much bigger, faster, and heavier the waves actually are.

Great analogy with Blacks. Surfed there a lot in the 90s. Will never forget our first time at Blacks.. Grew up surfing Sunset beach, Bolsa Chica, HB Cliffs. This was long before Surfline or any good way to know how big the surf was, you just winged-it. Stood on the cliffs at Black's beach at first light, nobody out, and thought it looked about head high. Paddled out between sets and was absolutely TERRIFIED when the first set rolled through. It was literally double to triple overhead, biggest surf I had been in (at that time).
