Plays between the opponent's defense and midfield lines. This serves several purposes; trick the opponents' lines, create uncertainty, exploit spaces, receive the ball to make plays etc. It's a position very demanding that requires a very skillfull and diverse footballer to execute well. And Messi executed it like art.

It’s effectively what we know as the false 9 since his role was deeper than a conventional striker and that’s exactly what Messi did as the same position.
