I was stationed at Davis Monthan in the 60's and saw many WWII bombers cut up, make one cry.

I have worked on everyone of those T-34C from 1987-2009. Talk about putting the scrap money back into the DOD.....2009 we installed brand new carry through's and wing spars with new paint jobs. Spent quit a bit of money to do that just to send them to the boneyard and get 1% back for scrap. Almost brings me to tears as that is a sweet little airplane.

Nice video. Would have loved to be on this tour :-). First time for me to see engines stores as separate components in pressurized tanks / compartments . It was always on my bucket list... but wrongly I thought it was located in a remote part of the Arizona desert.... so never planned to visit on this short roadtrip from the UK. Only by chance did we drive past a row of wrapped C130s on the way to our hotel in Tucson... when the penny dropped and I realised that the Davis Monthan Air Base was actually within the Tucson City Limits ..... amazing, surreal place !!! cheers Paul

My aunt worked there in the 60's and early 70's in a clerical capacity, I visited her in the late 70's and she took me there where I was able to walk around and look at all the planes. Pretty neat stuff for an 18 year old kid. Chances are I saw some of the same planes featured in your video. Thanks for putting this up.

@Jeff R. I agree on the F-14 part it would be nice to keep them and not destroying them and it is Kc-135 and some B-52,F-,16,C-130,C-5 And B-1 lancer go back into service and they destroy some but they still fly

I used to drive by there every day on my way to work. Always stared.

There is a website that has aerial pictures of the boneyard dating back to the 50s. Scores of B-36 aircraft surrounded by a fence of their own propellers. Later photos show rows of B-58 Hustlers. I think it’s called Historic Aerials.

Damn I wish DM would turn into a gigantic museum, where aircraft come to rest without being destroyed. History would be preserved, and after all, the money they make out of scrap metal is insignificant compared to the historical value of each aircraft!

Not sure of the date of your visit, but I'm sure some of the F-16's I worked on are still there. (IL Air National Guard) I'm also sure that most if not all of our old F-4 D models are already scrapped or blown out of the sky as drone targets. I'm sure it's a very interesting place and I would like to get up close and personal with some of the aircraft types that I'm not at all familiar with. Navy & Coast Guard for sure. thanks again and have a good one. :)

Was always on my bucket list but for some reason I always thought it was in the middle of a distant desert area so didn't even think about visiting on our roadtrip. Imagine my surprise when nearing our hotel in Tucson I noticed, luckily, C47s all wrapped up right by the highway...... Checked the map... and wow ..there it was. Very lucky to get a trip the next morning from Pima Air & Space Museum. regards Paul

My dad was a civilian in the Airforce and had access to the bone yard and had taken me through it numerous times as a kid. Very good childhood memories. I still live in Tucson and I love going past it.

FYI - The HH-60G that was seen flying around is only flown by the Air Force, Air National Guard, and Reserves. More than likely assigned to either the 55th or 305th Rescue Squadrons there are stationed at DM. The "HH" variant of the 60 is designated for search and rescue and helicopter of course. The HH-60G is also known as the Pavehawk, which has different equipment (avionics, defensive systems, weapons and etc) on board compared to other 60s. There are alot of different variants flown by different branches, nations, civilian and police counterparts. The Border Patrol 60's that fly out of DM were old UH-60A models, at least when I was assigned to the 55 Rescue Squadron from 2006-2010. Good info in this video. Miss seeing the bone yard, especially from above.

I also was in the 55th. But they were MH60G's at the time. I was at Hurlbert Field from 91 to 98. Then at Kirtland from 2000 to 2005 as a contractor on HH60. Lots of time away from home with them.

I probably work on most of those KC 136's tanker along with the B 52D's. F 4 's all models while station in Thailand.

I love this video, and one day I’ll come out, and see them in person. I have 1000 acre ranch, and I wish I could fill it with aircraft to educate the people. It’s painful to know that so many amazing aircraft are being scrapped, and not admired! I’m in the middle of Oklahoma, if anybody has any ideas?

I was stationed at DM 88-92. Hasn't changed much. Celebrity row just has a few new planes. They use to have the original Boeing 707 there but moved to Washington. Very cool place to be stationed if you are a aviation nut.

Spent 23 years in the USAF and saw some acft I never knew we had in the inventory. But, I see some of the early friends of the jet age that I worked on. Whee whizz, the other services have oohrah, hoorah, so I’ve adopted the whee whizz , besides Fly, Fight, Win! The tails do tell a story just by their insignias. Damn what a sea of F4’s.

If it eases your pain, those A10s, KC135s, C130s, and F16s are being sacrificed to keep their brethren flying. This is the Aircraft equivalent of going to the "junkyard" to get a part for an older car. It is REALLY EXPENSIVE to produce parts for aircraft that are no longer being produced or are being produced in a different "configuration" (as aircraft are built, they evolve and newer planes may NOT use the same parts as older ones). This base helps THE WORLD with that issue.

Nice video. I made a motorcycle ride from Altus, OK to DMAFB. Stayed at the FamCamp on base with all the snowbirds. On Golf Links Road they have twin turn lanes that are designed to kill motorcyclists. Whoever thought that word be a good idea doesn't ride a motorcycle.

It's called spraylat and it's applied with a sprayer (NS) or brushed on for touch ups. It's removed by hand, just peeled off like dry latex paint.

I forget his name, but there was a big guy that looked like Grizzly Adams that worked there and helped us ship and reassemble our EA-6B

The green H-1 was an HH-1K most likely an ex-HAL-4 or HAL-5 Gunship. These were assigned to two reserve squadrons that not only provided C/SAR and SAR assets to the Navy in time of war but supported the SEAL Teams as well. The history of both HAL-4 and 5 as well as their successors, HCS-4, and HCS-5 as well as HSC-84 and 85 can trace their lineage back to HA(L)-3 Seawolves and HC-7 of Vietnam fame as the gunship units were set up with the help of former Seawolf personal. I was able to help restore a K model gunship at NAWS China Lake in the Late 90s. as I was an Aviation Ordnanceman in HAL-5 and HCS-5 at different times in my career.

@@PaulDonovan It is, iv had a look after watching this. some aircraft of note, we have 60 x Chinooks / 20 x A400 Atlas / 8 x C-17 / 28 x C130J / 220x Typhoons / 17 x F35b / 10 x Reaper Drones. / and the Army has 50 x Apache / 34 x Super Lynx. The Navy has 55 x Merlin / 28 x Lynx.. we also have lots of other small aircraft but only in small numbers. i think i spotted double that amount of aircraft in the first 10 mins of the video let alone by the end of it. amazing to see in all honesty.

Very interesting Ryan...... successive Governments have whittled our defences down to well below what I'm comfortable with. We once had a formidable navy.... now look at how many ships we have... scary !! I regularly go to UK Government vehicle disposal auctions and are shocked at just how much equipment is being sold off... particularly ex-reserve stuff with hardly any use..... surely better to keep storing them, just in-case instead of selling off for a fraction of their original cost. @@PaulDonovan Yeh it really is scary the way the governments are running riot, selling land, assets, everything! all while putting us more and more in debt. they run the defences down to a fraction of what is safe, i guess because they rely solely on the submarines and the obvious payloads which in the grand scheme makes even more scary. lol. i dunno all doom and gloom at the minute in the uk, it drives me insane... anyway iv subscribed, il have a look through your videos i can use them as references for my model making. thanks buddy.

Cockpits would make great simulators. Cut install wires and a dome shaped screen. Hydraulic is extra and not necessary.

After WW2, my dad went back into The Civil Service at Davis Monthan Field Boneyard where he became assistant to the superintendent. In the ‘50’s when we would go to Tucson to visit friends and family, my dad would always take me to see his friends at the boneyard. In those days I was allowed to climb in and out and around the aircraft. He would lift me up into the B-17’s, B-25’s which were my favorite two planes. It’s a shame it’s gone to guided tours. People don’t know how to act in public anymore, and it’s ruined a lot of experiences for those who really care.

Hi.... you are welcome ! Tucson was great... we stayed in a nice , friendly hotel near downtown.... We were short on time ... just passing through really. I always thought the boneyard was way out in the desert somewhere so didn't research it before this roadtrip. Like you it had been on my bucket list for many years. It was only by luck that I noticed a load of C47s all wrapped up next to the highway... and said to my wife...." we need to turn round and photograph those" ... then the penny dropped ... it was the BONEYARD !! Managed to get on a coach tour the next morning... it was first come first served so we got there early. Trip departs from the Pima Air and space museum. I understand that you now have to book up at least a couple of weeks before.. online.. to do the tour. Regards Paul

alot of these planes are from the 60s to 90s when the airforce/navy downsized after the end of the coldwar.. we rarely send airplanes to the boneyard anymore. most have been sitting there for 30 years already

at 25.05 till 25:16 or so is the jstar aircraft . thats the test bird that went into storage the year this video was taken...it literally just arrived there a few months prior.. i had the pleasure of working them as they continue to still fly operational

That would be amazing..... the look on their faces.. ! My father was born in 1902... a almost a year before their first flight. My dad died in 1993.... what I life he had.... the growth of aviation... two world wars... etc etc... and hardly ever complained about anything.

The tour starts from the PIMA Air & Space Museum adjacent to the Boneyard. When we went you could not pre-book. You had to turn up at the museum ... first come first served. We took the first tour .... around 8.30am... got there very early 7.30ish... to be sure... although there was room for everyone. I understand you now have to pre-book on-line. Regards Paul

Fantastic. While I lived with my family on the base in the early 1960s (and attended 1st and 2nd grades at Lowell Smith elementary), I never got the tour you're giving. I grew up in Tucson across Golf Links. I recall that when we first moved off the base, there was a rather decrepit barbed wire fence around the north side where some aircraft were placed as a small museum. Lol! I love seeing the mountains! Good views of all 4 ranges. God, I love airplanes! Thanks!!

@@PaulDonovan I worked at a leading university and we had an ONR contract to do research on the hydraulic problems they were having on their A-6 platforms when carrier landing. So we spent months hooking up computer control to all of the valves and electrical systems, adding flow and pressure sensors. We had her jacked up on the tripods and a mule to run pressure... so we then could actuate flaps, slats, landing gear, etc. in a sequence of landing. Like having a life sized RC airplane to play with!

When we received the plane (EA-6B) it came on 2 flatbeds... we had to assemble it inside our big truck bay... We decided to put the wings on (via 2 fork lifts) folded up... WRONG! we couldn't do our tests in that position, so off they came and back on in the down position! I remember very well the 122 bolts in each wing root!

@@PaulDonovan Another associate of mine was sent out the the airbase to build a full scale model of our garage bay door (approx. 12X12) to see if the fuselage without the wings on could actually be brought into our truck bay. They did have to cut one of the "points" off the root edge on one side with a K-12 saw so it could be waggled through the door!

The aircraft I crewed is there and now in pieces. That is a sad feeling.

Very nice. Thank you. I was last there in 1971 and somewhere I have photos of the many C-121 Connies and C-119 Globemasters there at the time. A couple corrections to comments your guide made: NAS Fallon is in Nevada, not California. CH-53's were never part of the Marine Corps Executive (Marine One) Squadron. Maybe he was confusing it with the VH-3's that served in the role for years. By definition though, ANY Marine Corps aircraft with the President aboard would be designated Marine One be it a 53, CH-46, A-4, A-6, F-18, anything, even those aircraft aren't part of the regular executive transport fleet. C-119 was the "Flying Boxcar", and HMX-1 did in fact operate CH-53s for a number of years because I saw them at Quantico.

You mentioned F-101, on my 9th Birthday June 1964 my dad brought me to work with him at Niagara Falls AirForce Base and I was bouncing on a trampoline at the wearhouse at base Shipping and Receiving till my dad said I’m having to much fun and I’m to go run around outside but don’t get run over by a Fighter Jet!!! So I went to the base gym and I was working out on the gym equipment and a man walked in and asked if I was an AirForce Brat and I told him No my dad works Civil Service in shipping and receiving. He asked my dads name and I told him Walt Orzolick. He said he knew my dad and asked me if I wanted to go for a ride with him, I was kind of thrown and asked him where are you going to take me. He said he was the pilot 👨‍✈️ to an F-101 Voodoo Fighter Jet and he had to go on a mission and was going to take me for a ride in his Fighter Jet. I said Yeah Sure. Next thing I know his ground crew found the smallest flight suit for me and was helping me in it and rolling up the legs and sleeves for me and helped me climb into the Navigator Seat 💺 and strapped me in putting the flight helmet on with the oxygen mask and we taxied off into the air above NiagaraFalls it’s self and he did a barrel roll where I passed out and he was ordered to return to base Was the best Birthday Gift I ever had. My dad worked at that base from 1955-1970 and he also built the shed for the Fighter Jets to Strafe and blow up during the Air Shows every Summer, and in 1970 he (dad) had to go to Aberdeen Proving Grounds to learn how to pack and ship out all the Nuclear War Heads for the ICBM’s in Niagara County and Erie County back in those days

I was about eight years old, living on a farm in British Columbia, Canada. They had F-101 Voodoo jets at Comox AFB, on Vancouver Island. They were flying over our farm practicing for an air show when there was a mid-air collision. My brother, sister, and I were riding behind our farm tractor, on a wagon with a load of fence rails, when we heard the bang. Looking up I saw four jets going in different directions with two of them coming down in flames. I thought it was the beginning of a war. As I watched I saw two parchutes open and drift down through the smoke of the crash. Both of the jets crashed about a mile from our place, one in a farmer's field, and the other in the woods near the beach. There was much concern because part of a wing, still in flames, came to rest against the side of a shed where the farmer kept the feul for his farm machinery. Both pilots were able to eject, but both co-pilots were killed in the crash. I watched my mom perform first aid on one of the pilots, who had a broken arm.

during that one portion of the video when it showed all those engines sitting in the background, in a way those looked like the ones Anakin Skywalker used on his pod Racer......lol...

All the flyable F-4s were converted to target drones. They are now converting F-16s to also be target drones. All they have to do is make one last flight, and fall in the ocean, after being shot down, usually by a missle.

Sorry to tell you BUT on the F8 crusader when the wing was raised you would see that there is a flat spot where the wings come together , and it was used as a speed brake to help slow down the aircraft. Also you said that "G " was your body's weight., also wrong. The G is called G force which has to do with gravity and it's force on the body. I worked on the F8 in the Marine Corps ( 1963-1967) and i worked on the ejection seats, which were made by Martin Baker. Semper Fi

All those billions of dollars being turned to scrap seems kinda sad n wasteful but I accept that folks in the know have made the decision for a good reason. A very impressive sight seeing them all lined up like that and such a wide variety of types n ages, wish I could see them in person. I remember how sad folks were when New Zealand scraped the Sky Hawks back in the late 90s I think, I hadn't realized they were Vietnam era planes. We only had a few, maybe 6 planes I think, but when they were sold we lost any offensive air power and our air force pilots any opportunity to fly jet fighters. Sad.

Too bad they didn't start this at the end of WWII. Just think of rows of B-29s, B-17s, B36s, B 47, Mustangs, etc, etc. What a shame!

it was was established in 1946 as the 4105th Army Air Force Base Unit to house Boeing B-29 Superfortress and Douglas C-47 Skytrain aircraft... plus others !!! regards Paul

At the end of world war 2 in Europe. The US government ordered to destroy most remain aircrafts as it was more economical to do so instead of flying or bringing them back home. Had a book that showed rows of P51, mustangs canopies stacked in rows while the fuselage were axed and burned. The P47 Thunderbolts were likewise destroyed the same way. Pilots and mechanics had a grand time flying and destroying what was left of the luftwaffe including bf 109, me 262, first turbine powered jet.

@@junkerju58 So true. I'm an RCAF veteran and amateur historian. I wish I was around at the end of WWII with a little cash in my pocket because Canada was selling surplus aircraft for pennies on the dollar. Here's some actual initial prices: Fairey Battle, Bristol Bolingbroke (Blenheim), Cessna Crane, Westland Lysanders: $15 each. Unsold Fairey Battles were later sold for $1.00 apiece! P51D's were selling for $500 each in the Fifties. Those were the lucky aircraft. Unbelievably, all of Canada's B24's were burned, their remains crushed and then buried. Canada's B25's fared slightly better and were cannibalized for whatever parts were usable. Canada's BCATP (British Commonwealth Air Training Plan) had remote bases all across Canada and surplus aircraft presented a liability as bases were being shut down so local farmers were usually the recipient of the Crown assets disposal largess. For decades after the war, surplus aircraft lay rotting in farmers' fields after they were purchased for their tires and the gasoline in their tanks. A few survived to fly again: a Hawker Hurricane was found languishing in a field in 1965 and was restored to flight capability. It later appeared in the movie "The Battle of Britain" and last I heard resides at the Canadian Warplane Heritage museum although I have heard a rumor that it was destroyed in a recent fire unfortunately.

At the boneyard they allow you to touch the airplanes, climb on them, stick your head inside if any have their windows open. You can't touch them if you are riding on a tour bus that isn't stopping. I would walk. I'd much prefer to go by myself, or with friends, than go with tourists on a tour bus. The owners should rent golf carts. I would be willing to pay extra to rent a golf cart for the day, to drive around the place. When I saw an interesting plane, I could stop and look at it, touch it, maybe stick my head inside.

I'm pretty sure the only way to see the boneyard is on the tour bus !! no option to get up close and personal. Regards Paul

There were only 5 left back in the 1980s when I was stationed at Edwards AFB. Three were in museums, one was on the photo/test range at Edwards AFB, California, and the last I don't remember.
