Nuts and Bolts of The Boneyard
The 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group (309th AMARG) is a one-of-a-kind specialized facility located on Davis-Monthan AFB. More than 4,400 aircraft from the Air Force, Navy-Marine Corps, Army, Coast Guard, federal agencies and foreign allies reside at the "Boneyard." Some aircraft are just taking a brief respite, others stay for an extended furlough. Many supply parts to keep their brethren flying and will never leave intact, and a few are here for only a few days to be updated.

I just visited Tucson for the first time. Flying home I saw all the planes stacked up and was curious. Had never heard of The Boneyard. Thank you for this video.
So many great memories here. My mom was the chief of AMARG/DRMO for many years.
Great video. Very intetesting. And I'm still waiting to visit to tick it off my bucket list. One day.I will.

go, it's a great trip.
I was stationed at DMAFB back in the late 80s and early 90s. Had the good fortune to be able to explore the many intriguing aircraft in AMARC/boneyard. It was almost too much fun.
Fascinating. Thanks for sharing 👍
I grew up literally across the street from where the B-52s were parked in the early 70’s. They were always being moved around.
Spent some good time there for aircraft battle damage repair which entails making a damaged aircraft serviceable to make it back to it's base during wartime operations. Very cool duty and Tuscon is a nice city.
I'm a bit of a nerd but what a fascinating place. I could spend years checking out all the cool tech there.
Fascinating to see all this classic hardware.
Great video Thank you for Sharing Australia
This is a fascinating program!
Nice vid 👌. 2 C-130Hs will be coming home to the Phil Air Force this year. They both come from Davis Monthan 😊.
My little brother Chris Marcotte used to work there I once went there with him pretty amazing
we have seen this place. An A-10 pilot was our tour guide.
Great video 👍
wow this will be my bucket list - from malaysia-
well done!
Love to work there !!
Very nice video. I guess we'd all like to work in such a place.
Are the 30mm rounds sold separately?
Wow!!!!! Just wow!!!
I think at the very least 1 of every type should be restored and preserved for display and posterity.

Agreed. Our airforce base here has a museum just outside the base gates that anyone can go to for free. It has about 20 retired aircraft from WW2 up as well as a 5000sqft inside military history display. It's pretty cool and I think more people should get to see this stuff.
Love to have a few in my yard
Somewhere in there are all of the RAF's last Harrier GR7 / GR9 aircraft in crates...
Cool.. you can give me one of those A-10's ;-)

Me Too! I am old and worn out from my Service in Military Aviation. I think of those that built them, maintained and flew them. As well as where they have been. Youth is only for the young.
Watched this because if the title and is was brief time wise. Good vid and at least some of those planes keep other flying and some get returned to active service. What other country can do this even on a limited basis? None! Like to see a more in depth vid like refurbishing an A10 etc. Anyway well done for a brief peek!
I THINK I SAW R2D2 AND C3PO!

US service often buy more aircraft than Congress will fund operations for, so the services put new aircraft into cacoons and then exchange them with aircraft as they reach a specific flight hour limit. The B-1B is a typical example.

i mean most aircraft dont really age with normal upkeep. those are clearly old as fuck
@Jasonhb07
4 жыл бұрын
@@dracik5257 To correct you, aircraft do age regardless of normal or excellent upkeep. US military aircraft have strict airframe hour limits. For example, the B-52's airframe life is maxed at 37,500 hours. Metal and composite fatigue cannot be corrected with routine maintenance.

How much is c130 as aretired plane?
Our C-130H's will probably end up here, once the new C-130J-30 Super turn up. 1 C-130 & 2 P-3K2 will stay in New Zealand. You guys have got our TA/A-4K Skyhawks and Italian built MB-339CK Aermacchi's, still a swore point in NZ
"B1B jack screw assembly? Sure. How many do you need?"

I want to work there...
I want a job there, only problem is that I am 74 years old, but having a job there would postpone my retirement.
All the aircraft that I flew in are either beer cans or in some museum 😎
I would hate to see these fabulous planes as target drones. Just makes me sad.
@unfortunately_fortunate2000
5 жыл бұрын
why? fabulous as they are, a lot of them are becoming quite dated, especially as the f-35 program makes more and more strides, the pilots custom helmet for the f-35 is more advanced than even some the fighters in the bone yard. they're not useless, if they can function as an unmanned drone and be used to save an support the lives of the infantry, all the better!!

At Tyndall AFB Florida the flightline has birds with orange tails. That is Death Row. It has to happen to test the efficacy of our weapons. As a Veteran that had worked in the industry as well, I think of all the people that built, maintained and flew them.

Planes should give out organ donor cards. Planes dontaing parts to keep other ones alive.
Can have a Marine Corp ch 46
Leasing a buzzed out Bentley isn’t that difficult. Buying an A-10 straight cash and giving that piece a custom paint job isn’t easy at all.

If I could I would take the C130 and used them for freighter transport and put freight on these planes and fly them from Santa Monica to Hawaii back and forth, just like dedicated truck drivers does for C.R. England, that would be a great opportunity for the pilot to fly these planes hauling freights.
What’s the point of being in the Air Force if it is all in unmanned, I mean almost all of the people who join literally want to fly not sit in a chair and control an aircraft through a computer and if you take away the pilots ability to fly than what’s the point.

This is not a junk yard. Aircraft are stored here when Congress doesn't provide sufficient funds to operate the fleet and then swapped as those in service reach targeted flight hours. Other aircraft are in war reserve, maintained at a point where a simple overhaul can return them to service to replace losses or expand the force. Some are there awaiting Foreign Military Sales or transfer to allied air services.

B52s still have a purpose and role and they are updated with engines and so on. Still a great workhorse and delivery vehicle so you can't necessarily egpquate or reason why based on age, comes down to cost and the role they still play and if they are viable militarily.

The USAF initially bought more B-1Bs than Congress will provide operational funding for so some are put into storage and swapped out when the planes in service reach certain flight hour limits.

BONEs are a maintenance headache. Lack of spare parts and the years of abuse have taken a toll on them. They retired alot of the problem children and put them in storage to be parted out. They want to retire them all by 2030 along with the B-2s.
