The Daughters of Princess Alice of The United Kingdom

Princess Alice of the United Kingdom was born on April 25th 1843 as the second daughter of Queen Elizabeth and her husband Prince Albert. In the 1860’s when Alice came of age of marriage her elder sister, who recently wed the heir to the German Empire was requested to make a list with suitable husbands for Alice. Queen Victoria wanted her daughters to marry for love but this did not mean that Alice could have married anyone; she still was required to marry someone within the European Royal Family. The list only contained two possible suitors for Alice which both were soon after discontinued. Soon another possible candidate appeared: Prince Louis of Hesse, the nephew of the Grand Duke of Hesse. Alice and Louis got along immediately and the Queen soon gave her consent for them to marry. The marriage took place in 1862 despite the recent death of Alice’s father. The marriage of Alice and Louise resulted in 7 children - 5 of them were daughters. Their five daughters: Victoria, Elisabeth, Irene, Alix and Marie are the topic of today's video.

I never kept up with the lives of many of the royal children, but there's something that gravitates me toward Alice compared to the rest of Queen Victoria's children. It was tragic how she passed so young, but her legacy lives on through her great-great, 3x great, and 4x great grandsons and other great grandchildren in the line of succession

Firmly agree, there is just something so incredibly intriguing and fascinating about Alice as a historical figure, she is my favourite daughter of Queen Victoria and one of my favourite royals (along with Elizabeth of Austria) What makes her so fascinating is her incredible kindness and her dedication to improving the lives of others, here in germany her legacy is so big that a hospital was named after her in Darmstadt. And yet her story is also extremely sad because her life was filled with tragedy, despite being so caring and warm. Her brother Bertie or King Edward VII also said that she was his favourite sister because of her good nature

Queen Victoria had sound reasons for not wanting her granddaughter, Princess Alix, to marry the Russian heir, Tsarevich Nicholas. How their own lives, the lives of their children (and the history of the world) would have changed if Princess Alix had married another.

She was so beautiful, her daughters (except for Princess May who died in the diptheria epidemic who claimed Alice's life as well) Her 4 daughters were so beautiful as well that amongst the European Royal Houses they were referred to as "The Four Graces"

Source for the singing in the pit thing? Everything I have ever read says the family was shot in a basement, and those who didn't die right away (jewels in women's corsets) were beaten to death with rifle butts or stabbed with bayonets, and only after bloating and decomposing for several days in hot July weather were they dumped in the pit and had acid poured on them.

That was the tsar and his immediate family. Other parts of the Romanovs were taken out at different times. I believe the tsars brother was first killed with a bomb in the streets. His wife dashed to the scene and tried picking up the pieces left of him, kinda like Jackie Kennedy in Dallas. The lady in the pit was very religious and became more so after losing her husband.

There was no singing from the mine shaft that the Romanovs including Elizabeth Feodorovna were thrown into. That is complete myth. Rasputin also never stopped the bleeding of the Tsarevich Alexis. This was proven beyond a doubt when in 1912 the Tsarevich had his worst ever attack of haemophilia in Spala in Poland. Rasputin was far away in his home town in Siberia. It is best not to repeat nonsense.

I just made a similar comment! Everything I've ever read says that when they were thrown in the pit they had been dead for so long that the July heat had caused bloating and the start of decomposition. The assassins hated them so much that anyone they shot who didn't die right away (like the women with jewels in the corsets), they beat to death with rifle butts or stabbed to death with bayonets. So unless the idea is that the singing came from a ghost...well, either way it doesn't make any sense.

@michaelflick1177: Flickflack, where did you get the documentation to support your claims? There is evidence that there was singing from the victims in the mineshaft per a peasant who observed the killing and crept close to the mineshaft. In addition, one of the victims had his head bandaged with Ella’s handkerchief. At the time of Alexei’s Spala attack in 1911, Rasputin was recovering from an attack that nearly killed him. When Alexandra reached out Rasputin for prayers, he responded that the would survive and two days after receiving the telegram, the bleeding stopped when a clot formed. All of this is supported by fact. Where is your proof??

Ella could have been a kaiserin but eventhough she could have been German empress nor Russian side still, both empires fell. And If Alix became an english Queen through the efforts of queen Victoria, maybe the british empire had fallen also. Sadfate for these Hessian sisters.

Had she become Queen consort it would not have signaled the fall of the British Empire. The lady who did become concert was Mary of Teck.Llike Alex, she was also a princess with a German title & Brittish roots. The instability in Russia goes back a few generations. Queen Victoria knew this. She thought a Constitutional Monarch( like England) was safer & more survivable. She was right.
