The Darwin dilemma: he was so close, now he seems so far…

Спорт

Darwin Núñez has become a cult figure at Liverpool, but recent events have thrown his Liverpool future into question. Darwin Nunez could be on his way out of Liverpool.
He showed some frustration following their win over Spurs, and has had limited minutes of late as he has struggled to find the goal. All photos of him in Liverpool kits have been deleted from his instagram. But, has he really been that bad at Liverpool? Let’s look at his performances over his two seasons at Liverpool, and draw parallels to Darwin’s time at Benfica

As a Liverpool fan I can say that most of us have been supportive and a small group of fans have taken it too far with hate/abuse, however I do think people have the right to expect more. Salah with his worst Liverpool season being out for 2.5 months is on 28G/A in the prem. Salah and Jota are our only goal threats really. Diaz and Nunez was meant to replace Mané and Firmino and ad more goals to the attack but that hasn't happened. Nunez I've noticed just shots instead of actually placing the shots it's like the technique isn't all the way there. Like his misses against Luton and Man U just to mention some were so hard to take.

However I do think some so called fans need to behave it is simply not ok to send hate or abuse to anyone.

He gets into such good positions, is a constant threat, a nuisance. His work rate is unbelievable. If he can just time his runs a bit better and compose himself, he’s adding ten-fifteen goals a season to his tally. He can be frustrating, especially in big games where the margins are so fine. I recently said when we were still in for the title and were top of the league, if him and Salah kept missing those big chances, it was going to come and haunt us. Then it did. More so with Darwin because some of his misses have been sitters. I still love him though because he works hard and is entertaining. I can only see improvement. He just has to put the negativity out of his mind and knuckle down. YNWA.

@@lhoman8426 I agree to a certain extent. That pettiness and impetuousness has to go - that’s one of the traits that’s probably stopping him reaching his potential. But I think there’s a world class striker in there. I also don’t think Klopp has invested in him as much as he would have done had Klopp been staying. We’ve seen recently where Klopp has been arriving late to press conferences - sort of in that “don’t care anymore” phase because he’s leaving. If Klopp it that tardy outwardly, imagine what he’s like internally. Klopp might be thinking “not really my problem anymore, someone else can sort it”. Might also explain his recent fallout with Salah. Klopp just isn’t invested enough any more, says things to players he otherwise might not have said. The players pick up on that and it unsettles them.

I feel like this is it for Nuñez, the vast majority of Liverpool fans have backed him to the core throughout these past 2 seasons despite his misses and him constantly being offside. I backed him after his first season, because I agree he does a lot of things well, but I think it's gotten to the point where people are almost underplaying just how bad his finishing is. And you saw him vividly for Benfica so I'm sure there's nothing i can add coz my experience was seeing him in Spain but that was when he was absolutely raw before heading to Benfica. He's still very raw but there's something in there that can be channeled by a prooer coach to calm him down. Although they are very different players (in terms of position and style of play) it reminds me of a young Vini before Carlo when he used to be so rushed anytime he got through on goal, and only until Carlo did we see him calm down and become more calculated and i remember Carlo specifically mentioning that he told Vini to start taking less touches when closer to goal and calming down in the box. But yeah i think he'll be an important piece for Liverpool in their rebuild post Klopp if they stick by him and find a coach whos able to channel that confident side of him.

I’m a Liverpool fan and I’m aboard on the Darwin train. Perhaps I have more patience than other reds but I notice that as stated on the video, Núñez has improved on the tactical side yet is still a chaos merchant. When he’s confident, he generally improves the whole attack. On the psychology aspect and his emotional intelligence side to his game, he’s passionate, seems to be a hard worker and is a team player - trying to get goals but also creating space for others. There are a lot of kinks to work out (which might never be straightened out) but the sticking point for most of the criticism has to be the purported transfer fee. Hope the best for him and my club whether it be together or him going to another club.

As a Liverpool supporter, I’d like for the club to keep him. Here’s why: 1. Composure is a key problem of how Liverpool play. The high intensity means sometimes things happen at 250km/h. For instance, the 2022 UCL final should have been won but no goal was scored despite peppering Courtois’ goal. The keeper had a blinder of a game, but there are often times where LFC players could take an extra touch and didn’t. The proverbial “La pausa”. 2. He fashions chances with his chaos and keeps defenders busy. The space this creates is positive IF teammates can exploit it as well. I’d always prefer he starts vs City and Arsenal, for example. I’d readily sell Diaz first (13G 5A all comps) before Nunez (18G 13A).

Thing is Liverpool in 1st half was really good. They conceded less goals and created lot of chances and burried them. In 2md half Liverpool lost many of their starting stars because of injury and defensive wise Liverpool have been bad in 2nd half. Rhey have barely kept any coean sheets. It also doesn't help when you concede every match. You can't do comeback every match. Also players like Gakpo & Diaz have hardly scored goals or even created chances. All pressure ends up falling on Darwin. Ofcourse he should score some of thise chances but there are times when Duaz and Gakpo in that position and hardly scored those goals. Jota & Mo getting injured doesn't help that. The reason Liverpool fell off in 2nd half is because of injuries and fatigue. When injured players returned they barely had any momentum. Players who were playing got down with fatigue. Klopp going news also doesn't help much. With all the injury issues Liverpool hardly have a structure which provides good chance to the attack. Conceding also doesn't help. Some criticism is fair enough. But some are just too much. It was a collective failure and not just Darwin's finishing when he has scored some goal winning matches.

I understand why people see him as a flop (which he isnt) because there was high expectations and he himself has shown incredible promise , am not saying his close to someone like Suarez as a complete striker but he is sort of in that Benzema category of "mediocre but relativly good on his own with potential for a good season but high output if paired with good wingers". He has individually underperform but i personally look more at Liverpools overall attack always lacking the 3rd player rather than being focused on just Nunez's technical errors cause until now in almost every match 1/3 of Liverpool's attack seems to lack behind wether its Nunez, Salah, Diaz , Gakpo.

A Klopp pick, whose form unsurprisingly dipped shortly after Klopp announced his departure. In the current season, he has scored 23 goals and provided 16 assists, leading to a total involvement in 39 goals across 58 matches. These are stats that any forward would desire, but constant negative press has focused on his missed goal opportunities, which were often created by his own playmaking and constant movement off the ball. Darwin Nuñez's case, with 39 direct goal involvements in 58 matches, is one of the most unjust and incomprehensible in football. Hopefully, he moves to a team or league that appreciates his talent.

I think the true issue here is that of the attacking 3 only Salah is a true finisher. As much as I love Lucho, his lack of goals is the one glaring problem in the pitch, but it's "okay" because he's just a winger, not a striker. If Darwin had clinical finishers at his left and right the whole attacking trident could play more interchangeably and be a real menace but sadly it's not the case and since Mo's injury we're left with a very inconsistent attack.

I guess we expected him to give his all, since we have supported him all through thick and thin, even being ridiculed by rival fans for still propping him up. But lately you can feel that his heart is not there anymore for whatever reason, so we just stopped doing the chant. Also doesnt help that we are being let down by the whole squad with our recent form, Klopp deserves much more than this. We give Salah the same shit, with the shithousery he pulled on the boss in the West ham game. We will defenitely chant Darwin again if he shows fire and get off his arse and keeps trying. It left Klopp with no choice but to start him in games. He was doing okay but I feel his impact was always better when he came off the bench. Due to all this chaos around him unfortunately he crumbled and couldn't keep him calm while scoring. A bit harsh on him but it's very unfortunate. He was called on this big stage to perform when clearly wasn't ready, everybody knew it including Klopp but we know no one had a choice. It's also true he has been given a lot of time to settle and by this time he should have given the quality of our team. It is what it is I guess

I mean 11 goals 8 assist. I know he's underperformed consider his price, and also he misses a lot of chance. But says if liverpool sell him for 65 millions , can we really find his replacement for that amount of money that will be better than 20 goal contribution. Not to mention he's a handful for defender. If we find striker from other league then there's no guarantee he'll adapt well. If we looking in the league right now there're probably a couple striker that is remotely possible solanke, watkins, tony. I don't think watkin will move for anything less than 80-100m villa don't want to sell him, solanke might cost less but 18 goals 3 assist doesn't really an improvement from nunez, toney sound good but last season that's his best season he score 20 and 4 assists good number but not really a for sure improvement . All 3 are older than nunez, he's only 24 there's still time to develop. I love his passion I love his work rate his inconsistency can be improve it's already improve quite a lot from last year. If you go and look at how he control the ball last season compare to this season in the same type of situation (liverpool channel got a clip of his counter attack comparing 2 season) his control of the ball is better and also his pass. People try to compare him with Mane or Firmino but Mane is one of the best forward in premier league in his prime, Firmino is a whole different kind of player and also the best in his role for a couple of year We spoiled by a great frontline for so long that we set this stupid standard for the player. Mancity's Julian Alvarez is the same age as him, got pretty much a same stat for goal contribution, play pretty much the same amount of game yet nobody seem to point finger at him. His performance got magnify by the media because he missed chances, that's not good but it's over criticized. As a Liverpool fan we love having him at the club but if he thinks moving out is better for his career and probably his mental state then we wish them all the best. Just sad that we'll lose an amazing player that in my opinion been a victim of the media.

I understand how statistics can be a quick and easy way to assess a player as it’s empirical evidence. We’re always taught the value of data and how it can help us draw conclusions… but what happened to watching football with our eyes? What happened to appreciating the quality a player brought because they were entertaining? I feel like there is this theme of numbers in football now (primarily England) where a player’s quality is not in their entertainment value, work ethic, or overall play, but instead goals and assists. It seems like every player in the premier league is a flop this season, but then they score a goal and suddenly they’re having a “break out” season. Then, they have a “stinker” and go back to being a flop. It feels like the narrative in football changes each week and people want to just get instant results to banter other clubs. My club loses this week? Sack the manager! My club wins the next week, we’re the greatest club and we never doubted it now let’s talk crap about this other club! Every player, every coach, every club doesn’t need to be measured! I kind of feel like this may go back to Ronaldo and Messi, as they were so close that we had to compare the smallest little detail in their stats and now as both of their careers come to an end we are grasping at straws to recreate the utter joy both players brought us. I don’t know, this is just how I feel about football nowadays. It doesn’t excite me as much anymore. Anyways, this was just a thought that turned into a tangent, thanks for reading! The only question is will Darwin do it for Liverpool or against Liverpool. Choose wisely.

I think Darwin has more goals in his second season than Suarez had score in his second
