I miss that dynamic range with nick shows.
Honestly I think it’s a tradition for holiday stories to be kind of dark and heavy. You can thank Dickens for that.
I can't imagine anything more heartbreaking to a child than having his pet dog put to sleep on Christmas.
Mr Bluff's comment about "Dogs don't have any money they don't even know what money is. " just made me stop and go "...Whaaaaaaaat???? No one can be that stupid. " I still can't comprehend or have any words as to how stupid that is. I repeated it to my dad to see if he could make sense of it No one can honestly
And it won't be the last sad dog episode Billy West performs in

Well at least this one had happy ending
I agree that this is the darkest episode of Doug because of the thought of his dog was going to be euthanized at Christmas! What really disturbed me the most was that when Doug was trying to set up a petition to save Porkchop, everyone was too wrapped up in themselves to even care about Porkchop's fate! I would've thought that since it was the holiday season, people would be more compassionate about it! I've lost all faith in humanity!
Doug's Christmas Story would have to be the darkest Christmas special in the history of Christmas Christmas specials.

I watched Doug when I was a kid. Rewatching as an adult this show gives me anxiety with most episodes. There are definitely more than 1 dark episode.
I admire when Jambareeqi talks about underrated Nickelodeon and Disney cartoons, there’s so many good and unique things to talk about from them.
That rich guy made me extremely angry as a kid. He wanted to kill a dog. Still gets me upset today.

When you have a child, and you find out that they were bitten by a dog you would want that dog put down too regardless of the circumstances.
I remember seeing a rerun of this episode during the Christmas season in the early 2000’s. It’s stuck with me all these years later, whenever I hear the phrase “bad dog” I think of this episode.

Doug was PISSED. Even sent Porkchop to his igloo like a parent punishing their kid.
Dogs rule. 1. Man's Best Friend. 2. Family Member. 3. They always got your back.
That episode is definitely dark, especially for a Christmas episode. Other episodes that were dark for Doug are "Doug's Nightmare on Jumbo Street" and on the Disney side, "Doug's Movie Madness". "Doug's Movie Madness" also had his parents be hypocritical about Doug seeing a violent action movie, Targetman, and even grounds him for it after he gets a nightmare from it, and that nightmare was pretty dark and disturbing. It's hypocritical because his parents didn't say anything about him seeing the Abnormal on "Doug's Nightmare on Jumbo Street" (which he seen 3 times ) yet they forbid him for wanting to see Targetman. Yeah they mentioned how he got scared from a scary movie but they never forbid him from seeing it.
The only thing that will make the ending of this episode more satisfying is that the judge sentences everyone who had wrongfully accused Porkchop community service all winter long by having to shovel snow off streets. (Yes, the same kind if street that cars travel on, and normally cleared out by a snowplow). Not only that, they have to give premium dog treats to all the dogs, including Porkchop, while Mr. Bluff gets restrained in stocks and gets pelted by wet snowballs.
To be honest I was kind of hoping he would talk about the other dark episode of Doug about the monster movie in the theater episode. Demonstrating your imagination is a lot scarier than what is presented to you

Ah yes, "Nightmare On Jumbo Street." The part that scared me as a kid was when Doug ran home but nobody was home when he called for them. What really hit home was when Porkchop, whom Doug instructed earlier to make sure to not look away, forced Doug's eye open for the monster reveal. That's man's best friend who can keep his word!
I agree this WAS the darkest. AT LEAST of Nickelodeon Doug. It's also one of my favorites. Always did like how Doug solved this one as himself....it spoke to how serious this situation was.
Doug’s Chubby Buddy, the episode stars about Patti suffer through an eating disorder and feeling insecure about gaining weight. Or Patti’s Dad Dilemma, which is about Patti founding out that her dad is dating her teacher and while she still remember her old mom before they both got into a car accident. I know they’re not “dark” but they are very deep. Especially during its Disney era.

To me the darkest doug episode would still have to be doug math proplem when Doug fail at his maths lesson and when a letter from his schools comes he starts to freak out worrying how his parents would react to it. To me was the darkest and relatable episode as it showed how most people like myself deal with Math stress but also knowing when a letter or phone call comes from a school or college worrying how your parents would react when they learn any problems that could happen or if any problems are made worse

Here’s how I would’ve written this episode: Porkchop saves Beebe from the thin ice and everybody notices the rescue and makes a run for it. When everyone is off the ice, Beebe excitedly thanks Porkchop for saving her life and has her father reward him with a parade, countless presents and parties. While Porkchop is grateful for all this, he isn’t satisfied because he knows there’s more to Christmas than materialism. He takes Beebe to the dog pound where poor little dogs are in need of a home. Beebe starts to realize that there are other dogs just as important as house dogs. Mr. Bluff could learn this lesson as well. So the three of them set out to find new homes for all the dogs, while the episode still contains Christmas elements like carols and decorations.

"I don't like dogs. They don't have any money!"
Reminds me of an episode of Lassie where one boy claimed lassie bit him, at the end the judge tosses the gavel at lassie who catches it in her mouth and the judge compares her bite to the one on the boys leg, it was bigger on the leg, turned out the boy was trespassing when he came across barbed wire and didnt want to get in trouble, but through the episode alot of people turned on lassie
that is terrible, I was a nerd for doug, but gladly i never watched THIS episode, as a kid it would have made me so sad, even with the happy ending it would be crazy
The episode had everything to few slight changes to being a sad story, because in reality Porkchop would've been put to sleep most likely without a trial.
The dog pound looks like a German "camp" from the 1940s
6:04 I LOVE how you mentioned Don Bluth.
Mr Bluff and the Ex Mayor are just down right Slimey. They definitely deserve all the hate they can get
The episode of Doug On his own, the bluffscouts episode were they thought Mr. Dink was eaten by a bear? Nightmare on Jumbo Street, Halloween episode at bloodstone Manor, These are just 4 episodes that I absolutely love and they are kind of creepy but I love them for that. I remember watching Disney’s Doug, but I was turned off after a several episodes in because Doug was being mean to Patti and I started not to like that.
I hate this episode,I love christmas specials, but this episode made me cry, porkchop is my favorite character, all he did was save the damn girl,it's her fault for not paying attention to the warning sign of thin ice
The only thing I don't like about the Disney run on Doug was not getting Billy West back to do the voice
@OfficialKimIsNoob
2 ай бұрын
If I remember correctly, disney said something like "Billy west is too famous for us" (just summarizing what I remember) but then years later he goes and does the voice for nick (Nancy's dad) on big city greens
I felt the double length episode somehow predicted the O.J. Simpson trial a year later back in june of 1994 or perhaps the Harvey Weinstein thing back in late 2017! (It's true that some cartoons can predict the future as well as t.v. shows!)
@justincasesept92

With the difference that, in the two cases you mentioned, the accused was really guilty. If there is anything this episode reminds me of, is Stephen King's The Green Mile, which was written TWO years after this special aired, so makes me giggles to think of good ol' Stevie watching Doug.
This episode teaches a very valuable lesson. Don't ever try to help anyone. Everyone only cares about themselves. Say you drive up on a car wreck and the driver is unconscious and the car is starting to catch on fire. So you try to do the right thing and pull them from the car to safety. You saved their life but then they claim you caused some sort of injury when you pulled them from the car and now they want to sue you. And the sad thing is that they will probably succeed. 99.9 percent of humans are evil.
0:14 the girl in the background with the donut outfit is the darkest thing ever.
Honestly a lot of the nickelodeon Christmas movies are kind dark or are at least not all happy jingle bells. Rugrats- Gift the Magi references with Phil and Lil giving away their things to get their sibling something to go with what the other gave away Hey Arnold- Trying to find Mr. Hyunh's lost daughter and almost failing Rocko's modern life- Big Prejudice episode with the elves
Having finished Hey! Arnold, I'm interested in checking out Doug. I've seen some episodes of the Disney version and found it alright, but I hear many prefer the Nickelodeon version.

I only saw this episode once as a kid and it made me sad for Porkchop. All of it could have been avoided if they had let Porkchop show why he did what he did. It was either Beebe gets an injured leg that'll heal in time or risk hypothermia, with an ever bigger chance of drowning.
0:00 aww hell no. Doug spoilers? I'm outta here!
The Simpsons and Peanuts weren't the only ones that had Christmas specials that tackled serious issues; there was Fat Albert and King of The Hill (Namely in 1998's 'Pretty, Pretty Dresses'.). With that said, I liked Doug's Christmas Story. One of the better episodes of the Nick version. Gave us a different take on the Holiday special we weren't expecting, and I applaud the show runners (at the time) for going a different direction than what we usually see around December. 🎄 🎄🎄🎄🎄

Doug's Nightmare On Jumbo Street. 😈 "Here's Porkchop!!!!"
The happy endings in cases like this aren't happy unless the false accuser is flogged for his insolence.
The one episode when Doug is having nightmares after seeing a horror movie
Christmas episodes were supposed to be jolly and as a Kid I hated this episode so much for being so alien to all other christmas cartoon episodes I'd watched.
So it's a typical childrens cartoon from the 20th century's last decade. Quality sure wasn't on short supply back then, even with miniscule budgets and cell animation! Anyone else?
I love how in the episode it’s established that pork chop does know what money is and lends it out
This is one reason I believe Doug was a better show than Hey Arnold, Hey Arnold didn't have real moments like this.

Chalky sucks in this episode. At the beginning "I saw the whole thing. He attacked her".
This is the darkest doug episode it is true but a lotvof 90s/early 2000s shows did xmas episodes where tragic things happen so i am not surprised at all.

Is that why the Bluffs are purple?
I need to know who the fuck came up with the ideas for this episode because whoever did obviously had serious hatred towards porkchop.
*The following are the musings of a Salty SEAGULL named EARL who just shows up in my posts whenever he feels like it!* [EARL the Salty SEAGULL:] "I vaguely remember this episode (was never really fond of Doug do to my hang up on dramas where characters get caught up in embarrassing or awkward situations which is why I tend to avoid teen dramas)! This was definitely one of the better ones as its a story about Doug fighting to save his dog from being unjustly put down due to a misunderstanding! Still I admire it for its bleakness & how everyone in the town just turns their back on Porkchop despite the fact he's clearly intelligent & helps people out as shown when Doug remind him of all he's done! Still I get where the Bebe's dad is being overprotective (still the episode makes him unreasonable & out of touch rich person who only cares about money rather than painting him as just an overprotective dad who believes Porkchop to be vicious! Still the Mayor making public perception worse by taking credit is definitely on point (I kinda wish the townsfolk called him out on it at the end) for a politician! Still as an adult, teen, or some older kids you know they aren't going to kill off Porkchop in a Christmas episode & that Doug will find someway to prove his innocence! Still I do applaud them for Bebe trying to point out it didn't hurt only to be ignored as its all too real (children often have no say in such matters & nobody asks her if she thinks Porkchop should be put down)! Still I like the way Porkchop helps Doug prove his innocence and everyone realizes it was Porkchop doing everything he could to save her from falling through the ice & how he saves her in the end! Ultimately its dark overtones help the episode's ending! Still some of the human characters reactions are frustrating as they forget what kind of dog Porkchop is though the ones concerned more with the holidays does make some sense as you know some people focus on the holiday itself rather than the spirit of said holiday! Also the Christmas episode highlights how one should think of their pets around the holidays!"
