Small local pet stores are highly variable. They can be the best in the business, or they can be the worst. I haven't been in the hobby for a while, but when I was, I got most of my animals from pet stores. Some of the small local stores were filthy, smelly, and full of neglected animals, with disengaged staff who obviously wanted to be anywhere else. Others were clean and well kept, with staff who were passionate about the animals. Sadly, the majority of stores were in the former category, while a small number of excellent ones stood out from the crowd. When I was starting out and didn't know any better, I bought some animals from the bad stores. They didn't do very well. I learned my lesson and figured out which stores deserved my business, and I had better luck after that.

Also remember it's also competitive. I'm in the Axolotl business & these breeders are ruthless to each other.. they will leave bad reviews or post all kinds of drama on FB ..Just because you see a bad post about a certain breeder doesn't mean it's true. If she/he has a five star rating & awesome reviews. It's all good lol

I just got two adult axolotls from a breeder and I've never owned them before I have plenty of years of experience with all sorts of exotics but she made sure I knew everything I would ever need to know about them before I left. Unfortunately she was no longer breeding but still gave me her number if I ever had any questions

I had a really good experience when I bought a ball python from NERD. I was planning on buying an enchi het pied female that I had seen on their Morphmarket page. Turned out that they had already sold her. They offered me the chance to look for another ball python and offered free shipping for the inconvenience. When I found a coral glow enchi fader het for pie female. She cost more than the enchi, they sold her to me for the same price as the enchi. Which was really nice of them to do that for me. I'm trying to start up my own ball python breeding business. Brian Barczyk and Kevin McCurley are the reason that I fell in love with the reptile hobby.

I started watching during the pandemic. I mainly wanted to learn as much as I could about reptiles, specifically snakes, because I had spent the first 45 years of my life afraid of them. Then I found a few creators that I really liked, like Adam, that I enjoy learning about all the reptiles and amphibians from. I'll likely never be able to own any of the animals I'm in love with; but the education has been amazing!!! And I no longer run to the farthest place in my house if I see a garter snake in the yard 😂😂😂

i personally will always recommend adopting from rescues, too. i am also biased as i volunteer for one, but they get in a lot of sick animals and they put so much care into trying to make them get them better. they also do an intense screening process to make sure that if the animal has some sort of underlying health condition, that you know, and that you have the ability to take care of their needs. i know my people and i can and will always vouch for them. (another pro is that i also get all the juicy reptile influencer drama because they're tiktok famous lol)

I buy most of my reptiles from MM. I’ve only had one bad experience. I was sent a ball python COVERED in mites. Like not just fresh babies they might not have caught. Grown mites. It was horrible. I confronted the breeder and he apologized and said he’d been fighting them at his “facility” and didn’t notice the one he sent me had any. Like yeah okay buddy 🙄 I’m forever paranoid about that now when I’m receiving a new snake. Most breeders I buy from I make sure to ask and verify they check for mites before sending. Haven’t had any issues since 🤞🏻

I respect just about everything you put out. At the same time I become concerned when I hear a suggestion “Not to buy from someone that only has a one or two star review”. We started our collection in 2020 and had our first three clutches of Ball Pythons in 2023. We haven’t offered any of the hatchlings for sale yet but probably will in the next couple of months or sooner. Obviously we don’t have any ratings yet. You are not the only content provider that has made the comment about not buying from someone with low or no ratings. This makes it pretty difficult for someone new to get started. We don’t have any $100 animals to offer, so perhaps that will help us. It would be nice if influencers would balance out their criticism of low ratings.

  • @WickensWickedReptiles

I never said don’t buy from places like this. My point was if there are tons of ratings and the average is very low, it’s for a reason. I’d never discourage anyone from helping out a new business. I once was a new business with no name too.

When I first got into reptiles I unfortunately met my fair share of "I know better cause I've been keeping ball pythons in a shoe box for 20 years" that really broke my spirit. But luckily as I've learned I've met some amazing breeders. One of my favorites is Zodiac Geckos. She treats everyone like family and is so nice. The kind of person you can talk to for hours and I always stop and chat at expos. Met her at her first Repticon all the way to vending at Tinley!

I have been going to this shop for a few years despite the mites, the neurological issues, the weird problems, and the constant source of only wild caught animals from this shop. Although different worlds, I’ve been in the hobby of keeping exotic isopods(roley Polly’s) and there are many online sellers which I have bought from who sent me animals which where sick and ended up dying of days later or hours after delivery, and the seller had a no dead on arrival returns after 2 hours of receiving, which really soured my experience. Luckily I found a reputable smaller seller who I just recently bought some animals from and they are doing absolutely amazing. Gotta stay careful in any animal keeping hobie

I got my first ball python from a local breeder. I'm extremely happy with my decision. She had reasonable prices, was willing to communicate and even helped me troubleshoot some stuff as a brand new keeper. The snake I got is incredibly healthy, and even though she doesn't have a whole lot of time to socialize her snakes, my snake is very curious and active, has eaten well this whole time. Some of it is the genetics and individual of the snake, but still just incredibly impressed by this breeder and very happy that my first reptile buying experience was so good. She also had a 5 star 100% positive rating on morph market with something like over 300 reviews and had been on there at least 5 years so I knew the reviews were legit. Considering I don't have a whole lot of experience, I couldn't have asked for a better experience for my first time. Also, I live really close to snake discovery and I've been to their shop/zoo a few times. I haven't bought animals from them, but really impressed how they operate as well. The staff was very willing to answer my newbie questions.

That's another thing that makes it tricky though. Different people have different standards for good facilities and care. A lot of people on KZread seem to have a pretty good opinion of NERD. But on the other hand the reptile Discord server I'm in, majority of the main folks and mods absolutely hate NERD, consider it a horrible facility with awful reptile care and the associated YT channel to be a negative influence on the hobby. It just varies so wildly between sources. I think the only person I've literally heard nothing bad about is SerpaDesigns. Every other big breeder, basically every other reptile YT channel, someone has said something bad about in one of the places I float around.

  • @ElecManEXE

    @ElecManEXE

    3 ай бұрын

@@WickensWickedReptiles I'm not looking to start drama so I'd rather not put out names. But no, I would not imagine any of them have been to the facility, most likely it's just videos they've seen online. Given the standards of the server I imagine much of it starts and ends with racks / enclosure sizes and they don't really need much more than that. That was the point I was making though. People are gonna have different lines for what level of care they deem acceptable, and a few people having negative takes can then spiral into an echo chamber of negativity. So it can sometimes make it hard to determine a truly bad apple from someone who just has a different approach. For what it's worth I have a generally much more pragmatic opinion on racks and have a pretty neutral opinion on NERD since I've never dealt with or looked into them. It's a good Discord server for a lot of things, but they do certainly have some very... strong opinions, and I've basically just come to the conclusion that talking about reptile YT in general just isn't a thing I ever do there. When someone else does I have a good eye roll and carry on.

The local pet store I go to works to rehome reptiles that have been worked with and they are so sweet. They encourage the customers to interact with the animals, even if we don't buy them. I almost walked away with the sweetest rainbow boa, if she hadn't been beyond my means

Unfortunately due to chain stores taking over the market, a lot of private stores and breeders have gone downhill. Even at local shows people are having to compromise on ethics, quality, and sourcing or get outcompeted. Always do your due diligence.

That’s hard because as an animal lover wouldn’t you want to get them out of a situation like that. I understand that you don’t want to get animals from someone who mistreats them because it would benefit them and keep them in business but at the same time those animals are going to die if you don’t do something about it.

I don't collect, I do have some pets. A bearded dragon that I got at an expo from a rescue site, the guy was so nice! He showed us so much and explained enclosure size! That was great because I had a 35 long with a reptile type set up. He told me it would be fine for a little while but I would need a larger one soon.they were all males and had vet checked and everything. My friend got one that had metabolic bone disorder, but he told her everything and she has more experience than me and although not reversible, could be managed. We got a card so we could call with questions. The great thing is we wanted pets. Not breeders.so it was easier to get a deal every once in a while. Most people are nice I think. And other vendors that we did not buy from also were eager to share information. Care sheets, phone numbers or business cards are great! One year I missed out on a beautiful betta fish, I didn't know they had them there and was unprepared to bring it home. It was their last expo and they didn't want to pack up all the fish left because they only had a few left. I wish they sold more books..

I'm not sure if you've covered this before and I found different information online so I would like an opinion on it. Why do some bearded dragons have such bulgy bulbous eyes? I paid for a Brazilian rainbow boa, and the next day I got a call from the person that I bought it from and she said she took my snake to the shipping company the snake was processed and waiting for me to pay $540 for insurance and then it would be delivered to me. I realize it's my fault I did not research the company. I had been looking for over a year and when this supposed breeder had rainbow boas in stock it was always the same price and I thought it was reputable. That company and the shipping company are both still found on the internet. I turned them in, but was told there was nothing that could be done to keep this from happening to other people. Honestly if I had just done more research it wouldn't have happened. I felt so stupid, but I learned my lesson. I hope that makes sense? I left out little bits and pieces that weren't really relevant.

I price my animals at MorphMarket prices at expos. So many jack their prices ip because its an expo. Not us. We had someone say there must be a problem with them because they are so cheap. These were basic morphs and a few hets, as we are fairly new (10 yrs) so we are making combos, making hets. We have quite a few visual stuff, but to make them.better, I need to make hets first.

I hope you dont mind helping a newbie out, have a wonderful day. I KNOW you trust and love NERD. I live in NH (US) and their store (zoo creatures) is not very reputable. Their snakes usually come with mites, their bearded dragons are in 2 x 4 habitats for like five animals. I’ve gotten bugs from there that ended up being infested with maggots. It sucks too because this is the only reptile store in state. I would be interested in a tour and honest opinion of this facility for sure.

I wish I would even have some kind of a market for reptiles here in Germany 😅 My boyfriend and I are looking for a pair of Shingleback skinks because they're pretty awesome. But I can't find them anywhere. Even our breeder from Austria, where I got our Bluetongue, doesn't know anyone who breeds them. Guess I'll have to look out at some reptile convention? I've never been to one before, but I guess that's the only way to somehow find someone who has a lovely pair of Shinglebacks 💕

Thoughts on buying "Captive bred" vs "Wild caught"? Seems like it would be really easy to pass off WC as CB. I guess WC will tend to have scars, and over time you will find out (possibly) they have parasites.

I have been very lucky with my reptiles, all three are great animals that are healthy and I got them three different ways. The first one was a local breeder and they have lots of different reptiles, they were super friendly and clearly knew what they were doin and sexed the animal in front of me, and once they saw I knew what I was talking about and this wasn't an impulse buy they even dropped the price a bit. The second one was on Morph Market from a breeder with a great rating and the snake came well packaged and got here quickly. The third one was at a local reptile show and he was super friendly and clearly knew a lot, he delivered the snake himself even though I lived like 35 miles from him. There are a lot of great people in this hobby and I'm glad there are different ways to get the animals that you want.

Not a reptile but.... I had ordered a tarantula online a year ago (at the time of the event). The sling many months later it turned out to be the wrong species. I contacted them, they looked at the picture I had just taken, confirmed the species as not the one I had ordered. I had no hard feelings - many species' slings are very similar so a mistake could be overlooked. The spider was otherwise very healthy and a female. All I had wanted at the time was confirmation that what I had B. boemhi when I had ordered a B. emilia. I love Betty and would never part with her, I just wanted to make sure I wasn't crazy. Without me asking for anything, they offered a 1.5 inch confirmed female B. emilia, shipped to me at no cost and advised I was welcome to keep the B. boemhi. They did as they said and the spider they sent me was -gorgeous-. Tarantula Canada rocks.
