I will be completely honest when I first saw the video I was very put off by the keeping 6 leopard gecko together. Despite my negative feelings rather than unsubscribe and stop my patreon, I figured I would wait and I was not disappointed. This is how we learn and evolve in herpetoculture! We should all strive to give captive animals more opportunities for natural behaviors as we gain the experience and ability to do so safely. I think this is a perfect video. It meets a need in the reptile community(misinformation), its message is awsome, and adams demeanor was perfect:he was calm, collected, understanding, and overall chill with peoples decisions. Keep up the great work!

I absolutely love this set up and did not bat an eye when you put 6 females of the same size together. Cohabitation should not be done by everyone, but if you know what you are doing and keep and eye on them, then do it. Social media can be great, but sometimes it's just downright awful.

Betta fish. The males will rip each other apart, which is why generic care says all Bettas can't be with any other Bettas. But in reality, if you have a large enough tank with the proper parameters, you can have multiple females bc they only fight if they have to.

I think the only issue was that it was 4 feet long instead of 8 feet long, because of the inability for them to run away from others if there is the event of a violent scuffle between the geckos.

I loved his video on this explanation it seem that 4 feet has been working in this specific example and if it was 8 feet then the argument that it would be best to keep them in a 12 or 16 foot tank however if I were to set something up like this I might go for 8 feet or 12.

I have also been keeping groups of Leopard geckos together for over 10 years. Never had a problem. I know who can get along and who can’t in the first 10 minutes together. Normally only siblings anyway. I also have some I keep separate. Case by case. Just like people. Common sense. Just give them enough of everything and they will work everything out.

I am not against cohabbing. I'm not even against cohabbing different species. I disagree with your idea of 20 gallons being suitable for 1 leo. It's a very old and out of date size. BUT for the sake of the argument, I'll grant you 20g per leo. Using your metric of 20g per leo (per your previous video), 120g for 6 leos is 6X the space which seems correct, however, your calcs are based on your minimum size metric and ignoring the fact that your floor space is not 6X the size of a 20 gallon. It's closer to 3X the floor space, assuming you're using a 20g long. You're not utilizing the entire enclosure. At bare minimum, if you were going to do 6 leos in this space, you should use the whole thing. Spray foam up the walls, add ledges, tunnels and hides all the way up the back and sides. Full custom background man. For 6 leos, go well beyond the minimum recommendation per gecko. Had you gone for at least a 6x3x3 or better yet 8x4 footprint with custom background loaded with ledges and tunnels, then you would likely have started up a proper conversation. Honestly, the first video felt like you knew it would cause controversy but arrogantly shrugged it off for views. Emphasis on that's how it felt to me, not that it was necessarily what you were thinking. Even with the knowledge of leos living in colonies or pseudo colonies, your defence in this video doesn't hold enough merrit when putting such a high number of leos in a small footprint. Because I feel like I may get flack from your fans regarding my experience, I've had reptiles for almost 30 years, and worked with everything from small geckos, up to crocodilians, large pythons and monitor lizards. My current leo is 19 years old in a 48x18x18inch enclosure, fully bioactive. He was in a 4x2x2 but it was broken when we moved.

All of this ^ The issue isn't cohabbing, it's putting six geckos in a space that can't be fully utilized. It's 120 gallons in theory, but not in practice. Leopard geckos are mostly terrestrial, they need more space than is provided in a 4x2x2.

@jadiebunny8563 In the original video, he clearly states he didn't sanitize in any way beyond knowing the stuff doesn't have pesticides on it. Seems like an insane thing to do when you have 100 animals. That's a good way to get a mite infestation or any number of parasites/ diseases. Yeah, maybe no pesticides, but how many wild animals have pissed and crapped on that spot? You have no idea.

Exactly. Surface clean is not clean. A good solid low temp bake will kill the microbes and parasites. I was surprised this video didn’t address this point too. I think gallons are more appropriate for fish and birds that use vertical space. Land animals should use square feet. The habitat may have plenty of hides but that doesn’t mean it isn’t overcrowded. He talks about leopard geckos living in colonies but I didn’t hear a definition of a colony.

@@jadiebunny8563 The paper he mentioned refers to "loose colonies." Whatever that means. Also, yeah, he didn't sanitize anything he put in there. I'm not quite sure why someone would do that because that's a surefire way to introduce brown recluse eggs into your house. Ask me how I know. 🤦‍♀️

I really didn't think what you did with the geckos was a problem. You definitely seem to know what youre doing. So it wasnt a worry for me. I would say just based on the post i saw from the company that sponsored you, it probably would've been a better idea to let them know you were going to do a "potentially controversial" video with their product, so you don't lose their support in the future. Again, i didn't doubt your knowledge about keeping them together. I think its a really fascinating, cool idea, and its awesome to know that it is possible to do things like that, when someone has the proper knowledge and space for it.

If a company sponsors a channel that features various videos about, say, beer and then acts indignant when that channel makes a video about beer, the sponsor is the @$$hole, not the content creator. The creator was under the impression the sponsor knew what they were paying for. I mean, one would either have to be deeply stupid or completely disingenuous to sponsor _this_ channel and then pull their sponsorship over that particular video. I don't think they're stupid. I think they've gotten whatever business off Adam that they could and now they're playing it up for the crowd. Slimy like politicians.

just because an animal lives in pairs/groups in the wild doesn't necessarily mean that's how they should be kept in captivity. this is very nuanced, so please let me explain. there's a huge difference between truly social species and species who live together out of necessity. a great example of this are small desert hamsters (commonly referred to as dwarf hamsters in the pet trade). robrovskis in particular are often observed in the wild living in male/female pairs or family groups. however, studies have shown that in captivity, their stress levels are much higher when they're housed together. this is because, although they live together in the wild, they're not actually social. they don't get mental/emotional enrichment from living together. the benefit of living together for them is safety, as they're very small prey animals, and reproduction. because we're not able to flawlessly replicate the conditions of the wild (and we don't necessarily want to - like we don't want to have natural predators living with our pets), we need to be open to adjusting our care based on behavioral differences we see in captive vs wild animals. I don't know if there have been any studies done on stress levels of leopard geckos who are vs aren't cohabitated. that is something I'd be very interested to see. however, I do know that when housed alone, captive leopard geckos do not observe the same behaviors as a truly social species that's housed alone. for animals that are actually social, when they're housed alone the majority of the time they will exhibit extremely high levels of stress that can manifest in the form of excess aggression, boredom, depression, or even self-mutilation, depending on the species and individual animal. so in my opinion, right now, with current research, there's no reason to cohabitate leopard geckos except human benefit. and I don't believe in doing risky things with our animals that have no benefits for them. and could I be wrong? yes absolutely. maybe in five years someone will come out with a research paper proving that captive leopard geckos have lower stress levels when they're appropriately housed in colonies. but this is just a reminder that pretty much nothing with husbandry is simple. just because you see someone else doing something doesn't mean you should do it, too. and just because you've been doing something for a long time and haven't had an issue yet doesn't necessarily mean it's the right thing to do.

Funny I never saw anything really wrong with your previous video but boy did you open a can of worms....lol....kudos to you for sticking to your guns. I like your videos especially since you are Canadian based (I am here on the west coast) and love that you explain to us that you don't need to go out and spend hundreds of dollars to buy the "reptile" items and that you can do it for less money and make the reptiles healthy and happy . I have 2 females that have been together since babies and the have a big enclosure (24Lx18Wx18H) with lots of spaces to hide and climb. They are also in an area that we can monitor them closely....most of the time they are together...very rarely do I see them apart. I tried to separate them once and they went off of their food and started to lose weight so back in together they went....I have even seen them hunt together.

I missed the Tiktok, and I'm glad I did. Interestingly, I had leopard geckos about 25 years ago. It was my first ever reptile. I started with 1 and then fell in love with a second (both females). At that time - nothing advised against keeping them in same sex pairs! I had 2 for about 10 years! When I got back into reptiles a year ago, I was shocked when I read that they "had" to be kept separate. I now have 2 females together, with 2 humid hides, 2 warm hides, and 2 cool hides. When they were babies, I had to do supervised feeding and feed separately because 1 was a much better "hunter." That is the only problem I've had. I had a 2nd setup ready if needed, but they are still foing fine. The only thing I didn't like about your wnclosure was it wasn't aesthetically pleasing to me - but that is just my personal preference! Thanks for all your informational content!

I love this kind of "controversy". It's how we move forward and become better reptile stewards. We don't have all the answers, and much of the information in the hobby is based on information that dates back to the 90s and the original AOL/Compuserve pages covering these animals. If we hope to move forward, we need to try new things and continue to attempt a replication of their wild habits. Respect. This is why I always return to your channel. You don't fall into dogmatic rhetoric, but keep experimenting to findthe best care for our herp friends.

Love this video! So necessary! ❤❤❤ I’ve been keeping herps for nearly 30 years, 10 of that professionally. It is absolutely true that care guides have to be written for the beginner. Too many choices or intermediate husbandry techniques and accidents happen, too often with dire consequences.

This was the nicest way to tell people to kick rocks I've seen in a long time. Love the content bud.

I love that people care about animals and I hope that never goes away, but I wish they’d put all their rage and effort into actual animal abusers.

Question for you Adam (if you see this): what are the benefits of cohabbing leopard geckos? You did a great job explaining why cohabbing can work and be free of issues, but is there any net benefit aside from saving space? Replicating wild behavior is always the goal of course, but as keepers we try to expose our animals to eustress and not distress. We know there is potential for distressing situations when cohabbing, but what are some of the beneficial eustress factors? If there is no pro behind the mountain of potential cons, why risk it at all?

Your prior video was blatantly lazy. You got a free-to-you enclosure, and told people they could set up a habitat for 6 animals very cheaply and without overthinking anything. In this video, you detail the number of electric appliances used to maintain this habitat, who's total would not be cheap to buy, initially, nor wouls the monthly cost in electricity be cheap. You claim a "120 gallon" habitat, of which, generously, 60 gallons is useable to the geckos as an enriched environment. Are your bricks and sticks secured to the floor, the walls, and/or each other? This was also left minimally addressed in your initial video. This is being spun as a cohabitation debate. With what you explained andshowed in the first video vs. this video, the first video is by your own standards, inadequate care for the 6 leopard geckos, and would not be nearly as cheap or easy to set up as initially presented.

This was a really good response video. I saw a video about this yesterday so I’m glad you stood your ground on this. I use to keep two female Leo’s together in a 4x2x2 several warm hides several humid hides etc never had any issues but always got back lash on doing it. I think if you haven’t had any issues in 15 years it’s probably fine 😂

Thank you Adam! Wonderful to hear the facts presented front and center to back you up. If this had been a debate, I do believe you'd have won. I kept lepords together over 10 years ago with no problems at all in a similar set up. It was fascinating watching them interact on a daily basis. So glad I have an open mind.
