I think Olivia Octavius is at worst a neutral evil character since she tends to act more out of curiosity rather than sadism.

Using the D&D system, I'd probably put her under Lawful Evil. She shows she has no issues hurting or killing people to get what she wants, but she's not out there killing or torturing at random. You can write off some as "following orders" but, as she says, it's _her_ collider, she knows it could destroy the city or more, and she really wants to see it run.

Olivia telling Peter B, "I for one can't wait to watch" hints to me that there is a little more than morally neutral curiosity at play here. She wants to see Spider-Man suffer. There is so much implied back story here. Add in the fact that Aunt May calls her Liv, a name that only her friends use, and it suggests a personal story of tragic consequence involving Ock and the Parkers sometime before the events of ITSV.

Something interesting that was pointed out to me is “If you stay in this dimension too long, your body is going to disintegrate. Do you know how painful that would be Peter Parker?” Which shows she knows the repercussions of bringing someone who doesn’t belong in this dimension and yet she’s willing to bring Kingpins wife and child (as many as he wants) so he can watch them disintegrate. That’s pretty evil.

I got the impression that “glitching” and eventually entirely disintegrating when dimension hoping, was new information revealed to her through her quick observation of Peter B. Looking at his saliva under a microscope etc. It is implied her deal with Kingpin has been in the works for a while so she probably did not intentionally plan to put kingpin through that, and rather then reveal the information to kingpin and abort the mission all together and risk getting tossed away once she stopped being useful (see what happened to prowler for example). She just with held the information and was sort of stalling for a solution. I think it’s actually great characterization for both villains Kingpin is shown to be ruthless but pragmatic and doesn’t Maintain useless people(assets) as they become liabilities. Another subtle way this is revealed is during his intro just before he kills blonde Spider-Man. He is perfectly happy to have prowler finish him off but hesitates the moment Blonde Spider-Man reveals to kingpin he had information about what’s in the collider portal. The information makes blonde Spider man still useful so Kingpin extracts ALL of the value before finishing him off. Liv is intelligent and aware enough to realize this and carefully curates which information she reveals to him and when. Even over emphasizing that kingpin will “get what he wants” from “our” collider, reaffirming her value to him.

Something interesting you missed is that once Olivia knew Fisk's family would literally melt she didn't use that information to try and bargain for that extra time she'd asked for, she didn't even use it to explain that their new Spider-Men problem would solve itself, instead she kept it to herself and told him what he wanted to hear; paired with the way she sneered and shook her head at Tombstone when he pulled the gun, she wasn't just not scared, she was /insulted/ that he would try that. Together it makes that conversation take on such a spiteful air, "You think you're the one in control here? You don't wanna give me what I need? Okay. Lets see how you like what that gets you."

That ending scene is a play on a trope. They show their teamwork and hit her with so much of it that it would knock out any normal enemy easily. And she wipes the blood off her face. It sets up the super climatic battle that is coming… which is then hit by a semi. Flips the trope on its head for comedic value and shows that she is her own worst enemy. She caused the chaos around her and didn’t pay attention to those surroundings. So intent on her prize that she didn’t see the damage it was causing and got taken out by said damage. Also, in the main marvel universe Doc Ock marries aunt May at one point, so them being a thing…. Yea.

Honestly, Doc Oct, in any form is best when they are morally dark grey. A spectrum for heroes I often see is "Hero, Anti-Hero, Rogue, Villain" and Doc Oct should be firmly in that Rogue area. WIlling to do a lot for what they want to do, but not straight up destructively so. Actually can be reasoned with if there is any real dangers but usually out for #1. One of my favorite story lines is when Doc Oct took over Peter's body, he was actually a "better" Spiderman and "Better" Peter than Peter was. The problem was, Octavious lacks Peter's Empathy. He moved from Rogue to Anti-hero. While Peter was always a Hero. Oct was doing the "right" thing but it lacked the caring for others, especially for the criminals he was busting. Where Peter, when written well, and I'd argue anyone who is a proper Spiderman, cares deeply about everyone they deal with. Especially the wrong-doers.

aah I'm so glad you did one of these on Olivia Octavius! I also view her as someone who was goal driven and needed the resources to reach that goal regardless the cost (but not evil). One of the things she rambles about in the film is how people thought her theories were crazy, so she had/has something to prove. She loves her work and the excitement of seeing all her hard work come into fruition takes her beyond rationality or conscience. My theory with Aunty May and her is that she was either a classmate or even student/ apprentice of Aunt May, but once May realized that Liv was willing to go beyond what is ethical in order to achieve her goals, they parted ways. Sort of an "I cannot condone your actions and want no part of it." .. but honestly shes one of my favorite characters and I hope it isn't the last we have seen of her.

The unexpected costume change was a hoot. Is the doc *more* polite while under stress? During/between violence, impending violence. Roleplaying games tend to differentiate between charisma and manipulation; Liv's scientific mindset tends toward the latter. At least one Otto Octavius has married Aunt May, as I recall? I like to think Liv will come back after her own tour through the multiverse, if she hasn't in the new movie.

I completely agree with your explanation of people committing terrible actions so they can achieve their greater ambitions. Reminds me of Otto Octavius from Spider-Man 2. Otto's dream was to give the world clean energy "Like a perpetual sun providing renewable power for the whole world." After the accident, he continued to pursue his dreams even when it meant harming anyone to achieve it. That's why Aunt May's quote is so powerful. "Sometimes, to do what's right, we have to be steady, and give up the things we want the most. Even our dreams."

Hi Georgia! Your cosplay is soooo cool! I heard about the Milgram experiment. I like how you connected it to Olivia Octavius' character. I didn't think about how related it is to her, but it's a great explanation. I had similar takeaways when I had learned about the Milgram experiment - that people are capable of so much (both good and bad), especially if there is an authority figure and social pressure - as well as stigma over disobedience. Great point about exposure. That is very true. So cool how your cosplay changed with the scenes. :) Excellent points about conformity. The pressure to conform is very powerful and you're right that those who do not conform are ostracized. I've struggled to fit in before and, thinking back on that, I think it relates to the pressure to conform (which also reminds me of your video about self esteem and I guess worries about not being 'good enough' can tie into worries of not conforming). I know I'm going off track, but your points got me thinking a lot and reminded me of your other videos (which are also great :)) Lol I agree the bagel scene is a good example of company culture. It's one of my favorite scenes. I don't know if Aunt May and Doc Ock had a friendship before either. Great question. Excellent point about the greater good and the pursuit of something that is very important to us, regardless of the cost. You bring up excellent points about ethics and how there are many shades of gray. Many people both in fiction (like Olivia Octavius and, a different Marvel character,, Matt Murdock) and reality (like J. Robert Oppenheimer) (I like how you included his picture and name in the video) are complex. Lol I agree that Liv being hit the bus wasn't the best. Love the film, but yeah, her fate could've been done better. Good video!

Amazing video. My only point is that during the experiment, they tried doing a control experiment with only authority figures, and many people not only protested but refused to do the experiment. It was only after they said in the experiments how it was helping advance knowledge that they administratored the lethal shocks. Onlt when they thought they were doing things for the common good. Love your videos so much they helped me become a way less angry person and focus on patience. I practice everyday and it helped me quite a lot. Thank you.

In the og universe the original male doc ock fell in love with aunt may after his original plan was to try and scam her out an energy plant but his feelings for her became true after awhile. ock is kinda of a lonely guy. So it plausible that in this universe that liv and may were either friends or romantic partners just like in the og universe.

I despise the words "Good" and "Evil" applied to people. No one is, by default, more capable of doing good things, and someone else is more capable of doing bad things. Each of us are capable of making independent choices at our expense, or at the expense of another. Thinking of people as good or bad can very quickly lead to a narcissistic assumption that you Are "good", or a self destructive pattern of belief that you Are "evil". Both forms of thought displace responsibility for one's actions Away from yourself because you are "Good" and therefore you are justified, or "Bad" and therefore you have no choice.

I’m kind of curious how different exaggerated personality types based on horoscopes may be dealt with during sessions. Thought it might be interesting so I’d mention it!

I don't think you can believe in good without also believing in evil. I think for most people it develops over a course of gradually increasing morale compromises (like it probably did with this version of doc oc); but it's still a conscious choice between what we know to be right and what we know to be wrong.

TWO COSPLAYS in one video! IT's not even my birthday, Georgia! And you are laboring under a misconception, Georgia: Having manners in a supposedly stressful situation is NOT being "classy". It is a power flex. = ) It is to make their opponent feel insignificant and feeble as they are seemingly unable to cause alarm or concern. The experiment you speak of reveals MINIONS of evil. Not masters of evil. They would not conceive of or orchestrate such acts themselves. And you are wrong, Georgia: There IS indeed evil. Whether you like it or not or believe it or or not. I have fought both subtle and overt evil. I happily square off against "authority" figures promoting evil. Too often I am the only one. BUT causing evil-minded people to not only feel insecure, but to also fail, is an unmitigated joy MORE people should experience! = )

11:51 There’s a fan theory that Aunt May and Liv had a romantic relationship, this is something that happened in the comics with the male Doc Ock. If that’s the case the most likely thing is that they broke it off due to their relationship with Peter Parker.
