THE DARK KNIGHT (2008) “Why so SERIOUS??” | FIRST TIME WATCHING | MOVIE REACTION & Review

Ойын-сауық

Christian Bale returns as the Caped Crusader to head off against Heath Ledger's iconic Joker in 'The Dark Knight'. Marc and I LOVED the second installment of Nolan's Batman trilogy, mostly due to the incredible action scenes and Heath Ledger's performance.

Heath Ledger's 'Joker' is what I point to when people say that you can't make any changes to a well-known character without pissing off audiences. You absolutely can, but ultimately you have to respect the source material and the legacy of what's come before in order to pave the way to build upon it.

This is a great point. I would say, not to take anything away from Ledger nor Hamill, but that 4 seconds of Jack Nicholson smashing the mirror and lightbulb post-surgery and lurching up the Stygian dark staircase sounded like a man loosing his grip on sanity and descending into madness. I thought that laugh was master acting. I heard the same master acting after Ledger said "...people will die. I'm a man of my word," and started maniacally laughing. That, and the horrific way he said "look at me!" - instantly terror. Sadly, I missed most of the Batman cartoon because I was in med school at the time, but I hear good things....and how can anyone go wrong with the Chosen One's son playing the Crown Prince of Crime? It's a no brainer.

Heath Ledger has set the standard for villains in all movies for me. You notice how a few times you reference Katie Holmes in this from the last movie. I think that's because when you see her on screen you see Katie being someone. In this I never saw Heath Ledger there was only the Joker and this performance is something I will never forget.

Excellent point!!!! That’s very true. And honestly, we’re not jabbing either Katie H or Maggie G really- they both did great (better than I could do! Lol). It’s just hard in my opinion to do a lot with those roles when the attention and story are clearly weighted towards other actors.

I love how much of this movie's effects were practical. The flipping of the semi truck. Blowing up the hospital. There's a reason so much of it holds up so well: it's not cgi that dates over time. While the cast is stellar in this movie, the star is truly Heath. As you both said, I wouldn't have recognized him at all. One of the best villains of all time. Indeed one of the most dangerous kind who has nothing to lose, as the bandit that Alfred dealt with years prior.

FRICK YES! ❤ As you’re well aware I was sooo pumped for this reaction. This is not only my favorite of the Nolan trilogy but one of my favorite movies of all time. I think I mentioned it in my comment under your Batman Begins reaction but the Dark Knight was actually the first one I saw because I was super curious to see what Heath Ledger would do as a Joker. And my oh my, my brains turned into a mush after my first viewing, I couldn’t comprehend the greatness of that performance. I wish I could put it into a more cohesive comment but his Joker has lived rent free in my head for 15 years now lol. It was so exciting to see you and Marc cringe and get all tensed up during the Joker scenes. I was like “yes, yes, it’s workinggg”. I believe it’s partially due to the score for Joker scenes… Zimmer’s done an incredible job at giving those scenes a super uncomfortable scoring. I mentioned that in my previous comment so I wonder if you noticed how eerie the Joker musical theme is. Another fantastic thing about Joker, and particularly in this film, is that as the story progresses you still don’t know what his motive/endgame is. At first it seems it’s money, then it’s power over and controlling the mafia, then he seemingly has some sort of personal vendetta against Batman, then it’s just establishing chaos etc. And eventually, you’re not even told what his goal was. So typical of Nolan. Gosh, I love this movie. I could ramble on lmao. Super stoked you enjoyed it the way you did. ❤

It's my opinion, the Joker makes up an origin lie to terrify his chosen victim. (1) He made up a lie about an abusive father to a crime-lord because of the high incidence of absentee fathers in the criminal community. (2)He made up a lie about ruined beauty and nightmare marriage to Rachel because she's a beautiful woman about to marry a powerful man. The missing piece of your life, Joker describes as horrific, destroying hope with your own dreams.

Arguably the best comic book film ever. Batman Begins and Dark Knight Rises are still my personal favorites, but this one is still the best overall. The whole trilogy, but especially this one made comic book films seen as serious, critically acclaimed art, not just money-making blockbusters. Still angry that it wasn't nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars, it's still the first comic book film to win an Oscar for Heath Ledger. And Heath Ledger... I mean, come on. That was an Oscar well deserved. And he made the Joker into a serious villain, and iconic for the screen. So iconic, the character got his own film and won ANOTHER actor an Oscar.

I am absolutely sure that you have this somewhere in your comments, but I’m too lazy to go look for it. This is one of the most popular things to tell “newbies“ to the Heath Ledger Joker. The reason why he was constantly licking his lips was because the prosthetic makeup would dry out, and then start to separate from his lips. But I kept it moist, then the glue would not have to be reapplied as often. And it became an iconic character trait out of necessity. Also, if anybody tells you that the delayed explosion in the hospital bombing was a mistake, or a misfire, which caused Heath to “improv” confusion and hitting the initiator… that is absolutely not true. It was in the script to have a delayed explosion. I don’t know how that the rumor got started, but it is absolutely not true. I am so glad you guys enjoyed it! Ppl scoffing and laughing is downplaying it. The reception was downright nasty. PPl even made a petition to prevent it from happening. Yes, one reason was because of his 'teen heartthrob' roles. But it was mostly because of his role in brokeback mountain. Which is hilarious because 1) Nolan chose him as the joker because of brokeback 2) Heath's acting was fucking crazy in that role. The first time he actually came off as intimidating when he brawled with other ppl (and the scene where he threatened to punch his ex-wife, holding his fist up and kept cocking it backwards, barely restraining from hitting her... fucking terrifying) Daniel day lewis considers Heath's role in brokeback one of the best performances he's ever seen.

I have NOT seen Knight's Tale, however, and I am hearing a lot of feedback now about how good it is. I had no idea! And if YOU vouch for it, then that's major. Yeah you mentioned Gotham and I put it on my to-watch list, either for the channel, or more likely bingeing on my own ;) But Knight's Tale I think would be a good one for the channel!

Can't really be amazed by Heath Ledger without having the view of Heath Ledger everyone did before TDK came out as the pretty boy in teen roles and thinking Nolan was a fool for even casting him and thinking it wasn't possible. He shut them all the fuck up GOOD. You can't even see that it's Heath, even in the scene with his makeup off, people would've been blown away by him in person and his career skyrocketed if he had lived.

I remember the nonsense that happened when it was announced Heath was casted. Some ppl hated how he was the 'pretty boy in teen roles' but majority of it was because he was in brokeback mountain. And that's really hilarious considering that movie was literally why Nolan chose him XD. Heath already broke out of the 'pretty boy role' in that movie. I didn't think he could be intimidating, but proved me wrong he when he brawled with other ppl (the scene where he threatened to punch his ex-wife was terrifying. Jesus, still gives me chills. He held his fist up and kept cocking it backwards, barely restraining himself from hitting her). I was hyped as hell to see him as the joker. But even then, NOTHING could prepare me for the joker. It was REALLY funny to see everyone rage and doubt him and how drastically their opinions changed after watching Dark Knight XD

There is an interesting little connection in this film; Joker uses a school bus at the bank, and also jumps into a school bus full of hostages after blowing up the hospital. Ledger mentioned that one of the inspirations for his portrayal was Scorpio, the killer in 'Dirty Harry", who kidnaps a school bus filled with kids. Scorpio was based on the Zodiac killer, who wrote a letter to the San Francisco Chronicle stating that he wanted to shoot children as they got off their school buses in the afternoon.

This might be the best superhero movie ever made from a technical perspective. The original Tim Burton Batman was excellent, especially for its time, but it was a different kind of movie. It was a comic book movie. This is a movie based on a comic but with more adult, “realistic” elements. Deadpool was great, but that was a comedy. It’s hard to beat this cast, and it’s a shame Heath Ledger passed away right after filming this, since he’d literally just proven he could do more than play a pretty boy heartthrob for the first time. Before this, he was best known for A Knight’s Tale and 10 Things I Hate About You.

Ok so Harvey obviously becomes the other Batman nemesis, Two Face. There hasn’t been a good Joker since Heath Ledger, but there was another Two Face, played by Tommy Lee Jones. Rachel definitely dies and Harvey blames Batman for her death, which is how he went from hotshot DA to villain. To be fair, this Batman series has been far less “hokey” (for lack of a better term) and a bit more like a serious action series. The biggest problem with DC blockbuster films is that they chronically mess with casting and with the timelines and villains. Marvel did it too (especially with Iron Man 3), but a lot less frequently than DC has done. Unfortunately, Christian Bale walked away from the role after The Dark Knight Rises and the franchise kind of fell apart. They have been trying to revive it ever since, but it’s not getting the critical accolades from both fans and critics as this trilogy got. (Sidebar: I am a HUGE nerd 😂)

So here, we get not just a great Batman movie but great movie in general. Heath ledger is amazing of course. Some of these stories may be hearsay but I’ll say them anyway. Supposedly Michael Caine had a line at that party that the joker interrupts, but he was so distracted by Heath Ledgers performance he forgot the line. Another thing - that iconic blowing up the hospital scene - the myth was that Heath thought that the second explosion was going to go off immediately so he repeatedly pressed it in character until it went off… I heard that’s just a myth. The second explosion was intended to be delayed. Also, idk if you noticed or not, the switcharoo with Rachel and Harvey (it probably just wasn’t in the cut.) Bruce was fully intending to save Rachel but the joker tricked him by telling him the opposite addresses. With the Holmes vs Gyllenhall debate.. I think they represent two different parts of Rachel’s personality. Katie was a lot more likely to end up with Bruce than Maggie I think. If Rachel was played by Holmes here I would have found it more difficult to accept that she didn’t stay with Bruce. Anyway, that’s my “spiel” lol

They just did that because he died so tragically." So my brother looked at me and said "Watch the movie. Then you can look me straight in the eye and tell me he didn't deserve it" So, even though I am not a batman fan, I watched the movie just to be able to say that I had and that I stood by my first comment. And I walked into my brother's room. And I looked him straight in the eye, and I said "I withdraw my previous objection. Holy f*ck" And my brother just smiled and said "I know" I read somewhere that when they filmed the scene during the fundraiser, Michael Kane was so ... mesmerized by Heath's joker that he actually forgot what he was supposed to do and he just stood :O

Yeah that’s fair, and I could see where you would think that, but nope. Marc never really watched a lot of tv or movies at all- he was more of a music type- and I was always more of a TV junkie.

@@Holland4evahh Haha yeah, BELIEVE ME I do the same thing with other reactors. “You’ve never seen TITANIC?? Really??” But yeah, we’ll definitely say up front if we’ve already seen something (like our Home Alone reaction). Thanks for at least asking though, and not just accusing. We appreciate that! :)

It’s funny you mention that because throughout the editing process when I watched again in more detail, I thought about that same thing. Even Joaquin Phoenix’s excellent performance would not have been AS good, I don’t think.

I definitely prefer Batman Begins bc it feels more like a pure Batman movie, but they’re both in my top ten movies of all time. So is The Batman. That’s my favorite. 30% of my 10 favorite movies are Batman movies lmaooo

Really? I'm actually glad to hear you say that because I actually really liked Begins also from a purist perspective as well. I love origin stories, and that one was great. A good friend of mine strongly recommended The Batman, and I watched it outside the channel. Loved it! Thanks for your comment!

@@DavidvsFilm yeah. Batman Begins features a phenomenal portrayal of Gotham city, the Batcave, Wayne Manner that the next two Nolan films just disregard and forget about, I like the Alfred-Bruce relationship more in Begins, as well as it’s much more of a Bruce Wayne/Batman centric story where I see TDK as more of a villain centric story. Don’t get me wrong, I adore both but Begins is just a near perfect BATMAN movie even if it isn’t what one would call a better “film” if that makes sense.

Hey again. Still never heard back from you about my book lol. (I know it's been longer then I stated it would take in my email) But finally the sequel to it is just about published. I just have to do the cover and make sure amazon accepts the damn thing with no problems. I had hoped to have it up earlier then this but shit happens, things popped up and all that jazz. I did also publish another book not to long ago. Granted it's not a story, it's a small little book that is one of my Magnum Opus's. I consider it my "1984" if you are familiar with George Orwell. (Was actually hesitant to publish it) Anyway let me know what's crackin!
