Also the earlier 'you hammered to the point of desperation, and in their desperation they turned to a man they didn't fully understand'. Because Alfred already knows that the mob hiring the Joker isn't going to end well for the mafia bosses, because the sort of man who wants to watch the world burn isn't so fussed as to who's in the flames.

Not even hurt people as much as just creating chaos or destroying a system. I think people refer to Ledger's Joker as an Anarchist. One of the most powerful and scary lines in cinema in my opinion. As kids, villains were just villains, and heroes were just heroes. With time, we learned that heroes are flawed and that villains are wounded. This was the first time since childhood that our generation (born in 1990-95) saw one of the best known monsters brought to the big screen and he wasn’t a wounded child or broken man. He was the same kind of monster we knew villains to be as children. Someone who just wanted to watch the world burn.

This is deeper than that. The cackling cartoon villains of our childhood were evil because they wanted power, they wanted to rule the world, or they had the specific aim to destroy or take over something. Joker's evil is more terrifying because there is absolutely no driving force behind it, except chaos for chaos's sake.

The greatest part about this scene imo is that Alfred fundamentally misunderstands the thief as well, which is really the entire point of the story. The government was using the gems to bribe the local tribesmen in exchange for loyalty. The thief removes the gems to presumably remove the bribery and in response the government burns down the whole forest in order to catch him. The story reflects the entire movie and adds to the unreadable multilayered aspect of the jokers character. It indirectly reveals his motives.

Michael Cain should have gotten an oscar for his performance as Alfred in The Dark Knight. Having actors as good as Christian Bale and Michael Cain lead a superhero film makes them absolutely ludicrous. They're so good. I really believe that the reason these movies were so successful wasn't because it was Batman. It was simply because the script and the actors were perfect. I understand bringing in action stars for these movies - but people forget the reason that people love the characters in comic book films is because of the characters, not the action. If your actor can't portray a realistic version of the character that people believe, sure it can still be fun but it won't give people an experience of being in the situation. I feel like Bale's Batman was 100% thrown under the bus. Sure, they traded a lot of the actual comic canon of the character and the more "detective" nature of Batman to the wind for action and story, but I feel like this character could have been so much more. I am still sad that we've not gotten a Superman film that accurately portrays Clark and gives him a personality. The closest anyone has ever come was Tom Welling and he refused to don the cape ever again after the Smallville finale.

On top of that alot of what we would call villains both real and fictional except for the real crazy ones have been thru something crazy or a serious of things which can drive a person mad without the right support which not everyone has.... basically villains aren't born they're created with the exception of really mentally crazy people who just will or could never understand basic human emotion, right from wrong or some type of principles at least

1:08. I really like Bruce's quick reaction here. Bale's acting choice, wether intentional or not, makes it look like Bruce understood right there, before Alfred was even done speaking. Bruce is smart. It "clicked" eight there, and he immediately looks up at the screen to stare at Joker, realizing what he is. And he lets Alfred finish the story only to confirm the point to himself plus his basic manors and respect for Alfred of course. And then of course filmmaking wise, the audience needs to be told as well. But you can see Brice immediately snap into focus as soon as he "gets it" and realized what he's really dealing with.

That's interesting. Reading the comments, a lot of people understood that quote in a different way than me: some people just want to see the world burn just for the fun, by sadism and cruelty and because they took pleasure by doing it. What I understood was: some people just want to see the world burn because they hate it so much and lose all hope the world could change for the best. When I see the joker, (heath ledger's version) despite his jokes and non-sense, what I see and feel is pure hatred.

That scaning of face and trying to understand how to defeat Joker is really good choice of showing two adversaries. Batman is fighting criminals and tries to do it logically, woth advantage on his side. In other side, Joker cannot be scanned, reasoned woth, he is chaos and anarchy in living flesh, he has a plan, but relies on his skills as an agent of chaos. Logic vs chaos

That perfectly encompasses the nature of the Jokers character and why out of all the villain's that Batman has, HE is in my opinion the most dangerous and the most terrifying. The Joker doesnt do the things he does because of some cause or ideology, not for vengeance, not for profit or financial gain, not for power, not to be superior, not to prove that he is smarter than batman and certainly not for love. He does it because its fun.
