Well this also happens with all (US owned) social media. Their intention is to depress/dehumanize people, a sense of distrust of humanity while promoting the automaton dystopian future.

@@itzajdmting We are living under TechoFeudalism. The illusion of democracy is over when 5 companies (Google, Meta, Amazon, Apple, Microsoft) are more powerful than entire countries (including the US). The have not only the most concentration of money in history, but also the most concentration of knowledge/data. The can not only predict actions of people but also induce new conciousness (in this case: depression, anxiety, fear and numbness, to better manipulate them, creating passive consumers).

Thanks for putting this out there, Tim! Very interesting and informative. We all know the Chinese government (note: not their people) to be brutally oppressive and insidious - that's not new. But it's helpful to learn the specifics about how exactly they go about this manipulation, and what the effects are on western society with something like TikTok.

It’s a Citizen journalist platform, government and city leaders would be shaking in their boots. When something bad happens, tiktok is the fastest way to make something horrible or good known from all angles.

Agree. Nice to hear an informative piece that touches on a number of concerning issues. Powerful (and subtle) food for thought of what isn’t shown at the front but what goes on behind the scenes. Sadly some comments I’d say are due to the impact of what had been shared & a number of individuals are more easily persuaded (opposed to digging to find the actual truth). A thank you to Tim for this angle. Wondering if this same type of angle could be taken across all platforms (Meta to even Snap and X, for example), and see if there are similarities or where they differ - to ones that are the most genuine. Also, it’s interesting topic to explore censorship of explicit content where some are doing a better job that others, and others not censoring etc. Many layers but definitely takes someone game enough & informed enough to help better educate those who are interested in these dynamics.

@@DrAshleyMBerge Thanks for your reply, it's nice to know I'm not alone in my commentary! The overarching issue for me is how effective a tool social media platforms are for distraction on the whole. (Could go into the McLuhan angle of how screen lit devices are a medium of "change" in themselves, but I won't for now!). Your point re Meta, Snap & X or generally any platform is really valid. If you go on to consider that many people are using multiple platforms, the "cross pollination" of chaos is boggling no? Especially when there are generational skews in usage, experience and skill to discern information from misinformation. Censorship again is a wild topic and as with media in general, has huge ramifications. It's all part of our evolution now and we're not very well equipped to manage.I like the term 'social depth' brought up in the full episode. It's an interesting one on macro and micro scales when considering how to foster agency over our own minds and actions both separate and together. Right, I'm off into nature now for a walk, thank dog! 🙂

Ask yourself, why is the Chinese version of TikTok in China so different. In China, they amplify technology, science, achievement, educational achievement. Not only that, in China, it also has a scroll time limit of 15 seconds between video for everyone under 15 years old. Lastly, all social media gets shutdown after 22PM. Shutdown, justvwrap your had around that one. Now ask yourself, why would they make these differences

@@evolutionXXVII I don't believe grocery stores are dangerous because one of the items they sell, ice creme, which is fine for most people, might be misused by some tiny percent of its customers. Suggesting TikTok is dangerous and should be banned is the stupid equivalent of suggesting a grocery store should be banned over selling ice cream?!?
