The Dangerous Times - Indy Car Racing in the 1950's & 1960's

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Auto Racing was certainly dangerous in the 1950's and 1960's as Steve Zautke discusses with noted author, Denny Miller. The duo chat about drivers like Pat O'Connor, Ed Elisian, Jerry Unser, Jimmy Bryan and Tony Bettenhausen. All brave gladiators who gave it their all. This discussion is not for the faint of heart. Viewer discretion is advised. Thank you to Vintage Indy in Brownsburg, IN for their hospitality. Look up Sachsational!!! I've known about all of these Indy stories from the '50s and '60s for decades. But the amount of detail you provide is just incredible. Well done.

I was watching old WindTunnels with Dave Despain, so I guess it recommended you! My wife was at the Greg Saks/McDonald tragedy and also for Graham Hill's victory. I've read books about the 'curse' of that '58 field, and also an Art Pollard biography. My first 500s were won by TK, Then RHR - So I'm a relative rookie. Great Content, Thanks!

About race cars with tragic histories... In July 1990, Rich Vogler lost his life in a sprint car race at Salem, Indiana (if I remember right). Fairly recently I found out that several years later another driver died in that same car, and not only that, but apparently that car is still racing to this day. Also, in the wreck at the start of the 1958 Indy 500, Jerry Unser went flying over the wall. Fortunately he got out of it alright....but he wasn't so fortunate a year later. Also, on May 12, 1991, Gary Bettenhausen qualified fastest for the 500 -- faster than polesitter Rick Mears. He didn't get the pole because the run was on the second day. Right after Gary got out of the car, ABC's Jack Arute had the gall to remind him that thirty years ago to the day, his father had lost his life right there on that straightaway -- as if he needed to be reminded. I still think that is one of the least tactful things I've seen a TV reporter do.

Me and my dad were watching that Vogler race. My dad knew immediately it was bad. I think his helmet was rolling down the track adding to the horror. It was violent and upsetting.

The tires were awful in those days; ditto brakes. With updated brakes and tires those cars weren't so bad.
