The Dance - Garth Brooks

COVER of The Dance by Garth Brooks. I do not own this song, but man oh man does this guy sound like Garth!

This was the song my daughter chose for the father-daughter dance at her wedding. She got cancer and passed away 2 years later. I can't believe how fitting and prophetic the lyrics are. I break into tears every time I hear it STILL, after 16 years.

In 1992 I was a Marine stationed on Okinawa, Japan for 12 months at my first duty station. My roomy, Mathew was a white kid from Fremont, Ohio and I was a black kid from Bronx, NY (by way of Trinidad). He would play country music and watch NASCAR every chance he got. I was going crazy. Garth Brooks was his favorite. Then he started listening to Reggae and R&B (just a little). My son was born while I was overseas, Mathew is the one who told me I had a boy because my leg was broken and I couldn't get to the Duty phone on the 4th deck (floor) of our barracks. Mathew was also at my side during the funeral service for my son 29 years later. Music.

Now I'm feeling lost and lonely. They tell me time heals just feels like a black hole getting bigger. I don't wanna go anywhere or do anything as we were always together. I don't feel right going into the world without my love. I go to work but only because the bills keep rolling in. If not for that I'd never leave the house. I worked as the forklift driver for two weeks at the texas stadium in the early nineties for mr brooks. He would jump on my fork and ask me to to take him whereever. I was the last person to drop him off at his bus on the final night. I love this man. Met his father his mother and had a smoke with his sister. When the trellis fell garth showed up with mr mcbride. I was in the stands he was wearing a george strait hat and gym shorts and saw heard garth say: “when will enough be enough. That’s when I knew this man was the real deal, and I will always love him for his care for humankind. He visited the hospital of the injured people. I was not one of them. His love for mankind will always resonate with me in my heart. I love this man as a brother from another mother.

My sister fighting cancer one day we spend time with that will forever be etched in our hearts. She wanted to listen to music. She danced with her children. This song came on when then she asked my brother to dance with her. They danced the whole song. She rested her head on our brother’s shoulder/chest area like that’s where she just wanted to feel comfort & that she got for the rest of the song. My brother gave her comfort that her idiot husband wouldn’t give her. He was to busy starting to replace her. Her family her core family will never replace her. She’ll forever be missed. She took a piece of all our heart with her. We love you sis more than words can say. ❤

It first reminds me of the relationship I had with my father and the video images of John Wayne take me back because my father admired him and actually looked like him. The first time I heard this song, a very special relationship had just ended. My 12 year old son was seated next to me in the car as it played. I felt every word and somehow I knew he did, too. Fast forward 13 years. It wasn't long after that break up that I did meet 'him.' We were married and while we raised are 3 combined children (and adopted a fourth), good and bad happened, but we were so glad we were together. I think my son and his daughter did better in life because of it. Unfortunately, he had contracted Interstatial Lung disease where he worked. After 20 months of difficult, painful bouts, he died only a few months after our 11th anniversary and our fourth child's graduation. It has taken years (20) to get where I'm at. This song takes me back, and makes me glad that original dance had ended.

I lost my wife of 23 years and our 3 year old son in a house fire on Feb 27th 2023. I'm haunted every minute of the day. I was lucky to have them in my life, but this song nails it completely for me. I remember dancing with her to this when we first starting dating and it takes me back to that moment every time. I miss my family so much🥺🥺🥺

This was always one of mine and my late father and grandfathers favorite songs ever. Lost both in the past 2 years and always go back to this just to remember singing it riding down the road. I was classically trained in shool for music and vocal training. And even my late grandmother loved hearing me practice this song. One of the greatest regarless of genre.
