I can't remember the name of the person who wrote it but apparently when she wrote it she was going through a really bad divorce and was on the coast of Florida and that made her think of the line I hope you still feel small when you stand beside the ocean.

I'm with you at almost 75. I want this played at my funeral also. Info going into my will that it is played or the lyrics are read.

After my daddy died when I was 7, my counselor gave me a journal called the I Hope You Dance journal and it had the lyrics in the front. I wrote in that journal so often and still to this day, this song gives me so much hope. The lyrics meant a lot to me then and even now.

yeah i remember a friend teased thinking i didnt listen to the music from our own culture and i couldnt help but think that i will literally listen to almost anything that sounds nice, has a nice beat, melody, message, etc. you'll miss out on a lot of gems if you stick to just one genre, language, etc. not that it's bad to have a favorite, just dont like putting down other ones

I am so sorry for your loss my dear, i hope your daughter dances and passes that love along and may your family's hearts be warmed forever by this song and many more songs of hope, love and perseverance. sending warm and loving energy to you and yours. I wish I could give you a great big hug and I hope the pain becomes a little bit more tolerable. I know that kind of pain lingers, but it's finding ways to live with that pain and not become consumed by it. I heard the most beautiful expression yesterday that brought me to tears while watching a movie and, in this movie, the widow says to her stepdaughter, telling her about her deceased love of her life "he wrapped a string of lights around my heart." I know that I am a complete stranger, but pain is something I am all too familiar with and anytime I hear about someone who has experienced a terrible tragedy, I cannot help but become overwhelmed with emotion because I don't just empathize, I am a highly sensitive empath and I just want so badly to help everyone I meet or hear about with their pain and let them know that even if we are strangers, I care and I wish I could heal their pain. I hope I haven't rambled on too much. May peace and love be with you and those that you love and may it protect you and them as well.

This was my song that I danced to with my grandfather at my mother's wedding. He passed away not too long after that, and then my mother passed away five years ago. The craziest thing about this song is it came only months before I was born (May of 2000, I was born in October). My parents always tell me that on the day I was born, Lee Ann was actually singing this song on tv in a nearby room. That alone made this song special to me as I grew up. Today I officially turned 20 years old, and although it is crazy to think how much the world has changed in those 20 years, it is better to focus on how great of a life mine will become in the future. i was also born in october of 2000 and my mom heard this song playing when i was born and calls it my “baby song” so this song is very special to me too.

My mom Loved to dance. I certainly hope and pray she is now dancing with my dad in heaven. She's waited 32 years to finally join him. I will continue to dance here on earth to keep both their memories alive. They have given me the precious gift of the love of music, song and dance, even if it is amateur. I love singing and dancing all the same! Keep on dancing Mom and Dad! I love you!

I think you're right! The central idea in this song is that life does not go on forever, and you need to find the joy in life and embrace it before you no longer have the option. Sweet song.

I always played this song for my son when he was born at 25 weeks and weighed 19.5 ounces. He is now graduating in less than 2 months.

Hey there, my Mom left this world when I was 10 years only, too. I am now 36 and still miss her very much in my life. A couple of days ago I dreamed of her playing catch with my son and me. It is like she wants me to know she is still with me and my kids or how she would love to be around with us. I still don't know how, but you and me will have to learn to live and be happy without our Mums. I believe they are not gone forever. We will see each other again one day.

Doctors wasn't sure if my son was going to make it after birth, he's two now use to sing this to him when I was pregnant with him. Also sung it in the NICU to him. Very special song. He's had two diaphragm repairs now and doing awesome. God is a miracle worker!

We played this for my mother/son dance at my wedding in 2000. Still going strong in 2024 with 3 kids, that I hope dance as much as my beautiful wife and I have. I'm also glad the official video is the "Sons of the Desert" version 😉 Happy valentines day ❤

My son passed away suddenly a year ago. This was his go to song. His Birthday is today May 20th , he would have been 39. I find myself listening to it over and over, sad but very comforting. I had it played at his funeral as his friends walked into the church.

I played this song for my daughter on her 18th birthday

We have been imprisoned for many years We have been dancing it has paid off .Don't bother shutting the gate we are Home we are Frreeee💙

" I hope you dance" is tattooed on my right foot. My Mom gave me this advice when I suddenly lost the hearing in my left ear...15 minute "episode" and it was gone and I was left with the constant snowy tv sound in my head. I was a RN and prayed it would not change my career. It didnt... 15 years later my brain has taught my ears to listen in stereo again. The human body and mind are amazing. I thank my Mom for not letting me give up and keep listening to the music. Never stop dancing🙏

My first night home with my boy. I heard CMT playing and heard this. Was up worrying to death and this played 😢. Hormonal and this made me cry like a baby. This was my dance song for my sons wedding. Cried like a baby again. Just don’t blink 😢 They grow up so fast. Love my baby boy ❤️

For the most part you’re right. But if you look hard enough you’ll find it. It’s mostly smaller and undiscovered artists. You definitely don’t hear songs like this on the radio anymore. Mainstream music is shit. This song will always be amazing and is timeless.

This song is perfect on what life lessons I've wanted my sons to carry with them through out life. "Life might mean taking chances but they're worth taking, Loving might be a mistake but it's worth making..." Beautiful Lyrics and singer!

When my sister and I visited Yellowstone for the first time in 2001 and we were driving in, this came on the radio. To this day, that song reminds me of that moment of awe!

I was going to dance with my mother to this song at my wedding. She passed away six months before we got married. Four years ago, and the pain will never go away. I miss you Mom! A few years of marriage, two cross-country country moves I have to say my life is pretty good. I have an angel to look out for us. To anyone reading this comment, never fear the mountains in the distance. Go for your dreams. You will not regret it!

I have been lucky to have both my parents into my 50s but my Dad died last year and my Mom, with whom I am really close, has poor health. This song makes me cry, as it is, but if I listened to it after that fateful event, I am sure I would be a blubbering mess. My Mom always encouraged her kids to get out there and do what they can - Go Dance!!

I introduced her to this song because it is very powerful for all of us who's life is being threatened by health issues such as cancer and illnesses with no cure. Life is hard but we must fight till the end.
