Mavs defense was incredible in the Finals this narrative that it “could’ve been better” is just straight up lying. The Celtics literally had there worst 5 game stretch offensively the entire season and playoffs they didn’t score over 107 points in any game. There percentages at the rim and mid range were atrocious which is exactly what the Mavs defensive scheme forces you to do. The issue was the Celtics just made more 3’s had the Mavs even shot league average from 3 they win that series and even the Mavs FO agrees with that because they went out and brought in 3 more shooter’s and still upgraded there defense. For the people saying there defense is cooked it’s not relied on to be elite one on one defenders it’s about being physical which Josh Green, THJ and DJJ weren’t at all and they replaced them with much more physical defenders in Klay, Grimes and Naji. Klay isn’t replacing DJJ he’s replacing THJ who was there 3rd leading scorer this year and he was so bad on both sides of the ball he lost all his minutes in the playoffs. Take away any team’s 3rd leading scorer all season and sit them the entire playoffs and not play them at all and see how far the teams go.

@@NumberTobiyes the Mavs bench and role players all vanished. From the bench Exum gave them great minutes at the end of the regular season season but gone in the playoffs. Kleber was great early in the playoffs before the injury, not so good after. Lively was probably the best. THJ of course fell off a cliff early in the season, and wasn’t even good before, could just get hot from 3.

Mavs have 3 of the league leaders in fg% at the rim, gafford, lively, Luka , and that’s not even including kyrie as a finishing talent. Outside of curry, Luka and klay are the only players to shoot 38%+ on 9+ 3pa, and that’s not even including kyrie as a 50-40-90 shooting talent, mavs had nearly 10x more lobs than the next team in the playoffs everyone calling them lob city 2.0. On the flip side the mavs generate the most open 3s in the league but not the personnel to take advantage shooting middle of the pack on those shots. Well now they not only have the most gravity at the rim in the league, they have 3 of the best shooting talents of all time on the team. I think this is not only going to be a historical offense but one of the most entertaining of all time.

He was over the course of his career one of the best shooters in NBA history. What he is now is a rapidly aging and semi delusional former star player who still hasn't come to terms with the injuries he suffered. As a Warriors fan for years I couldn't be happier that he off the team. Let's put aside all the obvious and well known things that the injuries took away from him. The biggest issue is that he still wants to try and prove he's the player that should have been voted all defence and should have been top 75. What he actually is now, is a big guard/average wing who is too slow to guard the perimeter and cannot get the separation on his jump shots that he once did. He has terrible court awareness rarely plays any team defence. He almost never makes his rotations and as soon as he's beaten off the dribble (which is almost all the time) he can often be found wandering aimlessly around the court. He doesn't box out, nor rebound very well and to go along with his offensive chucking he doesn't move off the ball as well or as quickly as he used to. When he inevitably takes and misses super difficult shots he can then be found pouting and crying to the ref instead of hustling back on defence. Over the last few seasons he was the reason the team had to have a players only meeting to try and address his tantrums and still he whined and complained when Kerr finally after way too fucking long benched him. Even when he was then playing a smaller role it's still obvious that his legs are almost completely gone. When he plays too many minutes or too many games in too few days then he can't even make wide open shots because of how much he relies on his legs to generate power. Even if the Warriors had got nothing back for him they would still be better for him being off the team. Klay will always be remembered for his amazing all time games in his prime but the Klay the Mavs just traded for is not that guy anymore. At some point they will have to grapple with the fact that they will need to bench him too.
