It amazes me that there are people who don't think Malala deserves the Nobel Peace Prize. Just... listen to her, listen to what she's saying. This is a sixteen-year-old girl who has already survived an assassination attempt -- and instead of keeping a low profile out of fear of another attempt on her life, she is STILL using her voice to advocate for girls' and women's education and to fight the oppressive forces that tried to silence her. What's more, she's not advocating an iron-fist approach. She still wants to treat her oppressors like people. Please tell me who deserves it more than she does.

Colby Gleason Well, for one, she's an inspiration to people worldwide -- specifically, to women and girls, whose education she is fighting for. More concretely, though, she and her father co-founded the Malala Fund, which is "focused on helping girls go to school and raise their voices for the right to education," according to the Twitter. I'm not sure whether her book's proceeds went to that fund, but apparently that is/was a possibility. Throwing money at causes doesn't solve the problems, necessarily, but she's earning the prizes and recognition she is for a reason.

ramywiles I'm 16 myself (I live in India) and you have a point, I'm inspired by her. It makes me want to get up and go to school everyday so that I can help humanity have a significantly brighter future than what we're envisioning right now (i.e., WW3 - or an event that might trigger WW3). She's absolutely right, education plays such an important role. But ignorance seems to be a thriving attitude among a lot of people these days, especially privileged people (an observation). I feel like if everyone just opened their minds instead of being blindsided by societal norms and conformed and traditional beliefs, our progression and evolution as a species would be easier. Malala is doing what she can, and she's a brave young girl that a lot of Middle Eastern students will look up to as inspiration. She'll be their motivation. A baby step is still a step. :) To borrow the words of a friend, "Systematic discrimination and power abuse is the most powerful form of hate. When the system is against you, there is very little you can do to fight back without being immediately crushed."

+talksolot Gurdeep is a Punjabi name, and although there are Punjabi Muslims, they are in a minority to Sikhs and Hindus. Saudi, Iran, and Afghanistan don't have exclusive rights to Arabic, Farsi and Pashto names. Also, as far as you know her family could have been Pashto, migrations and cultural intermingling were a common phenomenon and continue to be to this day. My family originates from Syria and Saudi Arabia, but I still consider myself an Indian National. I am a Muslim with an Arabic name who happens to have been born in India and I am not a "self hating motherfucker" as you so eloquently put it. On a different note, was the hate speech necessary? Did you not listen to what this little girl had to say about respecting each other? I wanted to say a lot more and not all of it was going to be as respectful/civil as before...just try to keep other peoples views and sentiments in mind when you write a comment like that. Malala is a perfect example of a Feminist who isn't too extreme, and actually fights for women rights for the right reasons with pacifism. I'm reading her book right now, and I'm not surprised that she became who she is today. If we want to have kids like Malala, we need to be like Malala's dad, the adults who know what's right and stand by it, that's the best education that we can provide for our kids.

faultroy I know it was a long time you wrote this comment, but damn... I can only see positive things that this girl and her book get more exposure. She has a powerful message to women all over the world. Women aren't weak, knowledge is power. Of course people are trying to get money, but I don't think that The Jon Stewart show is going to sell Malala T-shirts, Malala-drinks and start a fastfood chain called Malala-burgers...

It's sad how kids in the west complain for HAVING to go to school while kids in the east fight and die for a right to go to school. This girl is, and should be, an inspiration to all, not just teenagers. I hope that in the near future I get to see more examples like her and hope that one day humanity will restore my faith in people all together. She, in my opinion, deserves the "Nobel's Peace Prize" because she is one of the few people I have come upon in the recent years who can't be considered to have one ulterior motive. She is pure goodness and deserves to go into the history books next to Mahatma Gandhi, Mother Theresa, Dalai Lama, Martin Luther King, John Lennon and others. And if I may say, this girl is one of my greatest inspiration, not just because she fights for what she believes but because she fights, selflessly, for the rights of others and that all at the age of 17.

Lora, I have read her book and seen both the movie (He named me Malala) and the documentary (Class Dismissed.) She comes from an educated family who supports her in her activism. Her Father owned and ran a school that he started 3 years before Malala was even born. Malala began reading at age 5. And her mother, as a child, briefly attended school, but became discouraged as she was the only girl in a classroom full of boys, and she wanted to be with all her girl friends. Love of education, and truth, permeates the entire family. Malala was the top student in her class in Pakistan, and won many trophies and awards, even as a young child.

she's not saying that because she knows that words are powerful and you don't show a person how great you are by showing anger towards them. she's fighting for peace, education and equality. her being Muslim makes her know that it's people's minds that need to be changed. terrorists do exist, but there are also people like she said that collaborate because they're scared and those people need education to know that the talibans are just tyrants who want power over people nothing more.

This girl is a hero for what she was brave enough to stand up for and what she is doing to help other children have access to education around the world! How many of you criticizing her can say the same thing for yourself? She is an inspiration!

*EDIT:* a lot of people have been misreading my original comment. I am not bashing on Malala, nor am I denying the bad in Pakistan. Much of Pakistan's infrastructure has been damaged because of extremism, corruption and poverty. And yes, I realize that I am privileged because I received an education and lived a good life, and I'm not ignoring the people who are not able to do so. If I say that Pakistan has good that is widely ignored, that does NOT mean I am turning my back on the bad. What people fail to understand is that that's not all there is to Pakistan. Malala is a brilliant woman; she has done a lot for the education of Pakistan, and I am grateful. But it disturbs me how the Western MEDIA has picked up her story and is circulating it over and over again, while failing to mention everything good in Pakistan. Has anyone heard of the world's largest welfare organizer? Abdul Sattar Edhi. He's a Pakistani. How come he's never gotten any attention? So before you go on a rant about how I should be "ashamed" of myself for my "stupid" comment, maybe you should step back and read my comment from an objective point of view. - Malala is an inspirational young woman. She is extraordinarily brave, and she has stood up for what she believes in in a way that I never could. Looking at her makes me feel kind of worthless. I respect her and I admire her and I am inspired by her. BUT. The attention she's getting from the Western media and Western organizations is slightly problematic. I recently moved to the United States from Pakistan, and because of her story, there's a very negative view of Pakistan as a whole going around in the US. Whenever I tell someone I'm from Pakistan, I get one of two reactions: 1) "Oh, where that girl Malala was shot?" or 2) "Oh, how do you know English if girls there are shot for going to school?" Hmm. I don't blame these people at all, because that's the image the media projects of Pakistan. Let's see. Malala was shot in Swat, a rural area in Pakistan where poverty is rampant and poverty is a breeding ground for terrorism. But in bigger Pakistani cities, an increasing amount of girls are getting an education. The view people have of Pakistan is that girls don't get an education at all. That's not true. Look it up. There isn't such a huge gap between the male literacy rate and the female literacy rate. I am literate. My mother was literate. My grandmother was literate. My cousins are literate. My cousins' children are getting an education. ALL of the women in my high school have gone on to pursue higher education (whether in Pakistan or abroad). Another thing. The official language of Pakistan is English. Not the national language, but the official language. Most schools teach English, and some major schools have begun to teach English as a first language. So Malala, even though I think you're a brave woman, I think your story does more damage to Pakistan than it does good. :( And how about the 132 children killed in APS in December for being the children of soldiers fighting against the Taliban in North Waziristan? Don't they deserve recognition? Or does the fact that they were CHILDREN OF SOLDIERS FIGHTING THE TALIBAN not support Western propaganda of demonizing Pakistan as a whole?

What I believe is that we should not recognize a minority as a whole for a country, especially if we are dealing with terrorism and religion. Yet, we should give them the attention they deserve, in the case of uneducated women. Before I began teaching myself about other countries and their influence, I knew little to nothing. Unfortunately, the media decides to emphasize the terrible parts of human nature more than it does with the good parts. We tend to shut ourselves out as a country. As I began learning about other cultures, I realized that in the United States, we do not receive a full image of the many incidents that occur all over the place. It is truly disgusting when people label Islam as a terrorist religion. However, I do think Malala's cause is justified. Though there are many parts of Pakistan that educated, there are some that aren't. Those minorities should be heard and her message is needed for those who are blinded by hate. For your situation, I am truly sorry. I wish people didn't do things like this, or regard a person differently according to their place of birth. Sure, Malala's message may have been misinterpreted by those who only focus in the negative. She is advocating for equality, but human nature is making us focus on the hate that is being misread. I wish we wouldn't do such things, but is blatantly obvious that it is hard to spread love and peace. I hope those who died get the recognition they deserve. Malala could have died just as easily, but she was given another chance and she is taking it.

Aveyond Keiver I agree. I think what Malala is doing is justified. Her cause is nothing but inspiring, and she's a wonderful human being, and I will always defend her in front of people who criticize her cause; there is nothing to criticize. When the attack happened in December, killing 132 children, a lot of people criticizing Malala realized that those 132 children were all Malalas in a way, but the difference is, they were killed and couldn't raise their voice. But the fact remains that people are ignorant, and a lot of people will never do what you have done. They will never actively try to gain knowledge of other cultures and countries; instead, they will judge based on what they see in the media. And unfortunately, the media only associates Pakistan with terrorism and Malala, rather than a vibrant community who is diverse and vastly tolerant, an army that is laying down their lives in North Waziristan to fight a war on terror and a country that despite facing blow upon blow is still persevering. Again, I don't blame PEOPLE for this, but I blame the media. I wish it wasn't that one-sided.

She is amazing and heartbreaking at the same time. She is a child and by far the most incredible human being I've ever known. There are children around the world who complain about going to school while this girl is fighting for her life for an education not just for herself but for everyone! she's so inspiring. her story is touching. and her words are strong. she's one of the best teenagers in this generation. people should learn from her, her courage is amazing.

i just donated. such a courageous child/young woman. I have no words to express the beauty and insight she has. What an inspiration.

I finished her book yesterday evening, and I have never read a more inspiring book, to think that she spoke out since she was 10 and fought all of this struggle, being shot, going into coma and undergoing several surgical procedures. It taught me that if there is wrong being done to u, u mustn't hesitate to speak out and defend yourself, don't take anything for granted and never underestimate your potential to change the world. Thank you for everything you are doing Malala.

That, unfortunately, is absolutely true. That belief is also written upon the Dome of the Rock that has the name of the Noble Sanctuary. Jesus is seen only as a prophet which, if one reads the Gospels, it is quite troubling because He obviously seems to be claiming much more than that. John, if you do a study of the differing branches of Christianity at the time of Muhammad being around the 7th century, I cannot exactly recall which heresy of the time it might have been, but some of the Christians that Muhammad knew might have actually held the belief that Jesus was not divine or seen as being the Son of God. I have read this somewhere but cannot recall where. It is this erroneous view of Christ that carried over into the belief of Islam and so they state that God having a Son would mean that somehow God was lowered to the level of the human family. Maybe it was the Nestorian heresy, but I am not sure. I have heard of some Muslims however, and they are very few, that have a kind of 'agnostic' view of Jesus being the Son of God, meaning, they might 'hope' that what we believe could be true.

The Koran says Christ is not the one but when you write a book 1000 years after the Holy Bible then you can say Christ is not the one. You see the things that are Holy are the things the Bible says is Holy. Example A holy kiss a holy child a holy unction the holy men any land the Ark of the covenant passed over was called holy. John as a Catholic Christian I am taught that it is not for me to judge the writings of any other religion as being holy or not holy at face value. One MUST take into account the era of history in which sacred writings were written as well as the differences in cultural and literary expressions. Even good Jewish and Muslim scholars believe that. Sadly, anyone can impose their own meanings upon ancient texts and misuse them in such a way as to support even a radically political or militarized ideology. I have listened to audio books of the Holy Qur'an (and I say this out of respect, i.e., the Golden Rule) and I have a copy from an Egyptian translator. Now, I am no T.S. Elliot (Lawrence of Arabia), but I read in English some very beautiful prayers in the Qur'an and I choose to respect how they pray. Saint Francis did too when he met with the Sultan Salahadin. I also choose to believe that even if people could be so mistaken in this life about Jesus, His Divine Mercy endures forever, and where humanity cannot find God's Way, God's Way has His own Way of finding humanity.

Alex BAUTISE Oh, so because she is part of a religion that has a partial history of violence she doesn't qualify as an advocate for peace? Christianity has caused as many wars as Islam. I believe to do so you have to pervert the bible. But to me, that means perhaps in order to wage war in the name of Islam, you'd have to pervert Islam too. That's a debate left to muslims. I can tell you this: The only way to prevent such wars is to keep religion and state seperated. The equasion "religion + state = good" has yet to appear in the history books. In part, that combination of religion and state is what Malala fights against. And from what I see from a european point of view, that's something currently going very wrong in the US right now.

The handshake she offered at the end of the video is so humble and sincere, watch her do it with both hands, it's so sweet.

"...When the Talib first came, (the people) thought they were bringing order..." Fast forward 3 years and now America has someone, who is almost certain to become our president, says "I am the law and order candidate"...and "I alone can fix it." And his supporters are swearing that this guy will bring order, deal with problems quickly and restore the country's strength.

Wow, such strength, resilience and articulation at her age is truly awe-inspiring. I don't think there is anyone in their right mind who can refuse to support access to education, it truly is the avenue toward freedom and peace for all. I am so grateful that we are given the opportunity here in the U.S. to get an education, and reminded, saddened and humbled by her story that for many women across the globe this is simply not an option. I support Malala, and I cannot wait to see what she accomplishes in the future. You go girl!

if you look at the dictionary definition of feminism, and the etymology of the word, it refers to a movement in favour of the equality of the sexes. its not females fighting only for females, even the very term 'feminism' was coined by a man. and if some feminists decide to become 'feminazis', that basically means theyre no longer feminists- so they can no longer be associated with those men and women fighting for equality- the real feminists. feminazis having a distorted perception of what feminism should be doesnt change the original meaning of the entire movement.

With a simple google search you will find all the top Islamic scholars and leaders have strongly condemned everything isis, al qaueda etc stand for for the purpose of defending the religion which is being hijacked by these groups with the help of the media. With that being said, it is not the responsibility of Muslims to condemn someone's crimes because they "apparently" share the same religion (in which they dont terrorists are not muslims. Goes strongly against Islamic law). You dont see white people expected to apologise for the evil young kid who murdered 9 Black people in cold blood?

Well done Mr Stewart for brining this child to your show and showing the general public what is happening to poor people. I live in UK and went there for my honeymoon and know how humbled I was by the people for their kindness and hospitality.One day we stopped to see a family tending to their vegetables in the filed near the road and we decided that we will buy fresh vegetables from them. I asked them if we could pick and buy them, they said yes pick them, after I said how much? They turned around to me and said I can have them ! I couldn't do that I said its your living and I can afford them. After much insisting , our driver came over and said they will feel insulted , maybe you should just give something to the kids that were playing near by. So I did , the farmer was happy and I was happy. One evening I went for a walk near the hotel I was sating at and a local man greeted me and I returned the greeting and we started talking about how beautiful the surroundings were, as I bid him goodbye , he turned around and invited us to his home for an evening meal.I was just flabbergasted and humbled again that a complete stranger was asking us to to his home. I will never forget my experiences of Swat valley and its people. They may not have much in a materialtic way but their hearts are so true and loving. I hope that the piece loving people will get piece soon, as I would love to back there again one day.

To be honest, I disagree with her in the point that only education makes you better person, and the best example is her. She lives in Pakistan and yet she is more intelligent than most Americans in her age even though they have developed educational system... It's all about the parents and the home... I believe that her father is the reason that she became like that.... Raising children right and teaching them values while they are young at home rather that following celebrities and video games and fast food .... ARE the proper way to generate healthy and intelligent generation.

Crowmanhunter Honestly I think the best way to be a parent is to be selfless and dedicated to teaching your kid what you know to be right and not being lazy about it. There is no perfect guide to raising children, but you know when something is bad and when something is good, and you can teach them that. They watch you and learn from your example, so if you tell them to do or not to do things and you fail to follow your own advice, they will also. As long as you show them love and commitment for them, they will honor your teachings and adopt your self discipline.

Math and science is mandatory in a big encompass of a hierarchy to drive forth an evolving civilization, so please don't just nonchalantly say that education is JUST math and science.

It's disgusting how we live in a world where most people in America are spoiled. People skip class just because it's "boring" and they "want to have fun." Well, being a hobo is fun too. You pee in different places. -_- It's unfortunate how people given the opportunity of education loathe it. However, people such as Malala, who aren't given the chance, _risk their life_ for an education. Even though the thought of school may sound revolting, the idea behind it is a miracle.

Mashaba Kabir I understand that education is important, and desperately needed. I think the reason why kids in America don't want to go to school, though, is because the system is awful- there are giant gaps in knowledge, sports in most states get almost all of the funding, teachers are underpaid and overworked, and the curriculum (set by education boards) is awful. Did you know that in over half of U.S. states, schools are not legally required to provide sex ed- and in about half of those, sex ed is not required to be medically accurate, or to cover more than abstinence? That's not to mention the awful pressures- it's incredibly difficult for people to get into college these days. 20 years ago, good grades was enough. Now you need good grades, a job, community service... It goes on and on. Teachers assign hours of homework and don't seem to realize that students have other classes, forcing their students to do the homework and skip sleep or skip the homework and fail the class. Students are taught useless things, told they need A and B for college, when really they need C and D. In the UK and in almost every other place in the world, almost every student takes a gap year after finishing high school before university. Here, kids are branded 'lazy' if they don't sign up for fall semester classes- over 80 percent of the seniors in my school were going to fall classes, and dozens of them had signed up for summer classes as close as three days after school ended- some simply because their parents had been pressuring them to start college and get a job. Oh, and right- on top of all the other pressures, kids are also expected to have at least one job (risking being called a freeloader if they don't.) Students these days are often running on minimal sleep- sometimes as little as 2 hours (Once I heard a classmate say she hadn't slept since a 2 hour nap on Sunday.. It was Tuesday.) I myself have an anxiety disorder. Fun fact- panic attacks last 15 minutes- longer than that and you're having multiples. On a regular basis, before I got on meds, I used to have frequent (at least once a day) panic attack marathons lasting almost an hour because I kept getting sucked back into the attack. What caused the panic attacks? School. I wish I was exaggerating. It's not laziness- the American education system is fucked and kids are snapping under the pressure.

Lizza C I get your point, and it is a good one, but i think that what mashaba is trying to get at here is that some kids, (not necessarily the ones under pressure they can't handle) have everything they need and view school as a chore and a bore, and would rather "have fun and be young". im not saying that it isnt important to have fun and time for yourself, which is healthy, im talking about the kids who do away with school completely with no other reason except that they feel like it. they're in a different mindset than ppl who want an education and deserve, and tbh it's kind of degrading.

Queen🙌. So unbelievably humble and kind to everyone, even to those who have made her life hard, she still hoped education for their children!

I've seen jon Stewart unable to hold back laughter, but I don't think I've ever seen a guest bring him to tears on camera. That's power...

UFCMania98 is obsessing about the drone strikes and trying to insert his outrage about it into a discussion about another issue of equal or greater importance to Malala, which is education in Pakistan. But his tunnel vision about drone strikes is distracting from a discussion about Malala's primary issue of concern - education - when she's already done more to effect the drone strike issue than he has or will ever do - she confronted President Obama about drone strikes personally: politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2013/10/11/obamas-meet-with-malala/ So, +UFCMania98, Malala is on your side on the issue of drone strikes. Now, show her some respect and assume that since the Malala Fund is about education and not drone strikes, she's more concerned about education in her country than drone strikes. Learn to compartmentalize, and recognize that what you're most concerned about is not the ONLY problem in the world, and then you won't inadvertently do (slight) harm to someone who is on your side.

For real, this made me cry like a baby. She is such an inspiration for me now and has changed my life forever. Thank you so much Malala!

I honestly don't feel that she is what the world needs more of, I feel the world should be more like her. We don't need more individual people being peaceful and educated, we need EVERYONE to be peaceful and educated.

Robert Glover If you know what "feminism" actually means and not one of its many popular misunderstandings, you will know that Malala is undeniably a feminist--fighting for the equal treatment of women. Don't confuse the actions or words of certain feminists with the definition of the word itself. Feminism strives for EQUALITY by focusing on issues that affect exclusively women, or women more than men. It's not intrinsically misandry or some extremist ideology. Read a book, man.

Payz hayz You sound ignorant. Compromising and comparing one persons suffering to another persons suffering to see which one has it worse is pointless. That's like me saying "oh some people have cancer buuuuuuutt other people in other countries are starving soooo we should pay no attention to the people with dying illness and just help the starving people bc they have it "worse". Truth4U Apartheid? Do you know what an apartheid system is? Explain how India functions off of an apartheid system? Because there's a difference between institutional racism, discrimination, apartheid, and caste system. I know these terms appear interchangeable, but politically you face different problem with each term. So explain 21st century Indian Apartheid. And then tell me how people in two neighbouring countries with common history, and cultural influences can view the universal issue of poor education and gender inequality as only domestic issues.
