The Daily Greg Consumer Alert: MayTag 4000 Series Washer

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

2/22/13: This washer has now been featured in a popular HARLEM SHAKE VIDEO -
• Video
Purchased in November 2011, not even 6 months after purchase the MayTag 4000 Series Front Load Washer's bearing went bad making the machine sound like an airplane taking off. Warning to those that do not have an extended warranty - Maytag will make you pay for this known problem with this washer if you don't have the extended warranty and the costs for repair of this issue is over $1,700.00 dollars! You limited warranty expires after one year. I have read stories where this problem occurs ever six to twelve months with this unit meaning you either work to get a refund (difficult), buy the extended warranty or cut your losses and trash this hunk of metal.

I complained to Maytag about this two months ago and they "said" they extended my warranty an additional year. Yesterday I received a notification that I need to renew my warranty by the end of June or "may" likely be responsible for repairs after the warranty expires in November (my original 1 year anniversary of the date of purchase). I may just contact a famous class action law firm as I believe there is a case. BUYER BEWARE!

I think it's safe to say that Maytag today is not like Maytag in the past. That's what I heard from everyone. I heard Maytag is made made by Whirlpool? and Whirlpool is made by Kenmore? and Kenmore is made by Frigidaire? and the list goes on and on....that's the problem with these washers nowadays...cross products...I still have my old old old Kenmore that was purchased approx 10 yrs ago at Sears...still working like a charm..used to use it daily...washing towels for my wife nails salon...never had to have it service or anything..I dont use it anymore bcz it smells so bad...but i still save it in the garage bcz it has a sentimental value to me..i bought a front load Maytag a month ago...exchanged it one week after purchase bcz it was shaking, vibrating and making loud noise on final spin cycle..got another Maytag, one model up...and guess what? same problem..will contact RC Willey and Maytag on Monday...will probally return the p.o.s! will look for a top load! fuck these front loaders..they are all piece of shits.

100% Agreed. I just bought a $350.00 Repair and 1 year extended warranty from Maytag for my Maytag 4000 Series Washer MHWE400WW01 to fix what is certainly a bearing and seal issue. Maytag booked the first repair shop for today and they did not show up or return my call as they promised (BBB shows them with an F rating - nice). Called back Maytag and they semi-coordinated another certified repair shop out of Brooklyn (Also an F on BBB and a 1.2 on Yelp). incredibly sad for what should be Maytag dependability. If I didn't have a back injury and the constraints of recent surgery, I'd fix it myself for $25 in parts and a couple of hours well spent. This is unacceptable MAYTAG!!!!!

Disappointed !

I am having the same Issues! Purchased in December 2011. Noises, shaking and rattling started approximately 2 months after purchase. I kept telling my husband this is NOT normal. This NEW machine should not be doing this. I started a load this morning. I could not take it anymore (banging). I decided to check out reviews on the internet. OMG! I did not initially research because it was MAYTAG - dependable. I'm calling customer service tomorrow. Warranty expires Dec 2012. Thank you ALL !

I am seriously considering a class action lawsuit. They are now pushing us to renew our annual maintenance agreement just for the washer but yet have not received one for the dryer. I know a great firm based in Alabama (Beasley Allen) and I may just reach out to them. I called Maytag and they extended my warranty out another year (or do they said) and now I am getting notifications that says that my warranty is about to expire. Crazy! Never again will I buy they products after this!!

I wish I saw your video before I got mine! I was 2 days pass manufacturers warranty and forced to buy an extended warranty. Turns out the repair cost is greater than the cost of the washer so I declined the repair and opted for a $500 replacement voucher from sears but is still in a frustrating process. I wrote Maytag just now hoping they do the right thing since I think it was falling apart even before that day but I just didn't see it. I put a video up about it also hoping it may help others.

Ours did this just over a year after purchase. Same story as the rest...repair is so much I just have to replace. I know that with anything you purchase, there can be problems, but if so many are having the same problem, it has to be a defect. Because Maytag will not remedy the problem, I will not be purchasing products of theirs again.

This sounds EXACTLY like our washer. I came online looking for information on this model as it's so loud we can't be home when it's running. Thank goodness we purchased the 4-year extended warranty! We bought the washer in December 2011 and it's been getting progressively, noticeably worse since the end of last summer.

This is why I bought a 4 year warranty with my new set. My old set was a nice front loading set, but we moved across country and paid movers to do all of the packing/moving for us. I used my whirlpool set 2 days before the move, no problem. I get my set, the first time I use it...it sounds like a plane taking off in my house. We had no proof it wasn't doing it before the move. Thankfully I just got a new set. From now on, I will video record to prove all appliance work properly.

Not exactly sure what's wrong with your, but my was knocking too. I'm a DIY guy, so I decided to open the back panel. I realized that the exhaust tube that lets air out when the washer is spinning had unhook itself. So as the washer is spinning, the exhaust tube would knock around the inside wall. It's also obvious that the tube would unhook itself when spinning because no support. The exhaust tube needs to be mounted better. I solved my problem using foam tape and a screw. Hopes this help.

Our 4000 series started making noise about 11 months after purchase... it went from making the loud whining noise to eventually knocking like yours. I'm going to have to purchase a new washer, and since ours is a stacked pair.. i'm stuck with either buying an identical unit with extra warranty.. or finding something that looks similar and making my own stacking attachment.

  • @AzRivRat

We purchased the same unit 6 years ago and the F28 code appeared where now we have to replace the central control board and master control board. The cost to replace the CCU was $225.00 and now the master control board cost is $350. I'm upset that we can not find an inexpensive solution to the issue, so have now decided to purchase a top load washing machine considering front load washing machines now have panel board issues if not properly balanced and such. I'm sorry you purchase a defective product, but at least my dryer is still functioning. Now heading to the store to purchase a new top load washing machine. Ugh!!!

pentagas, how much liquid soap are you using with a big load? i've read articles stating you are only supposed to use a "teaspoon" of detergent with these machines... they only use a few gallons of water in their cycles. a 75yr old guy in the appliance business said these problems are occuring because people are using too much soap! the suds get where there not supposed to be and it gets into the bearing housing. it only takes a few washes to rinse the bearings of grease. BAM!

I have the same washer with the same problem. I purchased mine in 2011. in 2013, the bearing went out. I replaced it myself. It was easy but i wasn't going to let Maytag rip me off, since the warranty expired. It worked perfectly until a few weeks ago. The same noise came back and I am going to replace the bearing again. I guess they only last about 2 years. I guess I'll keep doing this until my matching dryer decides to die and then I will replace them both. I stack mine, so replacing just the washer isn't really and option and I can't go back to a top load because I only have space for a stacked washer & dryer in my new house.

Maytag (Whirlpool Corp) was contacted and after many emails, no help offered. Pictures of the bearings were sent showing the bearing seal failed and water ruined the front bearing and the sleeve that holds the bearings was full of rusty goo. Repair estimated at $550 - parts & labor. Home Depot has new units for $800 (although I would not buy Maytag again). I repaired the unit myself - very straightforward and there are a few KZreads that help. The bearings run about $40 with shipping. The bearings are pressed into the rear drum housing - which is a plastic resin - which takes a gentle touch to remove and install. The complete rear drum and bearings runs $365 if you do not want to deal with removal/install of the bearings. I believe that this fix will fail again after two or three years as the bearings/seal if not engineered to provide a long life.

When I called Maytag with my serial number they said they couldn't do anything unless a certified tech said it was a bearing issue. I had read online that one person had theirs covered. We had a tech come out and verify the bearing issue. He called maytag and they shipped the parts for free. We had to pay for the install which was around $300. When I asked maytag to cover the install costs they said that they wouldn't pay for it.

Buy a new Speed Queen. They still build machines for the home user. It's build quality is excellent. In fact for example, their top load washers are all metal both the outer drum and the inner drum. The drum sits and is bolted on a metal frame not hung. The timer and the nobs on the Speed Queen are analog. Unlike you see on those cheap a** washers that cost $800 or more that rip apart when they get off balance and a crappy computer board fails. To get a Speed Queen they are sold at a specialty appliance store locally usually in the area. They cost a little more than the average top load washer, but what I've seen on youtube about other peoples new washers break badly after such a short time/ It is worth it to buy a Speed Queen. If you have to buy used buy a washer built between 1990-2000 Wirlpool Kenmore. That's when the built great top load washer. Now a day Wirlpool/Kenmore have lost their touch. Good luck.

Me and my gf bought this June last year, the bearing has went twice in the first year...it just went again yesterday and I'm out of warranty. I follow all there directions, clean it, use high efficiency detergent and it still goes...wtf, I thought Maytag was supposed to be the best, I should have researched this piece of crap

Hate to say it but Samsung isn't much better, top loaders are exploding and under massive recall, and the front loaders have tub mounts called spiders that the wash tub is attached to, the bearing and seal goes bad in a few short years, water leaks out and eats up the pot metal on the spider dissolving it and tub comes loose from the drive frame, its a real mess look up YT videos on it.

Wow since maytag isn't maytag, but Whirlpool their quality has went down the drain. Sounds like the spider broke. If that is still the same part when it was maytag, but with Whirlpool who knows.

I bought a Speed Queen top loader and LOVE it, its a commercial duty machine made in America in Rippon Wisconson by Allied commercial laundry system. First new washer ive bought in decades, I saw what was in the stores and ran for the nearest speed queen dealer, great factory warranty too. The Speed Queen is built like the old school top loaders and runs like them too - they wash faster better and last much longer than anything else on the market.

YUP! But, you can easily fix it yourself. These are not great machines and not at all designed for heavy loads like blankets and towels. Has nothing to do with the juice you pour in. I have replaced the bearings in mine 3x. Part # W10290562 for Maytag Series 4000 machine, Model #mhwe400ww01 Fix it yourself for under $70. God knows there are plenty of DIY videos on here about it. But yeah, garbage
