As a former ride operator on Mission: Bermuda Triangle (I still have my uniform!), I'm deeply grateful to you for producing such a fond look back at this attraction. I worked there in 1993 and have a lot of great memories. I hold the dubious distinction of having once surfed the boarding ramps as they raised and lowered back into place, all while watching (and feeling) the cabin bounce around below. Totally stupid and dangerous, but I was young and bullet-proof back then. Good times. Thanks again - it was great to see some of the ride footage once more!

Surprised you didn’t mention the Polar Express holiday overlay! I grew up around Orlando and remember that version of the ride way more fondly than Wild Arctic. Wild Arctic! That takes me back. I rode it a number of times in the San Diego park in the early 2000s. As a kid it was entertaining enough, especially since it was the park's only thrill ride at the time, but it was pretty tame. It was already feeling a little dated at the time, I can't believe it lasted until 2020!

I worked on this ride at Sea World Orlando Fall 1994 - January 1995. The very end where they are bobbing on the surface was the most common point where people threw up. We knew that it would be closing 'soon' to be converted into Wild Artic. As to the lines, keep in mind that it was pretty much the only ride at the time. Typically it was busiest after the neighboring stadium let out after each of its shows.

I remember riding the Wild Arctic one when I was a kid! It also spawned one of my nightmares, because we got on it shortly before closing... so when the big operators realized it was still on, they had the ride operators shut it down mid-ride, and my mom & I had to walk through a dark, entirely empty Sea World. I still loved it, to be fair. I will just never have another reason to tell that story.

Growing up in the 90s, the Bermuda Triangle seemed like an oddly popular topic, and then one day everyone just no longer cared about it lol. Still would have loved to try out the ride. Another attraction I would love to see covered one day is Rhythm & Hues' Seafari/Sea Odyssey that operated at a bunch of parks, including PortAventura. Of all of the simulator attractions that came out of the boom in the 90s (when people though simulators were poised to replace roller coasters), Seafari looked like one of the coolest ones.

Funny enough, given your username, I think the rise of GPS was part of why the Bermuda Triangle stopped being a common "mystery". Once you can track every ship or plane within a few meters from space, it really kills the idea that somehow a bunch of people are going missing without explanation in one particular region of the Atlantic.

Wild Arctic was seriously one of the best attractions that any amusement park has ever created. I remember experiencing this when I was like 8 or 9 and my mind was just so thoroughly blown. I could have sworn we were really somewhere in the arctic after you get off the simulator and head out into the arctic animal enclosures. I'm 36 now and it's still one of the few non rollercoasters that I vividly remember, I even remember feeling scared because I didn't know how we would get back to the park in Florida. Whoever came up with the full idea of mixing the simulator and the after ride experience deserves a huge raise.

The presenter in the orange coat was a local San Diego newscaster named Loren Nancarrow, who was beloved and passed away about 10 years ago or so. It was a pleasure seeing him randomly pop up here again. I fondly remember Mission Bermuda Triangle and always preferred it to Wild Arctic, except the exhibits after Wild Arctic were great and better than the ride portion.

Clarifying the state of empire of the penguin, Empire of the Penguin's queue line and pre-shows are still around, and the entire ride seems to be completely intact. To get to the penguins, you use the pre-show and queues for the original ride, but you bypass it using this other pre-show room after queueing. Everything seems to be how it was, and it really sucks since it's genuinely a good ride.

I remember going on Mission: Bermuda Triangle during my first visit to Sea World San Diego back in 1994. It was my first simulator and I wasn't too into thrill rides back then, so naturally I was scared throughout most of the ride. I do remember loving the end though (not because the ride was over but I found seeing the helicopter coming to retrieve the sub to be pretty cool for some reason). Sadly, I went a few weeks after the ride closed in 1997 and never did return to ride Wild Artic. I would return to Sea World San Diego on June 24, 2021 and I was able to walk through the old pre-show room and past the exit corridors on my way to the Wild Artic animal exhibit.

The San Diego location is what I remembered back in 1994. My hometown. I was in the second grade at the time and I rode it with my dad. I was terrified of it because other than the shaking and jerking I felt, it was also the impression water was leaking from the ceiling of the sub. Water sprayed out from the top.

Between Questor, Akbar's Adventure Tours, and Mission: Bermuda Triangle, the Anheuser-Busch years of SeaWorld and Busch Gardens may have had the most bizarrely fascinating simulator rides in any theme park chain. I've been so curious about Bermuda Triangle ever since I discovered it through a SeaWorld commercial on KZread about a decade ago, but apart from recorded footage of the ride film, I couldn't really find much info about it at the time. Great to finally see some documentation on the ride's history alongside Wild Arctic, a sim ride I definitely rode and enjoyed Sidenote, have I mentioned I love simulator rides?

I saw Loren Nancarrow, a San Diego local TV newscaster doing a blurb. At the time, he would have been working for the CBS affiliate. Simulators weren't my thing. San Diego's ride had a motionless option. My niece and I did that. Saw the animals. A new Wild Arctic is going up with a coaster track. Funny thing is the Penguin encounter is right next to it. Two polar themed attractions; three is you count Emperor which isn't as close.

It wouldn't surprise me if SeaWorld Orlando builds yet another rollercoaster in this area. They've been adding coasters like crazy to the park in preparation of losing the Orca Encounter over time I think, and because to keep competing with the parks around them they have to do the one thing that has always worked. SeaWorld does have an incredible team for attractions most of the time, with some very beautifully designed theming, even if it's not always a storytelling theme. If I had to suggest something to go in this area based on what SeaWorld has right now in this park, another type of motion-simulator more along the lines of Walt Disney World's Soarin attraction in Epcot could be the way to go. The Wild Arctic area borders the Sesame Street kiddie area they've put a lot of work into in the last few years, so while they could attempt to get away with another coaster-type attraction, I think keeping the scale in mind would be better. Plus, it would keep that area of the park very kid and family friendly attraction-wise. They could certainly do something all-inclusive for the park instead of just the artic theming too. I think it would actually add something to their attraction lineup. But knowing SeaWorld Entertainment right now, god only knows if they'll decide SeaWorld Orlando needs its own Tigris...

You had this ride experience but it had real footage which made it educational in as least as much as you were really seeing that part of the ocean. I know if we'd gone to the park after it was built, my brother and sister would have loved it. I do remember the Arctic exhibit being announced and I don't think I put together that there was the ride attached.

Pretty sure I rode it but I remember nothing about it at all and had completely forgotten about it till you published this video. I seem to recall that it was promoted heavily on TV in Southern California and at the time I thought it was weird that SeaWorld was getting a "thrill" ride. Welcome back! Always love to see the subscription light for your channel light up!

I rode Mission: Bermuda Triangle as a kid back in October 1993 and loved it. I was a huge fan of motion simulators back then like Star Tours, Back to the Future, Questor and for some reason Space Race at the CN Tower in Toronto

Seems like this was a pretty unique ride, for example this might be one of the only theme park attractions where the riders are explicitly told they’re all going to die….!

Man how can I forget the Bermuda Triangle? First Seaworld visit in '92 it was the highlight of the trip. Wild Arctic was a also a good ride but the authentic Arctic base and animal exhibit made up for that and overall better attraction than BT.

At SeaWorld San Diego they included some Mission Bermuda Triangle posters and props in the speakeasy inside one of the haunted houses, which was a cool throwback! Also I loved riding Wild Arctic as a kid, it was my favorite ride in the whole park! I'm still sad they just gave up on these simulator rides and unceremoniously closed them at all their parks, considering they now have zero indoor rides in the entire chain. Especially in Orlando and Tampa where it rains all the time... the ride buildings are just sitting there unused aside from the occasional HOS house. They ought to replace it with something similar using updated ride technology.

Bermuda Triangle and Body Wars both made me fear for my life in the 90s lol. Those 80s/early 90s simulators REALLY wanted children to think they might actually, truly perish on a theme park ride

great video! while hardly comparable in terms of scale, atlantis marine world out on long island in NY has a submarine simulator ride that i always loved. it has three or four long beach seats, no restraints whatsoever, and was so popular with kids many of them (including myself back then) would let folks go ahead of them, just to get to the front of the line for the next ride - all to sit in the front row! i learned to appreciate the back, however, as the last row offered the roughest ride and i loved getting thrashed around. the ride's plot is almost exactly the same as mission: bermuda triangle's, only you're exploring one shipwreck and the jumpscares were the skeletons of dead sailors... and sharks. it probably runs about seven minutes or so. for the life of me i can't remember the name of it [maybe shuttle or something with astro in the name?] but one year a local carnival had a huge space shuttle shaped and themed simulator ride. i remember it having seats but no restraints, perhaps only loose seatbelts at best, but man. that thing threw us around. i was already significantly mobility impaired but hadn't yet gotten my wheelchair at that point and, after riding the gravitron, i figured a low-impact simulator ride wouldn't be such a bad way to decompress. i was so wrong. having not seen the ride run prior to boarding, i chose a seat at the front, thinking it was similar to the submarine at atlantis marine world. nope! the shuttle angled upwards, elevating the front third of the ride pretty damn high, and making everyone at the back freak out thinking they were going to tip out of their seats backwards. the folks in the middle had the most tame ride, which makes sense given the design. needless to say my friends brought me some sun tea and zeppoles to make me feel better when i had to lay on the ground as soon as we exited the ride. great video! thanks for the memories. i don't know if the submarine simulator is worthy of a whole video/if it's even in other aquariums, but i recommend looking it up just for fun.

I've ridden Wild Arctic at both Orlando (vacation and summer camps) and San Diego (vacation). I rode Mission: Bermuda Triangle at the former Cleveland park while it was under Six Flags (Early 2000's). I've also been to the Cleveland park when I was little when it was owned by SeaWorld. Also done summer camps at San Antonio as well. I've been to all four (three) parks in my life.

I went to Seaworld as a teenager, having been on several simulators in other parks before--I was firmly of the opinion that I had gotten over motion sickness on theme park rides. Even the more disorenting ones don't really bother me. But Wild Arctic, something about this damn ride, made me feel like I was gonna throw up after I got off. It was a miserable time. The exhibit was cool though! Good place to walk around and get my bearings.

That was great and I had no idea of this ride. Looked fun! However, although you didn't actually say this but implied it, Star Tours was NOT the first simulator ride. This was Tour of the Universe, and was located at the base of the CN Tower in Toronto. It opened in 1986 and was developed by Douglas Trumball using his ShowScan system. The same system was later used for Star Tours, which opened the next year.

Love your content! So at one point there’s the tall blonde dude standing on ocean bluffs. I live in orlando now but used to live in San Diego (God I miss that weather lol). Anyway, I immediately recognized that guy. Lauren Nancarrow who was and maybe still is with local cbs news in San Diego. The bluffs he’s at I recognized as Cabrillo National Monument. Looking at another video on the history, it also shows him at a lighthouse which is also at that monument. A beautiful location btw w awesome views of downtown San Diego and the bay as well as the ocean. The other spot in that other doc I saw him in was on a ship and yup credits showed maritime museum. That was very likely the Star of India ship on San Diego bay on the same street as the airport. It actually is part of a ship museum (a sub and other ships as I recall) that anyone can buy a ticket and go onto. They all have long unique histories there. I had actually forgotten that there was this ride prior to wild arctic! Thanks for a great video (again)!
