The History of The Weird Construction Theme Park: Diggerland | Expedition Extinct

Ойын-сауық

Join us on a new Expedition Extinct as we look at the weird history of the construction-based theme park - Diggerland. Here kids anyone can operate full-size excavators and diggers. With multiple locations around the world, 2021 saw the first of the Diggerland Parks go extinct.

Georgia Cyclone at Six Flags over Georgia. I remember it was one of my favorite roller coasters and I used to ride it for hours when i was little and not tall enough for the other coasters. It was my favorite ride at that time and I marathoned it for hours every visit. I made so many memories from riding with my parents. Also I have many memories from riding Scream Machine Backwards also at Six Flags Over Georgia. It was a quiet day and all of my family were on the train. It was rough but we all had a fun time.

I suppose a plus side of closing down a Diggerland vs a normal theme park is that they can just drive the rides away, and put them back to use in construction.

Something I-ve heard before is that kids like to be taken seriously (by that i mean to be treated like adults) and when they are taken seriously, they usually behave much better. That may have something to do with their safety record.

@@ixcutamp8059 that’s one reason why adventure playgrounds are better, and can even be safer then the “safe” playgrounds. As someone who grew up driving heavy equipment on my grandparents' farm I can see why the park has been such a success, and why its safe. That equipment is dangerous but it's really easy to limit that danger, especially for the operator. I can remember one time I had a load high in the bucket on a skidsteer and managed to flip it forward... well besides knocking me around and scaring the shit out of me it didn't hurt me or the machine and being that it caught itself with the hydraulic arm I just pushed it back upright and scooped back up the load that spilled. God that shit is fun!

I never realized I had my own personal theme park as a kid. I just thought my parents and grandparents were making me work on the farm. My personal favorite was the auger ride, where you stand on the three point hitch to act as extra ballast while your dad digs post holes. Make sure to keep your arms inside the ride at all times, lest the auger rip them off.

I took my daughter to Diggerland in Kent nearly 10 years ago. She loved it! She drove a car for the first time there (an ex-police car, no less) and chauffeured me around in a massive tractor. We had dumper races too! The Spindizzy is ace. Alex got massive brownie points at school for operating heavy plant (she had pictures to prove it), and she looked at the vehicles in use when more houses were being built at the end of the road in a completely different light.

There's a full size one in Las vegas if you make it out. I believe it started with the 2008 market crash. One construction had leases on loads of heavy equipment and a massive lot if dirt that suddenly had no construction contract. The owner opened it to the public instead, kept some employees on to teach customers to operate the machines and let them go out and have fun in bulldozers and other large machines. Successful enough that it seems they moved and kept it going.

It's an idea that is genius, incredibly British and massively eccentric all at the same time - it's one of those things that seems so obvious with hindsight. I had my 8th birthday at Diggerland Yorkshire back in 2008. Those were the good times, I’m glad to have been a 2000s kid.

Still going in Castleford West Yorkshire and a great day out. It really is a unique experience. Several years ago they sponsored the rugby league team and you could get the chance to watch the game from a heightened posting in the bucket of a digger. Hope it continues in future.

Wow. I just found this channel and this video came up on my recommendation feed! I went there last fall with my child and it was really cool! They were having a fall fest and the weather was cooler. Hardly any lines, everyone was super friendly, and my kid went wild with happiness. Very expensive, but definitely a wonderful experience for a kid who is obsessed with construction vehicles.

I love how much shinier and glossier the American Diggerland is compared to the UK parks XD

Have you seen all the Diggerlands in the UK that have been opened since the early 2000s? It's like Diggerland USA has only been open for a few years. XD. Logic.

Honestly I won’t lie this looks like a blast. I got to use a JCB 100C-I at my old city job when I was around 20. I mainly drove it around the equipment yard after construction work when it was turned in and it was something else for sure! Would love to try this out!

Awesome view of the park. The one in NJ has an indoor water park next door and always curious at this place. They also had equipment at the Philly auto show so cool to see what its like. Great video

This looks so marvelous. There's a place (I think in Texas?) where you can pay a few hundred bucks to run a piece of heavy equipment for a few hours. And even with that, it sounds tempting. This sounds way better. Hopefully they don't go extinct, I'd love to go there.

There needs to be more offroading parks for trucks and suvs in my opinion. They'll bring in a lot of money over time and increase revenue to the local area

You do love your puns! :-) Thank you for this video. I never quite knew what to make of this park chain. But now it's much clearer. When I was a child, my parents would take me to the local county fair each year where there were many displays of farming equipment that you could sit in. None of them worked, but it was a thrill just to be at those controls. I would have loved the chance to operate that equipment. I too hope Diggerland survives.

Can you do a expedition theme park on the Gulliver parks in the Uk? I feel like they more to them than meets the eye, like old tracks at Milton Keynes, the wooden coaster Antelope at Warrington. The ONLY wooden coaster in ANY of the parks. I also remember seeing some modal the log ride at Matlock bath with a year in the 80s I think. I think it would be really interesting to look into the background of that.
