I wish other writers would “get” her, in the little I read of West Coast Avengers she just came off as “female Deadpool” but in her own title she was clearly a genuinely unique character. But yeah, I’ll get around to finishing it. Loved the art too, reminds me somewhat of Amanda Conner’s art (she did runs of Power Girl and Harley Quinn) in feeling somewhat anime/manga inspired without feeling derivative of any particular one.

The thing about One Piece for me is that the length has this weird binary, its so daunting to see the amount of chapters when you first start but when you get up to particular parts, depending on who you are (arlong park, alabasta, waters 7), the length actually becomes something you are extremely excited for. Youll find yourself wishing it never ends as you want to continue this journey with the characters for as long as you can. (Also, as a 25 year old man that has been watching one piece for over 12 years I have never cried more watching a show, oda really knows how to tug on the heartstrings, whether its happy or sad).

One Piece is how you do a long running story. So many long manga (and american comics) get bogged down with complex lore and stuff that requires you to have an extensive knowledge outside of the thing your reading! But One Piece keeps it simple and easy to follow, making it easy to jump in and start reading without pressure or confusion. More manga and comics should take note.

Though to an extent it is true: while One Piece has large scale long term world building and plot developments, it couches them in shorter arcs that can be mostly enjoyed and understood on their own. But I'd say the main difference is that One Piece feels meticulously planned and cohesive as it slowly unravels, whereas western comics are...retconned messes of convoluted inconsistencies.

@@projekttaku1 Thats why you see fans of American cape comics refer to runs of one individual writer Within a series so often. Too many people in the kitchen to be a really compelling whole. @@sadlytemporary4143 yeah. Most manga have 1 writer and artist. And while I understand a writer can't stay on a book forever, they get switched out so often its actually crazy. The writers never get to finish a arc or develop the characters in some way because they simply don't have the time. However, invincible is an american comic that side steps this all together, being a linear series with the same writer and artist throughout, with its story being completed.

One big advantage that Jump+ has over Jump Classic is the infinite size of Jump+ means that they don't really need to run the calculus of "will this series do better than any of these up and comers that are waiting in the wings that we can give the pagecount to instead." There's no need to judge Jump+ series relative to one another. As long as a series can pull in enough money to justify its continued production costs it makes financial sense for them to just keep publishing as many series as they can get their hands on.

But I think One Piece has simply just reached it's "peak" in terms of sheer audience size. Most people who would actually care about One Piece are already into the show, and the rest struggle to get into it because of the length. 30 mins and taking a year to read all of One Piece challenge accepted. Day 1: I managed to finish Ch 1. Though I wasn't fully invested in reading while I was on break, hopefully tomorrow I'll be able to make much more progress. It's honestly interesting how much Oda foreshadows in just that first chapter from Shanks using Conqueror's Haki on the sea serpent, to Luffy's naming scheme for his moves. It'll be interesting seeing how things go with my fragmentary knowledge of One Piece. Day 2: Managed to make it to the start of chapter 6 today, I love how simple it yet impactful Oda utilizes a glare. Day 3: Made it to chapter 12 today, so definitely keeping the same pace as yesterday. I really love Luffy almost infectious optimism, and reached the introduction to the infamous Buggy. Day 4: Made it to the start of Chapter 18 today, and honestly it's been a minute since I've read such an optimistic manga, feels fantastic. Honestly wish I could read more than 30 mins but the challenge stands as such, but I should be caught up by day 200 at best if I continue reading at this pace. Day 5: Made it to Ch. 23 witness the sweet defeat of Buggy, and gotta say I really hate the way he blames Shanks for his own foolishness, and a bit of a weird info dump with Gaimon and his small island. Day 6: Only read a bit today Usopp's introduction up to the reveal of the scheme so mid way through 25 I think. Day 7: Picked up the slack from yesterday and made it to Ch. 32 I really like the immediate contrast of going from the Buggy's design of a rather flamboyant pirate crew to the dark and blood thirsty Neko Crew. Though Luffy did just stomp all of them thanks to Jango's hypnotism. Day 8: Damn it's already been a full week and I'm at ch 40, the fights and characters have been incredible so far, honestly I kinda put off One Piece for a while probably cause of the 4 Kids version, and I regret doing that. Also as much as it seems Haki wasn't planned you can still see seedlings of inspiration for like Luffy being able to keep up with Kuro's attacks. Day 9: Made it to the start of ch 46 today with Usopp joining the crew as their sharpshooter, and now Luffy's year of customer service torture has begun. Also it might just be the fact that I'm a Yakuza fanboy, but I kinda just imagine a Yakuza introduction card for every Marine. Day 10: Man I'm know Oda slides in some real world people, but I wonder if he meant for Mihawk to oozes Koji Igarashi style, also on Ch 51 now with Nami stealing away with the Going Merry leaving Luffy and the rest to fight in the wreckage. Day 11: On to Ch 56 and man I love Sanji's fighting just devastating maul kicks should probably look up some of the fights to watch them in motion but the impact of the hit is still there. Day 12: Man Sef and Sanji's days on the island was heart breaking, and following that up with Ging begging for Sanji's life and finally the best down of Creek but we're onto Ch 63 now. Day 13: Damn Creek just didn't wanna stay down honestly thought the fight wasn't gonna last as long as it did, but we're onto Ch 68. Day 14: On to Arlong Park with the start of ch 73 honestly can't wait to see this dude go down. Though I find the billion belli deal to be a bit foolish of Nami like she should know this man is a ruthless pirate. Day 15: Ch 78 started god it's going to be rough getting through some of Nami's backstory, but boy do I wanna see Arlong go down. Day 16: Made it to Ch 86 god damn is it great seeing the Merman get the shit kicked out of them, by such a rag tag group. Day 17: I never expected One Piece to be so bloody, Zoro just running around with a cut that nearly bisected him, and my dude still wrecking face. Oh and I'm onto chapter 91 where almost a tenth of the way there. Day 18: On to chapter 97 and if memory serves should be seeing the return of Buggy's crew along with Smoker. Day 19: Only got to Ch. 99 I had a major headache today, but hey almost at the big 100 plus return of some old faces, and some new ones like Smoker, and the sergeant that wants to reclaim the best swords (I forget her name I know she's playable in PW4) Day 20: we're officially onto the grand line I think maybe it's just the red line my brains a bit fried onwards to Ch 106 Day 21: Been slowly down a bit cause of summer time allergies but we're onto Ch 108 and dealing with Whisky Peaks. Day 22: At the start of Ch 114 I really just wanna storm though the series, but next I'm guessing will be Choppers island as we move towards Alabasta Day 23: Ch 117 and no deer bro but dinosaur though honestly been slowing down cause of life and things. Day 24: Ch 123 been picking the pace back up kinda heart break that Mr. 5 completely derailed the fighting between the giant buddies, but now to enjoy Luffy, Usopp, and......... a duck? Wreck all the faces. Day 25: On Ch. 129 we've cleared through Ms. Golden week, Mr. 3 along with the refight against 5 and Valentine, now off of Little Garden and on our way to Alabasta Day 26: We're onto Ch 134 with Nami sick the group head south running across Wapol and his ravenous appetite even going as far as trying to eat our rubber man's ship and even himself, but we've made it to Drum Island in search of Pika.... I mean a Doctor that's definitely not voiced by Pikachu in the anime. Day 27: Ch 141 Nami is recovering but what's this Sanji and Luffy are obsessed with a evil blue nosed reindeer what a world, and Wapol is back to reclaim his kingdom, Zoro swims through snow, and jacks a man for his jacket is this a fever dream? Day 28~: Might've missed a few day from learning my new job but we just finished Chopper's backstory ending off on Ch 146 with Luffy decking Wapol. Day 29~: Made it to Ch150 love Luffy defending the fake doctors flag with his life, though a bit foolish that he lost Wapol while watching Chopper show off his rumble ball

Tatsuyo Endo for example has been in the manga industry for decades with published one shots going all the way back to 2007. As others said: The age of one piece isn't going to end soon. The reason it isn't on top anymore isn't because less people read or watch it but because other titles get watched/read more because the medium itself is growing. One piece can just not aquire new fans because of its sheer length. Red hood had a very strong start and then it entered its training arc (I’m a massive fan of training arcs in anime, more than most for reference) which was exciting. The location and building promising great things and then suddenly the hard gruelling very unique sounding training regiment that they hyped up turned out to literally just average military training followed by a barely interesting game of basically un altered cops and robbers as the final exam.

Even the initial arc of Red Hood was a bit of a hassle. Rather than just have Velou go “hey I want to go with you and avenge my father figure”, they kept him in the hamlet for another 3-4 chapters. Compare to say, Demon Slayer, where Tanjiro didn’t really waffle after being saved by Giyu and immediately went to get trained and slay demons on the side. Red Hood had a good concept, but yeah execution is just as important - ESPECIALLY for the early chapters.

There's a beautiful ironic poetry in the knowledge that the sun is setting on the reign of One Piece. As the series gets closer and closer to its Endgame, it feels appropriate that a new generation of Shonen Giants are rising to fill the void. One of the main themes of One Piece is older legends of previous generations stepping aside for the future legends of the next generation. Whitebeard and Gold Roger being at peace with death, knowing that people with dreams who seek freedom will always fill the world. And I think Oda, when One Piece does eventually wrap up, will be able to feel a similar pride and peace seeing all the future generations of manga author he inspired who may possibly surpass him.

I find PPPPPP fascinating, the author clearly understand that a manga about music is by definition unsatisfying, it's hard to imagine what the characters are playing, you can't enjoy the music, so they made the story about visualising the music and embraced it entirely. It's very impressionistic, it doesn't explain a lot about how people actually see those "visions", there are no hard rules, it's all about how people feel about the music, it's super clever.

I understand that getting into OP is overwhelming. It took a pandemic for me to find the time and energy to do it. In 2020 I started in April and I think it took me around 4-5 months to get to chapter 900 where I stopped before Wano (and then couldn't stop myself reading on in 2021 even though I wanted to wait until Wano is done lol). That being said: It was SO WORTH IT. Yes, OP is a time commitment, but it is bogus how good this manga has stayed for so long, even considering all valid criticism of the story post time skip.

I really hope that the change in landscape will create better work environments for these artists. After all, the most impressive thing about One Piece's author Oda is not that he's just a better artist or story teller than all these other authors (not as a diss, Oda is crazy talented, but so are the other jump authors) it's that he's probably about the only person alive who can what he does and has been doing for over 25 years. 25 YEARS: One Piece started in 1997, the series is more than 2 times the age of its target demographic. Its insane how Oda has managed to maintain the quality of the series for that long. Its absolute insanity to hold that expectation for every single manga author coming in.

Oda, Araki, and Urasawa are the most crazy talented manga artists in this modern times. All of them are extremely consistent in their work with Oda churning out chapters week after week while maintaining quality character writing, storytelling, and world building; Araki, just like Oda, churning out chapters weekly ever since JJBA Part 1 with NO BREAKS IN BETWEEN until he switched to monthly releases after JJBA Part 5 all the while maintaining his innovative writing style; and then Urasawa producing top-tier unique stories, title by title with most, if not all titles are masterpieces, especially Monster and 20th Century Boys which I absolutely enjoyed reading while having high expectations in mind and it did not disappoint me. (I also heard Pluto was a masterpiece as well)

Right from the beginning I’ve told myself not to expect to reach the end for a very long time, and it’s honestly helped me so much in motivating me to keep reading. I’m already just past chapter 100 and it’s felt like nothing in the story, despite how much I’ve enjoyed it up until now. At the point in my life when I decided I wanted to catch up I decided I was going to just binge it every day, as much as I could, until I was up to date. And now I am up to date, but man, waiting week to week is incredibly hard after I fell so in love with the world and characters of OP. I went back and watched all the movies because I just wanted more time hanging out with those characters. Take it slow, OP is a great and long journey that does not need to be rushed through.

I dont know how your reading style for each chapter, but i suggest you read it with your own pace.. Because every pages of chapter, Oda always put an easter egg in his manga panel (for me, im always spend my time to search my fav character, Pandaman) that maybe irrelevant at that time chapter came out but you found out after many chapter.. Thats why i recommend read it with your own pace.. Right now i always keep reading a new chapter every week but sometimes i will re-read again from chapter 1st until recent chapter.. Gotta say that JJK has kept me hook and coming back week to week for me. As a whole I only started reading manga constantly last year when I decided to finally sit down and read Hajime no Ippo after years of loving the anime. That lead me to reading Berserk, Vagabond, Trigun, Sun Ken Rock, the one punch man manga and many more. I’ve deeply enjoyed this experience and it got me back into a creative mood of drawing and even trying out animation in my free time. I also got to share Watching Naruto with my little sister last year, it was a deeply touching and moving experience. Naruto was a very big part of my childhood. I discovered it when I moved to a new country and was dealing with loneliness myself so those aspects of the story really stuck with me. So being able to rewatch it start to finish with someone I love and them loving it too was a fantastic experience.

I'm rather sad that the next arc is going to be its last, as there's so much that Tabata hasn't explored yet (what happened to the dwarves, what happened to Mars & Ladros after Zenon obliterated the Diamond Kingdom, the last of the Diamond Kingdom's shining generals, etc.), but I suspect that the last arc is going to be a long one.

with what was said about one piece, if anyone still isn't giving one piece a chance. i just started one piece just under a couple weeks back, and I 100% understand the idea that the sheer amount of information makes it difficult but i have managed to find no difficulty in reaching chapter 375 (first chapter of Enies lobby), still being able to recount all the events from romance dawn to water 7. I found it massively helpful to temper my expectations of how long it will take to catch up. It's massively important to pay attention to current events instead of getting too excited about getting to the future arcs, it is an easy enough series to take in without the FOMO of not being caught up. so if anyone still hasn't read one piece try it, or even pick it back up with this in mind. never force yourself to catch up, if you start to struggle reading, its most likely time to put it down so you can take it all in.

I believe Horikoshi when he says My Hero Academia is going to end soon this time. If you've been following, the past year, year and a half of the manga since around chapter 295, of the manga has had an insane lurch forward in pacing. The rapid ticking off of literally every hanging plot thread, and the fact that we've explicitly hit the final major Hero vs Villain battle. My Hero Academia is ending things. I think ending before the next year the way Horikoshi said is optimistic even at this pace. But it's 100% over sometime next year, maybe even fairly early next year.

I couldn't tell you what that was at the time, but I think that opening up of restrictions brought about by online publications, now really coming to fruition with the massive successes of Jump+ in that arena with similarly strange, quirky or grim series, combined with that new audience coming to manga from a completely different perspective and the original audience for a lot of those legacy series getting older and looking for different kinds of stories to supplement more familiar and comfortable material, is as good an explanation as any. It feels like there's a paradigm shift happening right now, and I'm really excited for where that takes us.

Of course, Jump+ is also way more of a crapshoot when it comes to success. With so many more titles allowed onto the platform compared to the print magazine, it's much easier for a title to be overlooked, and barring some exceptions, the greater proliferation of titles in general means that even the successful titles in Jump+ probably won't sell as many volumes as the successful ones in base Shonen Jump.

As a long time One Piece fan, I am not saddened by the fact that One Piece is "declining in sales". One Piece is a manga that will go down into history which not many manga can say about themselves. And frankly I don't believe that all of the manga that are popular now will be remembered for as long as One Piece will, if at all. The trend nowadays is "high action in a short amount of time" but One Piece has never been about that. It has always been about the long term goal, struggle and growth of the characters. That is why I believe that eventghho One Pieces sales per chapter might be dropping, but when it ends it will most likely make the series more approachable (as there isn't more adding on top) and for those that had already loved it for years, me included, will keep its legacy shining like gold in their memories.

I think there will always be long running series, because there will exist stories like One Piece, that require a longer format in order to expand the world lore, and some writers like Oda are just overflowing with creativity. However, keeping a sucessful series running as a mangaka is hard work, and most of the artists from some of the most notorious manga ever written have shivers with the idea of doing it again. So a shorter ,more direct running series would open up possibilities because a LOT more authors would be able to keep up, and there would be many more titles launched on a yearly basis, allowing particularly sucessful authors to transfer, if they wish, to a long running format. This could be a game changer for Jump PS: "What's Bleach"? Oh god...

The thing about One Piece you fail to mention is that it's simply completely saturated its own market. One Piece is so old that there are used copies literally everywhere, its on every public library shelf, the anime is constantly airing, it has become such a household name that it's just like Dragonball. Everybody knows it and can cheaply purchase it through various means other than buying new copies in the store. Demon Slayer will get to the same point as One Piece and DB soon, but eventually it will have reached an equal saturation point. Additionally, Oda's age is showing in a different way: Unlike all of his younger colleagues, he has to take a break every 3 to 4 issues by now to not break down and that basically means a 25% reduced output, leading to 1 volume less over 12 months than his contemporaries.. and in case of OP, one volume easily means 2+ million in sales over a year, maybe even 3. The pandemic and JJK's good placement by the Jump PR department also meant that a lot of the people starved for new content after binging Kimetsu last year could easily switch to Jujutsu in what I can only see as a brilliant form of crosspromotion by the magazine. It seems in recent years Jump has managed to quite successfully pace the adaptations of its potential megahits like JJK, SxF, CSM and soon maybe Dandadan, Sakamoto Days, Mashle and Blue Box in such a way that they can generate mini hypeplosions to really push one title for a year - a strategy that goes well with their emphasis on "shorter" titles in the 150-300 chapter range compared to the 00s tendency of extending everything to 300+ chapters once it gets popular. It remains to be seen if other publishers can mimick this model or if this was just a lucky coincidence fueled by a public stuck at home during the pandemic...

No way in hell does demon slayer reach one piece sales numbers lol also Oda is FORCED to take a break otherwise he would work himself to death. He sleeps 3 hours a night. @@sharebear421 Break down the overall sales in Japan and look at the sales per volume... Demon Slayer has reached something insane like 4+ million sales per tankobon, which puts it in the same tier as DB, Slam Dunk, Fist of the North Star and yes, One Piece. This is de facto the point of complete saturation as such a level of sales combined with an anime usually means that in a population of 120 million every 30th person owns a copy and the others know about it well enough to make an informed purchase decision. Now consider that many people live together and share copies as families, the amount of copies in public libraries, online means of consumption and more... Only very few titles reach that point and I have no doubt Kimetsu will, too. Not so sure about JJK, though. Do not confuse absolute and relative numbers, keep in mind the market cap and you will see that DS's rise is unprecedented and brought upon by a very unlikely set of circumstances: The pandemic and its changes on media consumption, the viral episode 17 of the anime, etc. Of course merely 20 volumes wont reach the absolute numbers of a similary popular series with 100 volumes, but it might eventually reach #1 in relative sales.

"What's Bleach?" Even before he said it I literally knew that was the quote that was going to come out of his mouth given the context of it being an earth shattering sentence stated by a younger college. I knew what the younger college was going to say that because I'm would be that younger college. Like I'm not totally unaware of the older era of manga. That was the sort of stuff I knew existed on TV but I was also too young to be allowed to watch. And as I grew up I went back to see some of those classic series like Naruto. But yeah, there is a lot of stuff from that time that I have no idea about. I only learned what One Piece was like 2 years ago and know even less about Bleach. Literally the only thing I know about that latter series is the name, I couldn't even confidently recognize a Bleach character in a line-up of other manga protagonists. Frankly, I'm a bit intimidated by any manga which names itself after a cleaning agent. For even more reference to how unaware I was about older series, my introduction to Dragon Ball was through Dragon Ball Z Kai. When the series first started airing, I legitimately thought this was an entirely new show. I was like "hey, this is pretty good!" and watched it my friends. It was only during the Android Saga when I tried to look up some episodes online did I learn that DBZ had been a cultural phenomenon for 2 decades prior. I was totally blown away by this discovery, imagine thoroughly enjoying something new only to find out people had already been hardcore fans of that thing for 20 years. And yeah, I also recognize that the landscape of anime must be so different today compared to what it was years ago. I can tell it's different because I'm always hearing jokes from anime vets about how anime is stigmatized and how difficult it was to watch the shows. But when I hear those jokes, I can't really relate to them because anime seems way more mainstream these days. How can there be stigma surrounding it when middle schoolers unapologetically watch and enjoy anime like any other tv show? But I guess that for better or for worse that's what the world of anime and manga looks like today. And for what it's worth, I'm ok with it. We seem to have much better access to quality anime, quality subs, and quality dubs. Anyone can watch the newest anime series if they really want to. And the regression of stigma towards anime means that there ware no social barriers either. Overall, I'm quite happy with the status quo we find ourselves in. The worst thing you can say is that newer series aren't as good as the older ones but even then, new anime fans can still watch those older anime series and in todays streaming world, it's even easier for new to see the older series than it was for the contemporary fans. It really feels like we gained so much more while losing nothing.
