Following the release of Final Fantasy X: Will, there has been a growing expectation that Square Enix should develop Final Fantasy X-3. After all, they elongated the timeline, brought Sin back and introduced new dynamics to characters we already knew.
Square Enix were resistant at first (at least to the public), but in the past few years they have voiced their own interest in creating Final Fantasy X-3... they just lament that there isn't enough time for them to be able to make it.
Within this video, we explore the curious case of Final Fantasy X-3... and discuss whether it's something we will ever see

I want to see the journey that Braska had to go through, how Jecht ended up in Spira, and how Auron died. I know all three dies, who cares? It makes us more attached to the game. Have you played Crisis Core? Everyone knew Zack was going to die, made it that much more meaningful when you beat the game

I liked X-2, but I do remember my guy friends seeing me play, asking wtf I was playing that was so girly. I was in high school at the time. I was momentarily insecure about it. I got over it eventually… the game is great. It’s got a lot of silly and campy stuff going on, but also some of the most emotional and poignant moments I’ve ever played through in a game. One thing I never really accepted though, was how Brother became so flamboyant since the first game. It was so out of left field.

agree. people like to shit on FFX-2 with no valid reason. Just because they're all girls or the story isn't as grandiose as X's doesn't mean that it's not a good game. The female representation, as you said, was really important. It showed that women could be feminine, fashionable, and still kick ass all by themselves. The story, while isn't as earth shattering (it still is tbh), was more complex and introspective than the first. Both games are AMAZING, and are so in their own distinct ways. People expected X-2 to be another X and that's why they've been big mad about it.

Definitely the same for me. Until I've gotten the game, my sister and I didn't even think that there were games that featured female protagonist in a trio, especially one that allowed her to explore the world they lived in further and further their character journey. It brought us both into gaming more and actively looking for more rpgs instead of casually consuming whatever games people gifted us as kids.

@@ryuzen30 I agree with you, most people don't understand that scene. It could be argued that the Voice Actors did a terrible job conveying the scene yes, but to put the blame on Tidus shows most players are not paying attention to what is happening. Tidus was being sad and mopey about life, and was depressed a bit about finding out about Jecht, and being in Spira in general etc.. (At this time he did not know about Yuna's suicide mission) Yuna is trying to cheer Tidus up regardless, Tidus is essentially "forcing a laugh" in a very sarcastic manner. It's supposed to sound forced and unnatural. This is why later on in the game when Tidus finds out the truth about Yuna, he thinks back to this time when Yuna was trying to cheer him up, when she wasn't being sad despite her walking to her death. It was what made Tidus start to grow up because he realized that Yuna was facing her fears while Tidus was being mopey and sad about his. But again, people just don't like the way it sounded, but again that's the Voice Actors faults for being terrible at conveying the scene.

Mechanically X-2 was awesome. The inclusion of jobs and the ability to swap mid battle always gave me a feeling of FF5 and X mixed together. But the story and mostly the atmosphere felt weird. One moment the game tries to be ominous and dark and at the exact next moment a J-pop concert starts and leaves you in confusion. Different strokes for different folks, as they say. I've read a bit what the X-3 novel is and I hope they never touch that thing. Personally, if they want to re-insert X to the modern systems, I'd prefer a remake like 7's with a ton more interactions between the characters.

I think with its financial struggles, FFX-2 was really an attempt to pander towards broader and more mainstream audiences. I mean, I don't know how it is with japan, but in the west already Final Fantasy had the reputation of being all about telling complex, grande and often rather melodramatic stories. I think with them leaning highly into magical girls territory combined with a focus on pandering towards idol fans, they wanted to get a more mainstream audience. We also shouldn't forget that while Final Fantasy is THE JRPG giant in the West, it doesn't has this status on japan and is overshadowed by other franchises like Dragon Quest. Which itself always had much more sex appeal and fanservice compared to Final Fantasy, where the focus was all around heavy and often tragic romance stories since FF7.

I think the Soundtrack was probably among the best things it had going for itself, it was a legitimately great pop-soundtrack. I just think that it was just tonally too far off from FFX. Feel like it could have worked much, much better as its own thing, similarily to how FF15 did. Final Fantas meets Spice Girls is actually a much more fun concept than Final Fantasy meets four dudes on a road trip, it just didn't fit Spira as a setting well.

Part of what also paused the X-3 conversations was the reaction to the Novel and the Radio Drama. They were NOT well received, and were made specifically to invent a false conflict to bring back the story + the main threat from X. Of note is that the world-building done in 2.5 is great, with the war between Zanarkand and Bevelle fleshed out, but the characterizations and the plot devices were ripped out some terrible fanfiction, and clash with the established behaviors of the characters following X-2. The recap of 2.5: Yuna goes back to being in her summoner garb. Tidus makes dick jokes (no kidding, he absolutely does). Time-travel (because Square is obsessed with this now). Tidus DIES to a blitzball disguised as a bomb (no, seriously, it dismembers him) and Yuna faints. Yuna brings Tidus back as a "Beckoned" (dreamlike save-state of someone's memories of a significant other). Yuna is worried that if Tidus ever finds out, he'll disappear forever. The recap of the Radio drama: SIN RETURNS! (no, seriously, Sin is back) Tidus has a gal-pal and Yuna can't handle it (jealousy, seriously?) New summoner and guardian - guy Summoner and girl guardian - are introduced. Tidus and Yuna break up, so do the newbies because guy summoner is in-love with Yuna. Yuna tells Tidus she "already has someone else" anyway. Tidus confronts Lulu about this, and she tells Tidus "he should already know who it is." Radio Drama ends with Yuna giving a speech about fighting Sin, and that people who had "passed on" previously were starting to return to life - hinting that the "other" she spoke about was the "real" Tidus. Yes. These are the story elements that have been gleaned from the translations that are out there. So, no, the stories weren't well received, because they're godawful. If they made X-3, they would have to address these or at least catch the NA audience up on them - which the reaction in the "west" for the translations has not been good at all...

It does seem like a cool concept, but to be honest, I'm not sure it would work too well. In a way, we already know too much about their own journey. The pilgrimage is a road we have already travelled once, doing it a second time, while already aware of most of the twists might not make for a great experience. And any attempt at subverting this (for instance, by adding a new information that might recontextualize the OG game) would be extremely hard to pull in a satisfactory manner (since whatever new reveal would obviously not have been planned in advance). Also, I fear a cast of 3 would be limiting. It was a problem for me in X-2, it would be a problem for me in an hypothetical X-0. And trying to add new companions would beg the question of "why did we never heard about them before?". Even if the game ends up with them dead, simply not mentioning them at all would seem retroactively callous.

I'd very much like an X-3 but I would rather it be a prequel instead, set in pre-Zanarkand's destruction scenario with a brand new cast, unveiling all the big machina cities of Spira (Besaid's always intrigued me!) and secrets untold (maybe Yevonites could've preceded the whole thing and created Yu-Yevon within the cult). It’s not difficult to see how they made that leap of logic with the mechanics centred around collecting and wearing fancy outfits. That is something that western audiences think ‘feminises’ the game. A lot of ‘core’ gamers also got sour at an all-female character roster at the time too. Thankfully, it picked up popularity when people realised how fun and full of sexiness though!

All that for nothing? just so sin can come back? also kills the purpose of X-2 where Yuna went out looking to see if he was still alive :/ All that also for nothing? Why do that to us hardcore fans? It would DESTROY my memories of this game and kill my love for it, I'm in my late 20's and it still holds such a dear spot in my heart so for them to go and just kill their story and the game would ruin a part of my teen years. When I was 12-14 FF X and FFX-2 was my world, I had no friends, no boyfriends, gaming was all I had and I was going through a hard time which this game distracted me.

I unironically love X-2. Part of it’s based on my nostalgia and memories with my brother that I have attached to both of the FFX games, but I also believe Final Fantasy X-2 has the best implementation of the job system in the franchise. Being a huge fan of FFX, my brother got it for Christmas the year it released. But me being a long time fan of the series as a whole I believed part of the magic of each game was that it’s a self-contained story. They all leave you wanting more and FFX was no different. Then X-2 was announced and the tone of it seemed awful so I had planned on just pretending it didn’t exist. I watched my brother play it for a few minutes here and there and I wasn’t impressed until I finally saw a battle and it looked so fluid and fun. Then I finally let him explain the dressphere and garment grid systems to me like he had been trying to do all along and it caused me to finally give it a shot. I spent the next week playing it more than he did and eventually beat it. I barely remember the story and I even played a lot of the cutscenes muted because the dialog was just so bad. Even though I’ve put hundreds of hours into it over the past 20 years, 100%ed it multiple times, and consider it one of my favorite entries in the series I couldn’t go into detail about what actually happens in the game. If anyone here has avoided this game because it’s “girly” I highly recommend you put your preconceptions aside and play it. It’s some of the most fun I’ve ever had with a Final Fantasy game. I feel the same way about XIII and XIII-2 (mostly the latter but I have a soft spot for the original too)

the thing is most ppl didn't pay attention when they played the original ffx. yu yevon was a summoner like everyone when he "created" sin. yu yevon by using the dead as a outer shell to "create" sin he also put his souls into it that's why when you kill yu yevon yuna can send sin away. basicly sin is a living undead summon made of dead ppl any summoner that as the power to summon/manipulate pyreflies can summon him assuming they are powerfull enough. as long as a summoner has the power to summon and shape reality sin can never truly die. you get this info when you talk to the behemoth fayth after you get the ship. but what im going into is pyreflies they have lot to play into the power of summoners to the point that they can almost reshape reality with some limits .and yes i all got that from the original ffx the game just dosent spoon feed you that info you have to dig deeper. pyreflies has 3 properties storing memories/dream of dead/alive "ppl bonding" witch they can created fayths out of and even ppl example tidus. they can bring back the "dead" depending of the person they can keep a humanoid from like auron and some of the yevon that are dead like Grand Maester mika they need a stong ego and no negative energies to stay in the world as a unsend without turning into a fiend. others like seymour and lady yunalasca is a unsend person that had allready a very strong ego and negative energies that's why he can turn into humanoid/fiends whenever they like. also the unsend that turn into mindless fiends usually have a lot of negative energies when they die but there ego is weak. and the 3rd one time travel/creating dimensions but that one property might be dependent on summoner im not 100% sure the first game dosen't have a lot of hints into it but it's there bearly so yeah the audio drama for me actually conformed what i was allready thinking and ill also say that ffx has 3 story going on at the same time but most ppl didn't even noticed one is the devlopement of tidus and yuna and the other one is the ending of the 1000 war of zanakand/bevelle altough i won't get to step into it it's allready too long of a post and the 3rd one is about the summoners users back 1000+ years ago witch caused all the shit that happned but only lightly. im gonna end by saying this for ffx to have a closure it will need to dive into the origin of the pyreflies and summoners only then we will have a true ending.

I love that garment grids and accessories can give you skills and abilities which is something I definitely want to see again. With the x and x-2 HD remaster being my first FF game alongside WOFF, it was a great duology. X has a great story, characters, and pretty good mechanics. My only problems was with the sphere grid due to how easy it was to run out of some spheres and be unable to make progress for a bit and though each character is unique to make them required to make it to the end, it feels like almost all of them have 2 (3 in Riku's case) classes/jobs rapped into one and it kinda falls flat and can be disorderly. X-2 seemed to be a fun alternative with more lighthearted moments, it never felt like it was trying to compare with the first one, allowing it to go on its own path. Granted the garment grid and dresspheres were somewhat a improvement (albeit with their own problems) the battle system was troubling but allowed it to feel more realistic. I as a male never understood the sexualization of the characters and never paid attention because I enjoyed the game. The narrative allowed Yuna to live a life of adventure where everything wasn't so serious and she was actually able to live her life how she wanted. Though the rough relationship between Yuna and Titus is kinda sad, I think it is necessary for them both to grow as individuals and help the story feel real as X, like VI before it, challenged the dynamic up to that point and made changes and gave new life and experiences where sometimes the lovers aren't separated by death but maybe their own individuality that tells them it just might not work. I honestly hope they make a X-3 and I wait in anticipation for what it brings

The problem I had with X-2 wasn't for any real implicit reason. FFX had such a definitive, complete ending that any addition to it felt like betrayal. With FFXV, all the DLC smartly went backwards and served to enhance the conclusion. There was also a noticeable shift in the depiction of FFX's characters in WoF that I didn't really care for. Tidus and Yuna didn't seem like the same characters from FFX (regardless of the multi- dimension shenanigans) and I think that had more to do with fifteen years passing and different writers than any kind of narrative reason. FFX-3 is going to be, inadvertently, a reflection of our own world more so than of Spira because we're unconsciously aware of that change and distracted by it. I'm content with just FFX, but I'd be very, very interested in any spin-off titles that explored other characters besides Tidus and Yuna, or a narrative that didn't try to mess with the original game's conclusion.

X-2 or anything games that continue the story sort of hurt FFX. Bringing Tidus back as much as I love a happy ending sort of makes the ending of FFX meaningless because he can just be resurected etc.. if they wanted to continue the story Tidus shouldn't of been resurrected in X-2 or Yuna could of had to pick continue the eternal calm or bring Tidus back but doing so would also bring Sin back or something like that, X-2 should of been about her moving on same as the rest of spira, that infamous the last jedi quote would fit it well "let the past die kill it if you have to" and only then could spira really thrive

It's because of Enix.. Squaresoft knew how to make legendary games. FFX being their last one. Immediately after the merger with Enix, SquareEnix put out X-2... Some 30 years of tradition. Gone overnight. No FF title had any direct continuity before X2... And youre 100% right. It essentially ruined X's ending. FF7 and FFX will always be a part of me because they had a common theme. Loss. I'll never forget the night I watched Aeris get stabbed by Sephiroth in that scene and I'll never forget Tidus fading away as Yuna and him stood there after beating Sin. And X2 took that away.. (Or attempted to any way) for a quick cash grab... A new company merger saw a quick cash grab by piggybacking of the franchises last giant successful game.... Just draw up some obscure plot line to connect to Spira and ship it out. And every FF since hasn't been the same... FF12, they changed the battle system and haven't ever gone back. FF13-1,2,3 all were shitty stories with a shitty plot with stupid characters in a mostly linear world. And FF15 I haven't played yet but I dont think I want to, which if you knew me; you'd understand how depressing that is.. I have Final Fantasy tattoos on my body, and the love for the franchise is gone. Even this FF7 remake is a giant cash grab.. It sucks that all my love for FF can only exist in the past now.... And it's because of Enix.

I disagree on Final Fantasy 7 no longer being an "obstacle". Remember; Final Fantasy 7 is being released episodically so once the current 1 is finished, they will simply move on to the next piece. As for Kingdom Hearts 3; Technically it is no longer an obstacle but if memory serves, didn't that game recently get a DLC expansion?

TBH I wish FFX-2 didn't exist. FFX was such a well crafted self-contained story with a bittersweet inevitable ending. The message at the end of the game was somewhat lost with FFX-2. Yuna tells the crowd (and the player) that peace time comes with a cost, but survivors who get to enjoy that peace have the responsibility to keep the memories of those we lost alive.

Personally I loved 10-2 as well but I'm not so sure for a 10-3 considering how messy it seems it would be. For example, it wouldn't make sense for Sin to come back at all since Yu Yevon was defeated and assumably sent. The Fayth stopped dreaming, with Tidus being an exception, so it's not like suddenly a powerful summoner could summon and bring back Sin from the collected Fayth on Gagazet. Besides, I'm okay with the happy ending of 10-2 and don't like the idea of 10-3 taking a sad turn again with splitting them up but that's just a personal preference thing. I'd possibly be okay with 10-3 being about Braska's journey but I'm still not too sure about that either. I love 10 as well as 10-2 and am okay with it ending there.

I had a dream once that post X-2, everything was calm. One night, all of a sudden Aeons come down from the sky and start attacking Spira. Valefor, Shiva, all of them. It almost feels like Zanarkand levels of destruction. Then we see the spirits of summoners past including Braska with the Aeons, directing their attacks. The party of Yuna, Rikku and Paine see this in the sky and are very confused. Why are Aeons back? Why would Braska direct them to attack? This leads to a few fights, and then finally a boss fight against Braska and an Aeon which leads to the party losing by default. There would be some dialogue centered around Yuna realizing her father's spirit is corrupted.
