Throughout the story of Final Fantasy X, Tidus and Seymour were at odds with each other. Protagonist vs Antagonist, they squared off on numerous occasions on the surface they couldn't have seemed more different. But after exploring a little deeper, it's weird to see how similar their stories were.
There will be spoilers throughout this video, as this is very much a Final Fantasy X story explanation, so we'll be covering plenty of back story from both of the characters and associated characters like Braska, Jyscal Guado, Auron and Jecht.

    I think a bit more inspection on the life of jecht might be necessary here. Jeckt was a man renowned for his skill at blitzball. As he grew older he was getting slower. He tried to increase his own waning confidence by proclaiming his glory and eventually resumed training like a madman. He was not lying at the time when he said "dont worry my boy. No one else can do it, I'm the best! This is something he not only believed. He HAD to believe it. This is him.saying you can keep trying but dont let it hurt you if you cant. You see his failing isnt that he doesnt know how to be a dad. He just isnt a sensitive man. He had an incredibly sensitive child and parenting one requires and unbelievable amount of personal introspection and the ability to wear many masks. A " I do this all for you mentality must be adopted. He failed to apply this to his child but most certainly maintained his career for both ego and to maintain his families way of life. As he fell to his drinking to ignore his own failings and increasingly difficult time keeping up with those younger than him. He began to fail the emotional needs of both his wife and child. He became abusive and neglectful but his wife knew this was a new side of him. She watched the man she loved crack and fall apart. He was her rock. Potentially she was already mentally unstable and jecht had the uneviable task of being the only rock for both of them. We often have a jaded view as children. Of our parents. Jecht wasnt a failure as a whole. Just a man who only had one path to supporting his family and cracked when that path was becoming less viable. Ego and drive are innately a good thing as long as they dont rule you. He allowed this to happen. Potentially realizing he was consumed by this he eventually set out to train at sea. A time of self reflection and to better himself. And this is when he disappeared. Lost in spira he learned about himself and at one point injured an entirely innocent creature. Dropped the drink entirely,reflected and sacrificed himself for others. What we see is not a bad man. Just a man. One who had to learn through hardships and trials so that he could repent for his failires as he never got the chance to do so for those he loved. He is a hard, rough, and incredibly prideful man. This can be a recipe for success and failure. We see him achieve both. I like jecht because he helped me (though infinitely less the situation tidus had) understand alot about my own father. His distance was a desire to see me catch up. His harshness was a way to show me that adversity can be triumphed over. So many more lessons and revelations came from playing this game as a father myself now. Me and my dad have a fantastic relationship and I can certainly chalk that up to both of us coming to underatand one anothers viewpoints far better than we did in the past. End rant.

    Final Fantasy X is quite a deep game in terms of the themes and issues in its story. Racism and/or childhood trauma are two of the main root causes of many of the problems that characters face in Final Fantasy X. It also shines a light on religious and political corruption. I originally played this game when it first came out- I was still in school and some of my classmates were also playing it at the same time. One of my friends, after seeing how Wakka's attitude towards the Al Bhed changes, made efforts to hang out with and get to know kids who were from different ethnic backgrounds to himself.

    I was the same as well (Got 10 the year it came out on Christmas from my dad! He got it when it released and saved it as a present for me on Christmas because he got me FF9 the christmas the previous year when that came out! so he figured "kid liked this final fantasy game I got him for the PS1, and he said his mom got him a PS2, so why not get him this PS2 game that is of the same name!" I mean he even TOLD me to bring my PS2 with me when I visited and I was shocked he got it for me! I was in middle school at the time, and I saw ads for the game, but this is before I started understanding release dates without needing commercials to tell me! So I was surprised he got it for me! He was actually confused about the box art of Tidus in the water though and thought he bought some J-Pop music by accident he told me, hell even his girlfriend who saw the game after I unwrapped it thought the same LOL) and yeah, I only got the full scope of the story when I bought it again on the Switch cause I was JUST getting into the JRPG game at this point! FF7 was what got me curious (because of the US Commercial! I seriously thought it was an action game LOL) and FF9 was the first RPG I BEAT! FF10 I only got as far as "Yuna Wedding" before some asshole stole my game at school (teach me not to loan shit out) and I couldn't get another copy for a long time that I always regreted never beating this game (that and I'll admit when Square started going away from the Open World with their FF series I was kind of bummed, 12 and 7 Remake fixed that for me along with other games that went down the same similar path like "Tales of Berseria" for the Tales of series! As I was playing that one since Symphonia alongside Final Fantasy) and so when the collection came out right as I got my Switch....I waited till a sale to try it again! (Another game I wanted that year came out, so I put FF10 on wait!) And yeah, I remembered that even if the "Corridor" feel of the game annoyed me (I played it back then two months AFTER beating FF9), everything else was exactly as I remembered and loved! (I even did better then before now that I knew how to use the fucking System! Compare the first "Summoner" battle when I played it back then when I got curb stomped, to the me who played again after so many played and beaten JRPG's under my belt by this point!) And the story was better too as I had alot more stories from books, movies and other RPG & games by this point that I wasn't the Middle school "Virgin" who barely could understand themes and can now appreciation month the stuff I missed because of my immaturity then!

    Can I please remind everyone -- preforming the Final Summoning would have killed Seymour! Any good PR for the Guado, or acceptance of Seymour, would have been posthumous at best. And Seymour knew this; he spoke to Yunalesca, he knew the truth. That is why he chose to pursue his "Everyone Finds Peace Through Death" plan because he did not see another way to save Spira. Trying to paint Jyscal as some kind of noble man because he wanted to martyr his son is insane, and Anima is just as bad for going along with it and telling a ten year old boy to kill himself so he can be accepted. Is it weird I still like Jecht as a character? I saw it like, he lived his life as a mega star and that just inflated his ego, making his parenting skills inept and just treating Tidas like he would a blitzball player. It however was his journey with Auron and Braska that matured him, learning from them both, cut off from his fame, that in the end made him a decent person. Tidas then went on the same journey as his dad, but unlike Jecht who finally matured and had the potential to be a father at the end of both their journeys, time had already past and Tidas didn't need him anymore. I appreciated the change Jecht went through, and in the end he embraced his fate of both having to fight his son and be beaten by him, his ego gone and content.

    There's also a major age difference. Yuna is 17, whilst Seymour is 28. A whole 11 years difference. So that also adds massively to the creep factor. Auron did once say "Those with power use that power. Maesters have power." which deepens the idea that Seymour was also more than just a creep if you catch my drift. He was using his powers as a Maester to influence and sway Yuna into marrying him. That kiss also during the wedding, at least to me, was not entirely consensual. She didn't lean into it, she didn't look like she even loved him. She looked as if she was about to brace for impact. Yuna said that she wanted to wed him for the unity and happiness of Spira. Not because she actually cares about him or loved him. And the relationship grew further and further apart the more we--and the group--encountered Seymour. To me, he was using her for his own gain, to become Sin, and continue the cycle of destruction. He's a monster in every meaning of the word. Endangered lives in Luca by staging that attack, murdered Maester Kinoc and prayed on Yuna's kindness and how she respected people of power in her field. I'm personally glad Seymour was sent to the Farplane, so he can never hurt another soul again.

    @@TheOneGuitarGuy The marriage was cringe and their difference in age made it even worse but it's what the people of Spira wanted to see. No one really cared about whether it's what Yuna wanted. You could hear clapping in the background when Seymour kissed Yuna. It's like they're putting on a show to make the people of Spira happy. And I don't think Seymour even loves Yuna. He just wants to use her to become Sin and destroy Spira, thus "saving" it and ending the people's suffering. He's basically adopted the thinking of Yunalesca.

  • @TheOneGuitarGuy

    @TheOneGuitarGuy

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@caldevens It was another factor at play in how Seymour was able to use her naivete to his advantage. He lied to her saying it would be what's best for Spira, but only truly wanted her for his own gain, to become the next Sin. He groomed her, in a sense. He promised her a future that wasn't true. He used her child naivete to meet his goals. And the way that he forced himself onto her at the wedding only furthers this, because it didn't seem like she actually loved him, she felt she was only doing what was right for Spira. He knew she was oblivious to his true intentions, and so during the wedding, he forced himself onto her, almost like he wanted to rush things and make her subservient to him and his desires. Y'know. Like a groomer. Regardless of Spira wanting to see it or not, it doesn't make it much better. He was not only manipulating her, but Spira as well. He made them believe he was a kind-hearted Maester, even though that wasn't true in the slightest. As Auron said, "Those with power use that power. Maesters have power." which was completely correct. He was using his influence as a Maester to make others believe that this is what was right for Spira, to make everyone happy. The writing in Final Fantasy X is unbelievably interesting in how they didn't shy away from topics of power dynamics, anti-theocratism, parental negligence and how it affects children, abuse of power, and so much more, which is why I like Final Fantasy X. I don't condone any of what I mentioned here in the slightest, but I'm glad it's all talked about.

  • @60wwediva

    @60wwediva

    3 жыл бұрын

    that's the problem with a lot of final fantasy gamers when it comes to X, no offense, but I never understood WHY everyone views seymour with such outright vitriol on top of not understand why he is the way he is. If you actually play the game and listen to the storyline objectively, as well as pay attention a detail oriented view, you'll end up realizing that Seymour was grinding on his own from the jump much like Tidus, but tidus always had some support and a beneficial path for his life. Seymour path was full of conditionals that wouldn't serve him at all. As sports star even if you retire, unless blitzball were to become extremely outdated (which is never in this case) he'd be loved for a lifetime or at least humbly respected through generation as he ages. This isn't a conditional cause people look at sports stars mostly with enduring adoration and respect unless said sport star does something evil. Sports also promotes teamwork even if one is to be the star. Seymour was pushed into a religious leadership at 10 years old, most religious careers are lonely ones where the person is meant to be a direct tool of service and it's more intellectually grueling and spiritually grueling than a sports star. Seymour clearly got disowned as a child and his mother failed him by not rationalizing clearly. her method of redeeming seymour back fired and didn't make sense. Her way of saving him was legit killing herself and not being there for him. notice both the father and seymour mother did not care about his well being? who was going to raise him? the church? Raising yourself in a strict religious environment with pressure of a nation on you on top of abandoment issues is call for disaster. anyways, his methods were evil and fucked up, but he himself is not the most evil of the series. from a real world anaylsis I'd say seymour had a lot of psychological issues and his emotions were cut off. He never had the capacity nor understanding to value anyone's well being or how his "plans" could falter under outside interventions cause he didn't have gudiance or normal socializing to teach him about society and socializing. you can look at him half the time and tell in his world it's just him and a bunch of old clergy men, outside of the clergy he doesn't have to answer to anyone or heed to anyone. That's sort of a basic thing. He never anticipated love getting in the way cause that wasn't normal to him nor a part of his life, he wasn't exposed to such. The dad's of tidus and seymour get flack but these submissive emotional mothers are the real villians here. Notice the cast in the game treat him as an evil bastard (yes he is one, but hear me out) instead of trying to unbiased reason with him. Never once does any main cast member or even seymour himself stop to objectively talk to each other to get to the root of these opposing views. Sure, seymour probably couldn't be reasoned with anyways, but it was clear someone needed to give Seymour an intervention instead of just going back & forth with him. He was a great villian but annoying cause of his personality.

(1) It emphasizes his connection to water, to the tides (2) it draws a parallel to the tragic Shakespearean hero Titus Andronicus (3) native Japanese speakers mispronounce gaijin words and names all the time (and we mispronounce their words in return), their pronunciation isn't necessarily "right" (4) As author C.J. Cherryh has observed, "a foreign accent, if intelligible, is often considered sexy". I don't see a downside.

    I understand, especially it being the way to say it as an english speaker. But as a scandinavian, we say "e" as the way english speakers says "i", and the other way around. That is why, as a young girl who spoke some english, I said Teedus - made more sense!

    Considering their target audience has always been America, and that they love American words, etc, Tidus is what I will always go with. As in Tidal wave, or Titus, or Titan. Teedus sounds fucking ridiculous.

    Could you do a video about the original characters that got scrapped apart from Tidus and Yuna? And awesome video by the way, love this channel 😎

    It was less about them being scrapped and more like reworked and overhauled into other characters. For example, Auron was the original main character of the game -- albeit, he was a plumper in the original version of Zanarkand.

    The best protagonist/antagonist duos ALWAYS have basically the same background, but maybe their upbringing was a bit different or they reacted differently to certain trauma and became good or evil as a result. Kuja and Zidane, for example, were both created to be an angel of death, just Kuja wasn't allowed to mature emotionally as Zidane had done. Cloud and Sephiroth were both super soldiers living under a delusion of superiority; Cloud pretending to be SOLDIER and Sephiroth mistakenly believing he was Jenova's son. The difference was that when crack came to fracture, Cloud reclaimed himself and Sephiroth lost himself entirely in his delusion. Finally, F12. While that game didn't really HAVE a main character, Princess Ashe was an appropriate foil for the Emperor. Both royal, both with access to horrifying powers via the Cryst shards, both wanted to rule Dalmasca and both were willing to use force to get there. There's really no one to say that Ashe would have been or was a better leader as the people in Dalmasca didn't seem all that pressed about their annexation. They even applauded their tyrant when he gave one rousing speech.

    I love the relationships and experiences between the characters in the game. I never considered the similarities between Seymour & Tidus though. This was very enlightening and brilliant on something I'm kicking myself over because it feels like I should have seen it without watching your video lol. I'm going to be binge watching your video for a while now. One of my favorite Final Fantasy games! I have to admit that I haven't played even half of the Final Fantasy games. FF 1-6 were before my time (born in the late 80s) and the first FF game I played was FF8 I believe. Then I played FF7 & FF9. I had easy access to those three since my older brother was a fan and had them among his games. FFX was the first of the franchise that I sought out myself and fell in love with it. Then I played X-2 & 12. FF11 I didn't play because it was online and had no clue how to do that plus we may have had a crap computer anyway. Playing a little of 13 was somehow disappointing, it didn't draw me in for some reason and it felt too slow in pacing to me so I never continued. This combined with my waning interest in RPG gaming discouraged me from continuing with further FF games sadly. The only other franchise in games that isn't horror I still love playing is Legend of Zelda. The Final Fantasy games I did play however, 7-X-2 & 12, I adore!
