I was there. At rehearsal the director told Robert to try and look like he was singing, Robert said, that's how I sing. They weren't happy, so Robert loosened the strings of his bass and made even less of effort to look like he was singing. The Countdown people were furious! Such a rebel! Love him to bits.

I saw this go to air on Australian TV. They made an impact on me. Style. The loose strings made me laugh .... I got the message that they were reluctantly miming. Still My favourite Cure song.

so many years later, this song is still amazing, the baseline is a classic, a timeless piece of music!

What can I say? Masterpiece. My fovourite.

Wow, I remember this! I was 16, & the Cure are still my favourite band. Just saw them recently in Sydney too, we were up the very front. Incredible experience.

Thanks, watching them on countdown all those years ago singing Primary got me into them, saw The Cure last night in Sydney, amazingly not only do they still sound brilliant with no support act they pretty much played all their songs for 3 straight hours.

I watched this on TV in 1981. I bought the cassette tape! It was the coolest song on the planet at the time.

Finally get to see this clip ....bout time .. Love it. .

This is great! I have a 'bizillion' video comps and 'audience-taped' (bootleg) performances collected over the years..and I've never seen this!! Awesome!

I bought The Cure's album "Faith" after this show. So even if it was not a "live" performance it served to showcase The Cure to the Australian public. If only The Smiths had appeared on Countdown my life would have been so much easier! Absolutely none of my friends had even heard of The Smiths.

With the unplugged basses with loose strings, I got sidetracked and almost didn't notice that the audience was full of 10-year-olds. Listen to them shout "yay" at the end. :)

Sweet adolescence ! Hear the applause at the end, the public are just kids. Did they know the luck they have seeing Cure ? ( even in playback )

Samuel Smith When bands used to play on Countdown they had to mime to the recorded version..

Both Robert and Simon turned the tuning keys of their basses until the strings were really loose, heck if they're not playing for real anyway, why not fuck around a bit?
