The Culture of Hookah | An Exploration of History and Tradition

Ойын-сауық

Hookah, also known as Shisha, involves adults smoking a flavored tobacco from a water pipe in which they pass a hose and take a puff among family or friends. It centers around conversations and promotes a more connectedness among those participating. Hookah is deeply rooted in a cultural tradition that has been present throughout generations among Indian, Persian, Turkish, Egyptian and other Middle Eastern families. Its gesture is more than an entertaining social activity or means to relax, it’s a way that families, relatives, friends and business associates in these cultures provide hospitality and strengthen bonds with one another.

Very nice! Hookah Tobacco bans around the world is an insult and a way for cigarette companies to eliminate any competition.

Yep. Tobacco ban is never about public health concern. If you look really close at the narratives, they always try compare other smoking devices to cigarettes. Like 1 cigar, 1 hookah session, 1 bowl of pipe tobacco, or how many mg of vaping liquid equals to how much cigarette. As to make smoking cigarettes more appealing and safe and how other smoking device is much more dangerous. Cigarette is like the center of it all, and if you make the time to read the research papers, you'll get tired of how much comparisons they make just to prove a point.

Great work! I could not agree more. I have made so many great friends, some of whom have become family, by smoking hookah. Hookah brothers and sisters will ALWAYS stand together.

People can debate all they want on the origin. One thing for sure, without Egypt there would not be an flavour tobacco ;) nor would there be the best of all pipes, Khalil Mamoon :)

That's right. My first hookah set was that of Khalil Mamoon. Even after millenias, Egypt is still a pioneer 👍🏻😁

Technically invented by a Persian in India. Louis Rousselet writes that the physician of Akbar, Hakim Aboul Futteh Ghilani, then invented the hookah in India. However, a quatrain of Ahlī Shirazi (d. 1535), a Persian poet, refers to the use of the ḡalyān, thus dating its use at least as early as the time of the Shah Ṭahmāsp I. It seems, therefore, that Abu’l-Fath Gilani should be credited with the introduction of the ḡalyān, already in use in Persia, into India.

Our cultures have exchanged many things over the years. The story of Chess (Chatrang) and Backgammon (Takht e Nard) is my favorite.

Hookah was discovered a long time ago, but it is not scientifically substantiated and it is only a matter of conjecture. Likewise, the ancient Indians used something similar. Again, it is not mentioned anywhere, it is not written, because it cannot be proven scientifically (such as in ancient paintings by painters at the time). However, one can trace old finds that look quite like ancient hookah. Therefore, the official date of the first discovery and mention of hookahs is considered to be approximately 16-17 centuries. The principle in history is the same as the principle of writing the Bible. The recently found writings of Mary Magdalene should rightly be considered the gospel of Mary Magdalene. However, the church called these found writings of Mary Magdalene untrustworthy, despite the fact that the scientists verified the origin and it is very likely that it was the famous Mary Magdalene who lived with Jesus - in his immediate vicinity. The content of this unrecognized 13th gospel also suggests this. Unfortunately, the church is called an "apogryph" for these things that do not fit into the Bible. Well and something similar is also the history of the hookahs. But so it is with everything on planet Earth. For example, in the field of various inventions. The first beer, wine, spirits ... even in this exemplary case, history is ruthless :). The true origin cannot be ascertained. For example, beer could have existed 10,000 years ago. However, if we have no evidence for this, it does not mean that someone has not tasted wheat fermented in water before. This certainly happened quite by accident, and not once, and not to one person, for a whole millennium, anywhere on the planet Earth. Of course, the process of making today's beer is complicated. But the basis has always been a fermented cereal containing sugars. The marks of the first beers can really reach tens of thousands of years ago. Unfortunately, science is science. :)
