He is such a humble soul and seems very approachable! I love that about him and the fact he and Billy were unafraid of experimenting with different music genres. Always fresh, Always new and yet unmistakably the Cult! Ian's voice is unique and still very strong. I will always love the Cult! Would love to meet him and Billy some day ❤❤

@@billylovelacejr I've always wanted to meet someone that I might be star struck over. I just don't think if I met famous actors, sports stars, whatever famous people do for a living that most people say they would love to meet just don't appeal to me. Not that I'm a prick or high and mighty and think I'm above everyone like some people have accused me of being. It's just that were all humans and because some are in the spotlight more than others I don't understand the appeal of meeting people and going gah gah over them solely because there famous or on tv and that's it. Nothing about their character, nothing about their beliefs, nothing about what their passionate about, nothing about their interests or great things they do for others because they have been blessed and fortunate and do what they can to give back to the less fortunate. No. None of these things, which to me would be the attractive characters I would look for in a famous actor, or athlete.... .........Auhh .......I've lost my place here............OH YEAH!! Ian Asbury is the only person that I would like to meet. I probably would be starstruck because....well you know?...right?........He's a part of the best band that ever existed and his powerful unique voice MESS YOU UP!!..THE CULT....THE CULT MAN!!!! I MEAN PLEASE!!!!! So for all you want a be bands out there TAKE HEED TO WHAT IS SAID!! YOU CAN TAKE SOME LESSONS FROM THE MAESTRO !!!!!! OR WHY DON'T YOU PLAY IN YOUR OWN BACK YARD !!!!!!! GET EM!!!! KILL EM!!!!!! THAT'S WHAT I WOULD DO TO ALL YOU LITTLE BANDS IF I WERE THERE!!!! I'D PUT MY DOG ON Yuns! 😉♥️👍

I hadn't listened to the Cult since around 2003'ish...not because I stopped liking them; my musical tastes changed as I started to get into other bands and, for some reason, over the last 20 years I really never revisited their catalog. That is, until just a few nights ago. I put on Love (the album) and I was instantly reminded why I loved them so much back in the day. Now I can't stop listening to the Cult and watching interviews with Astbury/Duffy. I also wasn't aware they had put out 3 albums after Beyond Good and Evil. I've got a lot of the Cult to catch up on! Side note: it's too bad they pretty much ignore their 1994 self-titled album. I know it was pretty much an Ian Astbury project, but goddamn, it's such a great album. In fact, it's my 2nd favorite Cult record after Love (although Sonic Temple is right up there). I love how stripped-down and raw it is, and how personal the lyrics are.

No need to slow down at all. I saw GnR back in 1993 (or 4) and Axl was so terrible that my friends made me leave after about 7 songs. His voice was shot, and it became common knowledge, during the 90's, that you were lucky if you caught GnR when his voice wasn't shot, because he screamed himself into laryngitis regularly. Also, he handled the crowd reaction like a spoiled primadonna. The opening act, Skid Row, was fantastic. I've never been an active fan of Skid Row, but they sounded amazing in that big venue (Birmingham Racetrack) and when the crowd threw firecrackers at Sebastian, he stood up to the idiots who did it, challenging them to meet him out back after if they had a problem, and he got the entire crowd on his side cheering as they hauled off the perps. When more idiots through stuff at Axl (for sucking mind you) he cried like a baby and left the stage so that they had to perform songs without a lead singer. Didn't come back for 3 songs. Then left AGAIN! it was TERRIBLE. Turned out that Skid Row seriously outshined GnR that day, to the disappointment of 10's of thousands of paying audience members, most of whom turned and left the stadium. Axl is not qualified to be the high water mark for front men. Not even close.

He claims that he wasn't trying to mimic Jim Morrison or go for a pastiche kind of thing, but having just watched a video of him play with the Doors; I have to thoroughly disagree there. Not only does he sing exactly like Morrison, he is also styled himself to look exactly like Morrison did. Don't get me wrong, he pulled it off and did a great job, but I do think he loses himself in a muddle of pretentiousness during that part of this interview. Sorry Ian!

Ian spent a number of years, I think about six years from ages 11-18?, in Canada, when his family moved there in 1973 according to Wikipedia and, from reading his bio over the years.

And here's a follow-up to my story and I had no intentions of hanging out with the cat I thought it was going to be the typical stereotype Rockstar he's going to be the pompous arrogant typical Rockstar personality that I have to deal with from time to time more than often but he was exactly the opposite and that's what intrigued me and that's why I like the man I think we think alike we have basically the same wants and needs and the same desires and you know I think we would be great friends be partners doing shit together and stuff and hanging out because we like each no other reason than that and I can say honestly I tried to make my encounter with him minimal I thought he was going to come in and tell me how I'm doing everything wrong but it wasn't like that at all he he said I was doing good he said he liked what I did and he admired what I did and I respected him for that and it and that's why we were friends because he treated me with respect like an equal

And it's no special gift or no special quality to treat someone with respect this is what you do that's how you conduct your life everyday and if you're not you need to change your ways we should always see each other as equals and give each other respect

And the truth be known that very few people can enjoy life On My Level because I am adventurous taking every opportunity that comes my way you know I like to live life George Carlin said it best life's not measured by how many breaths you take but by the moments that take your breath away and I believe that and he does too

Ian has always tried so hard to work out what The Cult should BE instead of just honestly writing good songs. I love this band but they are still often pretentious and reaching. In their best moments they let loose and trust instinct, maybe with age and experience they are learning that. It's kind of a return to the beginning of creative innocence all bands seem to begin with.
