The Cult Next Door: Global investigation into a dangerous ‘religious’ group | 7NEWS Spotlight

The Cult Next Door. 7NEWS Spotlight’s global investigation into a dangerous ‘religious’ group. They were two young Aussie women, enticed by faith and friendship, welcomed into a community made to feel safe and loved. But things quickly changed.
This week, in a 7NEWS Spotlight global investigation, for the first time the chilling true stories of the women who escaped a dangerous cult.
Branded as a religious movement, Providence has been operating in Australia since 1997, and is accused of recruiting young women in local shopping centres and universities then brainwashing them to travel to South Korea to become spiritual brides of a criminal.
Spotlight has uncovered allegations of serious crimes and brainwashing by the outfit which is registered as a charitable organisation in Australia.
7NEWS Europe correspondent Sarah Greenhalgh this week joins the 7NEWS Spotlight team and, in a world first, travels deep inside the secretive cult compound in South Korea to confront the leaders.
“We’ve been investigating this cult for six months and it has led us across Australia, to the US and South Korea,” said Sarah. “When we started, we knew there were serious allegations of coercive control and various forms of abuse, but we had no idea just how sinister this organisation is. What we’ve uncovered now involves the Australian Federal Police.
“Providence was founded in 1978 by self-professed ‘messiah’ Jeong Meong-Seok (JMS). The group claims to be a Christian religious movement with more than 40,000 Korean members and a presence in more than 70 countries including Australia. The ‘churches’ we’ve visited in Melbourne and Sydney are just like those in South Korea - there’s no signage, no lists of services, certainly no standard, ‘open door’ church policy. Instead, the faithful meet behind frosted glass, using secret pin codes for access.
“Providence is a cult. And the impact it has had on so many young women’s lives is enormous.”

The Lord Bless you and keep you, may his face turn apon you and be gracious to you!! I love how the bible always referred to fruit, if you grew fruit for a way of life, when it is ripen, you take it to market. You WILL be laid accordingly to the amount of fruit you have and the quality of that fruit! So rejoice in times of your greatest weaknesses, that is the time the holy spirit will do the most through you! (See you on the the other side). Me too. I regretted all the time wasted, thank goodness the cult i joined become too big and insanely perfectionist and anti sexual relationships "unless blessed" of course that i did not experience sexual assault at all. all the rest though I experience.. Sleep deprivation, food deprivation, extreme physical activities all to make your mind weak to keep you in their programming. total sacrifice of your life to dedicate yourself to "God" and the second coming of the messiah. I am positive that this JMS cult is inspired and copied the Unification Movement under Sun Myung Moon (deceased) they are know here in US as "Moonies" yeah and they're also the reason why I am here in US until today.

I was 1 year and 17 days old when the Jonestown massacre occurred. Many people believe Jim Jones acted alone but the women closest to JJ ensured his plan was completed. I still think about how people will join any type of religious group but will scoff at the manipulation and control of the people in Jonestown as being gullible fools. When a person signs over all critical thinking to an ideology... they place themselves and everyone around them in danger.

The closest thing to a cult I’ve ever joined is a fraternity in college. Of course there was no worshiping of anything or an all powerful member, but many of the techniques are similar. The rituals, the symbolism, (like dying and being reborn) the rules , almost daily activities, the chants, the letters, weekly meetings where you’d be called out in front of the entire frat, sleep deprivation at times, being forced to live in the house, and of course excommunication. If someone quit, no matter the reason, we had to act like they were nonexistent. I basically quit slowly at the end of sophomore year without making a fuss bc I got tired of it taking up so much of my time. I didn’t have any issues in that regard bc I still attended parties and participated in rush while continuing paying dues. Sororities and fraternities are like cult-lite. I will say though it’s absolutely nothing about buying friends like so many non-Greeks say. Greek life opens many doors not only in college but afterwards too. It basically is a way to enter elite society. Why do you think so many presidents, politicians, and famous individuals join secret societies?

I’m left speechless. God did say that there would be mass deceptions in the end times, and many that would rise up to power and mislead many. I’m glad this came to light and justice was served! Thanks to that one man who God miraculously worked through to shed light into this cruel cult. It shows us that God really does work through each and everyone of us to shed light or awaken people from there sleep.

When James's Investigative Reporters made BOMBSHELL interviews and EXPOSED Media and PFIZER "Bad Actors"... there were a select few "insider plants" on his Advisory Board who tried to SHUT HIM UP. I remembered 5 years ago, I was randomly approached by a group of Koreans. They invited me for an "bible study" which I declined because I was already involved in a church that time. I even had to say no a couple times and walk away because they kept following me around. A few days later, I saw an article on the internet. It was the exact name of the church the recruiters I met carried. I learned they send the ladies they are able to recruit to their leader and make them his wife. Insane.

I dealt with addiction for 15 years. Tried every counseling, treatment center and alternative medcine. I then got into opiates and thats when I hit rockbottom. Lost my real estate biz, fiance, all my relationships and everything I had built. I went into suicidal depression for 5 years. It was the darkest time I think I could ever experience.I got on my knees one night and prayed saying Jesus if you are really real like they say you are then please just reveal yourself to me. instantly the energy in the room changed and I felt this heavy conviction of the person I was. I started to genuinely ask for forgiveness repenting and crying which I never do. Culturally we males are conditioned to never cry so its embedded, but this night its like the floodgates opened. That night I was healed instantly. No more addiction, no more depression. I started to witness miracles after miracles and every day was filled with very positive coincidences. I was absoltuley mind boggled and still am. There really is a God and his name is Jesus. There really is a devil and he does nothing but decieve us. The greatest trick he has ever done they say was to lie to us that hes not real. Its so true. I was revealed to the evil. Just try Jesus. Im telling you and many others will agree, its a gurantee on this one. Best thing you will ever find in your life. Good luck and God bless.

No person should be your leader, master or lord. Hierarchies are inherently evil. Once a person accepts this dynamic they’ve placed themselves in harms way. It’s these type of people who attract psychopaths unfortunately which is why we should teach children how to think critically, question themselves and everyone around them. Teach them how to self govern so they don’t look to others for guidance or value.

  • @Dre2Dee2

Incorrect. Hierarchies are necessary for order. Can it be corrupted by maniacs? Yes obviously, but the idea when done correctly is perfectly sound Most people don't have the capacity to self-govern whatsoever, they want and need to be told what to do. You're better off building a good hierarchy then cutting people lose, because maniacs will cast out their net and end up catching them anyway, which is exactly what happened here

@@Dre2Dee2Humans call hierarchy God calls the pecking order and chain of command. Humans worship which is idolatry which is forbidden to worship man. It reads in the buy-bull buy-Baal oops I meant to say bible mind control psyop that man is inherently wicked that's been proven however, these mind control psyops are to divide and conquer making them easier to defeat. The ones pulling the strings are acting having their strings pulled allowing them to think they're in control. Anyone abusing power loses it, their title, their name, their timeline, their books. Keeps one humble and obedient to the ten commandments knowing God giveth God taketh away. They say the president is a cardboard cutout who's the man behind the man behind the man behind the man all the way up the chain of command. How was your stay on earth school? Ready for the Apocalypse the ascension process? In the end everyone gets on their knees but it didn't say why they get on their knees. With 97 being disinformation how do we know this even exists? If 97 percent of this earth school experiment is a lie how do we know we know something? Following a human could lead you into the bowels of hell on the wide path. I'll stick with Big G and avoid these psyops these cults that end up with koolaid and body bags. I'm pretty sure the infinite would never actually do these things. But see which part of God's creation is willing to do such things in order to know where we end up when crossing over. Quite the path to new earth.

'They make you feel accepted' - people who have experienced a childhood in which they didn't receive validation and warmth from parents for their authentic selves will fall victim to any club/ organization/ sect. When their level of unworthiness is huge they will attach to anyone who makes them feel good about themselves (also valid for toxic relationships). The leader manipulates taking advantage of their vulnerabilities and the followers falsely believe they are loved only in that context, which is absolutely false. The equation is complex, but the lesson here is for the followers to take their power back (which was never lost) recognize their worth, become self-sufficient and cultivate inner wisdom.

@@judyives1832 - I can see how *faith* in the twisted teachings and hive-mind-pressure can lead one to be so *devoted* that they lose their minds in the process. At the same time, proper faith in the correct teachings can be a blessing to one’s life, in my experience. In my view no one is without a religion of some sort, even the atheist. Since religion is merely a way or algorithm to live by, a worldview with a set of truths that one believes (or disbelieves) that underpin the way one behaves. We make up our “religion” as we go as we chose what to believe and disbelieve based on the input, experiences, and observations we make. So, I agree with you that religion can be harmful but disagree that it is always harmful nor do I agree that it is always anti-intellectual. Shalom.
