One of the most beautiful and saddest songs to come out of the 80's Few people remember who Edie Sedgwick was today, but this song is about her and her demise. She was an actress and model and heavily under the direct influence of Andy Warhol during the "The Factory" years Edie had a whole life and bright future ahead of her, right up to the day she died in her sleep on an overdose of barbiturates. (prescribed as medication) There is a whole lot more to the story, but regardless, the story is a sad one and the Cult gave her an honoring with this amazing song.
@lunatoona2826
2 жыл бұрын
Edie appeared in Vogue in August 1965 as a "youthquaker," as well as a fashion layout for Life magazine in the September 1965 issue. On February 13, 1966, Edie (along with Warhol and Wein) were photographed for The New York Times Magazine. With the glamorous Edie in tow, Warhol made the rounds of parties and gallery openings, and the dynamic duo generated reams of copy and free publicity. Thousands of fans mobbed them at an opening at the University of Pennsylvania. Originally an outsider, Warhol was now wooed by wealthy socialites and becoming a major part of the art establishment. In 1966, Warhol approached his musical "discovery" Lou Reed with a proposition. According to Reed, "Andy said I should write a song about Edie Sedgwick. I said 'Like what?' and he said, 'Oh, don't you think she's a femme fatale, Lou?' So I wrote 'Femme Fatale' and we gave it to Nico."

I have good news and a clarification for an earlier commentator who is referring to this band in the past tense. Although it could be said that they were to cool for Glam and too soon for Alternative, I’m happy to say that the iconic Rock band known as The Cult has never permanently stopped churning-out it’s uniquely creative and powerful brand of Rock music. The great albums keep coming so keep your eyes and ears out for their newest release that’s said to be currently in the works. Ian, Billy and the others are still more than happy to bring their great music straight its’ fans around the world via the road so stay informed because I believe that those tours bringing their blistering shows are yet to come. It can truly be said that the band known as The Cult is “like a fine wine”. (Oh yea . . . . and they still manage to avoid fitting-in and that’s fine by me!)

EDIE IS MY FAVE SONG OF THE CULT , SIMPLY AMAZING
Rest in Peace, Edie Sedgwick.
This is about Edie Sedgwick, a socialite who formed part of the artist Andy Warhol's Factory scene in New York in the '60s. Sedgwick featured in several Warhol films, including Poor Little Rich Girl and Beauty No. 2. Her final movie role was as Susan Superstar in Ciao! Manhattan, which was written and directed by John Palmer and David Weisman. This song takes the "Ciao Baby" part of its title from this film. Sedgwick lived a troubled life that was plagued by mental health issues and drug addictions. In 1971, Sedgwick died of an overdose. She was 28 years old. The film, Factory Girl, starring Sienna Miller, is about Sedgwick.
Such an underrated band. I can't count the times I've gone to parties and put some of their songs and inevitably somebody will say: "I love that song, who plays it?"... ugh. I will never understand why they never got to be as big as say... GNR, for example.

The GODS lay at your feet, Edie. You literally got it backwards.
Little Steven talked about Edie on his Sunday a.m. show on SiriusXM today. Then he played this song. Since I'm old and don't follow the Cult, it took me by surprise. This is a great cut.
After years and years...she remains my most emotional song..Ciao baby!!
I think they summarize most of the rock sound between the early 80 and the mid-late 90s, such an amazing band! They should be more and more accredited for that! And they have such wonderful hits. Totally in love!
Ian Astbury was a beautiful man, love that hair!

Still a moving testament to her life. Beautiful & tragic.
They have it all which makes for a great band. Best lead singer ever, guitar gods and wonderful drummer. They are GORGEOUS and they are PERFECT ❤️💕!!

YOU GOT THAT RIGHT, SISTERHOOD!
"An angel with a broken wing..." I knew a woman like that, once upon a time.
Not only do I love the Cult, but I Love Eddie Sidgwick (that is who the song is about). I was saw them in concert twice back in 1999 and met Ian Astbury. Great time!
The Cult,,,, so talented! A true epic rock band 🤟🤟 puts guns and roses to shame! No comparison! None! Thanks for all the killer tracks! You are all bonified and deserve the recognition!
the Cult , Edie Sedgwick, two gems for rock'n roll

1 year...2 states.. 3 venues..they just got bigger and louder, and BETTER
I love this video and the song. Ian is not only absolutely gorgeous he is at his best in performance. The Cult is a fabulous group and are no doubt the best group I have ever heard. I love Billy's leather jacket that says "Manchester" on the back. I know he is proud of where he comes from. I would be too. The live orchestra is an added special bonus.
The Best Band Of their time. Unequalled. Rock and Rolls' Swansong. Thanks Rick Rubin. He sar it on the Horizon.
The greatest wake up call I ever had was the morning after my room mate brother bought the then recently released Sonic Temple album and he woke me up playing "Fire Woman" extremely loud on a 9 speaker concert speaker in a two bedroom apartment. The Cult was our favorite band at the time and still his favorite band of all time. Great memory
Sonic temple, uno de los mejores discos de la historia del rock.. Tremenda banda!! Y que poco valorada
Watching this video is the best four minutes and 55 seconds of my life
If this song isn't in your list of Top 100 Songs Ever, your grandma would be ashamed of you.

Lol... hilarious cuz it’s true
According to a 1989 interview with vocalist/lyricist Ian Astbury: "Edie was inspired when I was in New York City when we were recording the Electric album. I have several friends there involved in the fashion industry and one in particular turned me on to a movie called Ciao Manhattan! I became extremely interested in the Velvet Underground and the Warhol period."

Is it just me, or is Billy Duffy's guitar solo at 2:07 fucking badass?

You're right. Only Billy Duffy is badass. . ALL the time. Woefully underrated when "names" are being bandied about as being great guitarists. His work is one half the reason the Cult is what it is. Steven Tyler and Joe Perry have nothing on these two.
It got a lot of airplay on MTV Europe in the summer of 1989. Brilliant song from the band I saw live in concert in Zagreb.
Sonic Temple. Masterpiece. Arguably one of their best records. I saw them several times around this time ...every time I could. Incredible band. All star lineup. Sorum is a monster drummer.
A favorite band since their debut. Rock n roll at its best
My brother & I love The Cult! His favorite album is “Electric.” Mine is “Sonic Temple.” Nobody’s wrong if everybody’s right! “Edie (Ciao Baby)” is my favorite song off of ST.
Sonic Temple is in my top 10 greatest albums of all time ..so there
I Love all the dedicated fans of this band, you got to hand to Ian and Billy for this masterpiece of work, been a loyal fan since Dream time.....
One of my favourite singles. Can't go wrong with a bit of rock ballad and string section!..
