We have our own cryptid in southern Kentucky. Hes known as methman. He is frequently seen around dollar stores asking for change or scurrying around abandoned cars near Kmart looking for catalytic converters. You can lure him out with mountain dew, or chase him off with a flashlight that has sharpie blue colored tape over the light and flashing it off and on quickly. Hes very fidgety when confronted, or extremely angry. Proceed with caution.

I can’t afford that much more in shipping. They’re taking money off the back end and it’s undoubtedly lost you a lot of sales. Not because your merch isn’t worth it, but because we simply can’t afford it.

I CAN'T BELIEVE HE BROUGHT UP THE HUMAN-FOOTED CATFISH OF LAKE WAUSAU! I didn't know anyone outside of my county knew about it. I've personally seen it with my own eyes during a heavy rain in summer, when I was coming back from a fishing journey. The Australian carpet shark, also known as a wobbegong shark is a common species of carpet shark, in fact the word “wobbegong” means “shaggy beard”, which correlates to the tassel-like barbels around its head! They’re known to lay on the bottom, using their coloration and those barbels to hide then ambush prey! Fun fact: carpet sharks include whale sharks, the largest living shark species, although the largest whale shark would still be smaller than Megalodon, which could grow over sixty feet!

I love his dedication to obscure cryptids in these videos, and all the little obscure items on them. I hate everything else about these videos. His criteria is entirely the opposite of mine. I see a cryptid being possibly real as a plus, he thinks it's boring. Like isn't that the whole point? Like he would probably rank Sonic as a super cool cryptid. I seriously think he has the worst taste in cryptids. Listing any folkloric or mythological being as cryptid also gets on my nerves for some reason. Adding Quetzalcóatl in this seems to me on par with adding the ancient Egyptian pantheon and arguing that maybe there were humans with animal heads walking around then. Gimme a break. No hate, though. He seems nice and I understand it's an entirely personal ranking, but for some reason some of his comments makes me irrationally irrate.

After finding your channel, it really got me thinking about how much i loved cryptids growing up and what influenced that. Part of it, and my point to my comment, was my grandfather's own made-up cryptid for me and his other grandchildren. It was called "The Boo-Hooter." My grandfather lived in the middle of nowhere Kansas in a beautiful three story home with a walkout basement leading to the arkansas River. He had ducting that rattled, and it would echo through the house. It lived in the air ducts and, at first glance, resembled an opossum or raccoon. But if you looked into its eyes, it would see what you were most afraid of, and shape-shift into that form in front of you. My grandfather would always go to the basement of his very large home, knowing we were playing next to air ducts, and whisper-growl gibberish into them to scare us. Many, many times, we heard The Boo-Hooter, but thankfully, we never saw it. Thinking about it as an adult is obviously kind of lame, but as a way to prank and tease your grandchildren, it's one of my favorite ideas for a folklore figure, and it belongs to my Grandfather's imagination. I miss my grandfather a lot. He was a character.

No. Quetzalcoatl is literally settled science. Calling the depiction anything rather than what it is would be like claiming the cross in Christianity, the rune stones in to ancient Norse, or the swastika to ancient Aryans (and it wasn't anything to do with racial supremacy) meant something other than what they clearly meant. Context is key, and depictions of esoteric, gnostic, or "occult" concepts of energies are not cryptids. Never were, never will be, and anybody trying to convince anyone otherwise is a used car salesman telling you the rusty WW2 jeep you're looking at is actually a Bugatti that means full bathtubs you should pout on your porch to bring good luck.

Stellar's sea ape is very possibly a joke from Stellar himself. He hated the captain of his voyage of the Atlantic, and some historians do think the description pretty closely matches the captain, and it would be a big insult. Alongside Stellar being a mad good naturalist, it would be incredibly unlikely for him to misidentify the seals that were around.

I don't know if you've covered it. But swedish folklore has a lot of unique and interessting cryptids that you might enjoy :) can give you two examples: Näcken. A creature most commonly known to take the shape of a young man playing a violin. He's said to dwell near rivers where he sits naked playing his enchanting tunes, luring you closer to then drown you. He's sometimes said to teach people how to play, and this later results in the one playing becoming obsessed and mad. Same goes for people listening to the one playing his toons. Mylingar. These are the unwanted children, killed by their parents or buried without being given a name. They are not often seen but are said to take the shapes of giant shadows or apparitions of children, though they can frequently be heard crying out for help or to be given a name. If you wander alone in the night they might jump on your back, weighing you down and demanding you carry them to a sacred place (mostly a graveyard) so that they can have peace. Other ways to help them is to tell them that they can have your own name or finding the body and giving it a propper burial and a name.

Steller was on a ship and was in constant arguments and disagreements with one of the other guys on the ship (I can’t remember who or what position he held), so the theory goes that the “sea ape” was him just making fun of that guy. Calling him an ape with the face of a dog and getting away with it. It’s my favorite explanation for any cryptic ever

A month after that period, Steller wrote about the sea ape. Ironically, that captain died about 3 months later from scurvy

the rant about copying cryptids and making up a more unique cryptid on the spot reminds me of when I was 10 and made up legend while walking the Appalachian trail and being taught how trail markings work, when I asked what if there's more than 2 lines on a tree I was told "I guess the painter was crazy then" sparking the idea that there's a "crazy man" out in the woods who was the person whose job was to paint the trail markings but went nuts. this was then compounded on top of reading through messages in a wooden post box on the trail where someone said "the monkeys were following them" which then made me think of monkeys dropping a stone on the trail painter's head to make him go crazy and become the monkey's leader, marking his territory with more than 2 trail markings and paint boot marks up in the trees edit: typos note: I wrote this before finishing the video and had no idea about the Agropelter, which sounds similar to the monkeys the trail note I read years ago mentioned

I think you asked why the Teratorn went extinct despite its dominance at some point. I'm a Paleo student, so I actually know this one! Organisms with a large body size are easier to drive to extinction because they require more food, have a slower reproductive rate and so evolve more slowly, and have a low population density because each individual needs more space to stay alive.

For those who liked Cryptid from Brazil, here are some cool ones: A mula sem cabeça (The headless Mule): is a ghost of a woman who was cursed for giving herself up to a priest and was condemned to transform into a mule that has fire instead of a head, galloping through the fields from sunset on Thursday until sunrise Friday sun. The myth has several variations regarding the sin that turned the cursed woman into a monster. Boto cor de rosa (Pink Boto): Boto who transforms into a beautiful and seductive man. In human form, the boto seduces women to impregnate them. These women are abandoned by the being, who returns to the river in his animal form. Cuca: is a mythical being responsible for kidnapping disobedient children. Cuca stalks people's homes at night and captures children who don't sleep at the right time and are restless. This legend was commonly used as a way to scare children.

@@svea880 boto cor de rosa is just a pink dolphin. It most likely started because of Brazil's high percentage of absent fathers. So locals would call the newly not married pregnant women "boto's woman" as a very roundabout way to probably shame them. I dont doubt they really believed in Boto though. Its also commonly said that the Boto habitates the Amazonian rivers

It is said that he appears close to the festival days in June, in his human form he is dressed in white and with a large hat. Apparently this legend was a way for women to explain how they ended up getting pregnant at parties and didn't know who the father was because he disappeared the same night. Wendigoon has inspired me with his rant about Altie. I'm coming up with my own cryptid to increase tourism to my house and get some notoriety: The Weepy Recluse The Weepy Recluse has been described as a humanoid type creature who can mimic both the appearance and vocal sound of either an adult or child human female. This includes long hair coming from their scalp, weeping that sounds like a human feminine voice, and an anywhere from 4 foot 11-6 foot slender figure. However, these creatures will always have the face of a cat-like creature upon closer inspection. They also have light red-ish or brown hairs covering their skin, that can shed much like a dog or house cat. Some theorize that, like domestic cats, these creatures have learned to mimic human behavior as they evolved to meet their needs. The Weepy Recluse have been known to seek shelter in abandoned structures, and occasionally even inhabited homes. They will forage from the space and create their own "nests". They have been known to steal food, blankets, and other materials from humans nearby to complete their spaces. When threatened, The Weepy Recluse will attack ferociously. They are rumored to leave scratches and bites that have some kind of poisonous residue, which causes a gangrenous effect in someone unlucky enough to be scratched. While some stories of them are frightening, most note that The Weepy Recluse seem "more scared of them than they are of it". While it is not advised to approach one of these creatures, some have noted a positive response to giving the creature food. One woman even claimed that a Weepy Recluse would visit her home frequently for meals, and may have brought other Recluses with them. Alright, that's my cryptids. Hope you all enjoyed! Edit: Shit, I forgot to mention for my own notoriety and tourism - I totally have one or something.

Altie legitimately just sounds like a sturgeon that was misidentified, it has a sturgeon like ridge and its big. Sturgeons as a group can get really big, it was not uncommon a few centuries ago to catch white sturgeon in the US in excess of 11ft and the world record for beluga sturgeon is 23ft. They can probably get big enough if given the opportunity to grow enough. So yeah definitely an F tier cryptid. TBF a lot of these Nessie type creatures could be explained as just a really big sturgeon. Even Nessie herself, more recent sightings by locals in inverness actually describe nessie as resembling more of a really big overturned boat hull which could match descriptions for a really big sturgeon or seal. And it is known that seals sometimes make their way into the river ness.

I've got a crazy theory of what some of the lake/river monsters could be. It could possibly be people seeing huge alligator snapping turtles that are extending their necks. Most people only see snapping turtles with their heads poking out of their shells when they're on land but they will extend their necks out pretty far in the water. They will quickly pull them back if they feel threatened like hearing a noise from the bank. Alligator snapping turtles are pretty gnarly looking too.

Have you heard of the Dark Watchers of California? They're said to be giant shadow people that inhabit the Santa Lucia mountains, often depicted with wide-brim hats and walking sticks. They're said to watch travels from above, still and silent. If one attempts to get close, they disappear. The sightings go back, too. The native Chumash have peoples similar to their depictions, and Spanish settlers also reported their own sightings. Even Steinbeck mentions them in a short story, 'Flight'. No one knows who or what they are, or much less what their intentions are, leading to a very interesting mystery to this day.
