The Cruel Fate That Awaits a Hornet Queen

Ойын-сауық

As winter approaches, hornets begin to ruthlessly purge the colony of members who are no longer needed. From dumping excess larvae to starving their own queen, once her work is done.

That late in the year, most ant colonies are preparing for hibernation, and as such the queen ant usually stops producing new eggs for the next 3-5 months depending on weather. Because of this, the ants mostly leave the wasp larvae alone.

They do protect SOME of the larva, though. Both the queen and the colony itself is still succeeding in carrying onto another generation, they just needed to thin the horde out in order to do it. When you think about it, bees don't have it that much better: the drones get dumped out to starve to death just as winter comes. Real nice retirement for your hard-working labor force, huh?

When I was about 14-15 years old, I posted this original comment: "This reinforces my opinion that hornets are horrible little demons that do horrible things in their horrible nests." These no longer reflect my views today on wasps and hornets; they are simply little animals doing their best to survive. Yes, they can be scary and even dangerous, but they also help the ecosystem; they not only pollinate flowers, but they also prey on plant eating insects, controlling the population of herbivorous bugs. They are as much nature's gardeners as their more well-liked sisters, the bees. And like bees, they only sting to protect themselves and their hives. It is just hornets and wasps tend to be more comfortable nesting near human habitation than wild bees that leads to more risk. They are not out to get you, and if you are careful and respectful, they will not sting. All in all, the social wasps and hornets are undeserving of the scorn and hate they receive. They are charming and beautiful insects in their own right, and deserve our respect at the very least. They are simply little animals trying to get by in a world much bigger than them.

I had a small paper wasp nest on the eve of my house, once, and I left it because it was out-of-the way, Google said it wasn't an aggressive species (and I never got stung,) and they pay rent by eating garden pests. One day I was out in the garden, and noticed a bunch of little white things on the ground underneath--then realized they were grubs. I never knew what the heck had happened 'til now. My guess is that those that were born recently are given priority because that means they will take longer to be born (in other words, more closer to the end of winter) then they can be born and fight for the right to be queen...

All the hornets are divided evenly into 2 groups at random hornets. A purple hornet shows up and with a snap half the hornets disappear thus saving food for the other half

They're un-intelligent and lazy compared to their honey bee cousins. They just live for today and have no regard for the future. They don't have any system in place like their honey bee cousins do to survive the winter. So they have to kill half of their population at random every winter, just to survive.

@@StrawberryNinjaNibbles Sympathising... were did you find some sympathie for hornets here around? What I found was hate... hate for an insect making cruel but smart "decisions" without thinking about it, just due to its insticts. Calling animals cruel and mean while they do what they do normally for thousands of years is what I call stupidity, especially when the being, which calls them cruel is in fact not a bit less cruel while killing thousands of animals per day. Yeah I know that these guys know nothing about nature and its processes, but assuming evil purposes to an insect is what I call stupid.
