Karl Johnson is amazing as always and Fisayo Akinade deserves an Olivier nomination, he was heartbreaking in this!

It's difficult to put on a production of this play which doesn't send you reeling out of the theatre in horror. This one was very strong in pointing up the pure self-centredness of most of these blinkered people. The set was rather eccentric, but it didn't matter, because you couldn't take your eyes off the principal actors. They came as near perfection as you are likely to see on any stage anywhere, and maintained a fine balance of intensity, so that Abigail's deranged antics did not for once run away with the show.

Interracial casting can work in some modern-day drama, opera, ballet - it's actually been going on for years. I remember a fair amount back in the 1970's: sometimes it worked, sometimes not. Fact of the matter is - certain kinds of drama demands authenticity and credibility. I believe *The Crucible* - one of the great modern plays - requires actors/actresses who at least roughly RESEMBLE the parts of their characters. Tituba could not convincingly be acted by a white or Asian woman -- Tituba was black, thus should be cast accordingly. Minister John Hale was presumably white, thus should be cast accordingly. To do otherwise dilutes (distorts?) the ideas, the history, the whole meaning of the drama.

Fun fact I only recently found out: Tituba wasn't actually Black, she was more likely Native American or South American. So technically, she's been cast interracially nearly every time this play has been performed! If you're looking for total historical accuracy, watch a documentary, not a fictionalized version of historical events. In my opinion, people should be cast based on talent rather than skin color unless it's important to their character - which, considering this production changes the setting from its original historical context in the first place, I would argue it is not. Frankly, I would say the idea that the very message of The Crucible hinges on whether the actor playing Reverend Hale is white or not is an insult to the play. A more modern presentation only serves to drive home the parallels that Miller was trying to draw between literal witch-hunts and modern-day political witch-hunts.

I agree with you. I am a descendant of an accused witch and I can't imagine if a white woman were cast as a historical black figure how that would go down, but its perfectly fine to do this. These were real people even if its a fictionalized take. This distorts history and so much of the message. The main players in this story were all white besides Tituba who was actually Native.
