I think the whole point of the Duke of Windsor's character in show is that, while he truly loves his wife, deep down he still thinks of himself as a member of the Royal Family and wants to protect the Crown. That's why he advises Elizabeth to move to Buckingham Palace and keep the surname Windor in episode 3, and that's why he tells her that, as Queen, she cannot support Margaret. I don't think it's a coincidence that when he approaches the phone he's wearing a mask, and he takes it off when he talks to his niece. He takes off his mask of contempt for the Royal Family and gives Elizabeth honest advice.

The Duke of Windsor would always have thought himself as a member of the Royal family. As a Royal Duke and a Prince of the United Kingdom, he wouldn't think of himself otherwise. There were other issues that kept the Duke of Windsor in permanent exile in Paris, but none of those issues undermined his own Royal and Princely status within the Royal family. Here is the Duke of Windsor's Royal Coat of Arms after his abdication, which includes not only his Princely Coronet, but the belt for the Knight of the Garter, his own stall of which was still extant in St George's Chapel Windsor castle until his death in 1972: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_VIII#/media/File:Coat_of_Arms_of_Edward,_Duke_of_Windsor.svg

6elffauno9--Not really. ER II's childhood was only geared to raising her as a princess to wed some worthy royal from elsewhere, until 1935 when the Wallis/"David" mess began to be taken seriously. After the abdication, she was raised to be Queen. All her education (tutoring by some of the highest-placed and well-educated men in the country) was geared to that, in spite of Crawfie's book leading you to believe she was the sole governess (babysitter with some teaching skills) to ER II. ER II KNEW what she had to do about Margaret. Her mother was no real help (Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, the Queen Mother was KNOWN to take to her bed in crises until they were over). She consulted with the Archbishop of Canterbury, the then Prime Minister, Anthony Eden, her own Palace advisors, and various others. She sought out "David" as the only other living person (Queen Mary was dead by now) who would understand the dichotomy she was facing: am I sister, Queen, or can I reconcile both. The answer is no, you CAN'T. She knew it, but only Edward could tell her that to reinforce what she already knew. This actress does well with the facial expressions of ER II as she grapples with her inner conflict and then firms her resolve.

Nah she probably felt understood in a way, everyone she interacted with wanted her to behave certain way or to feel certain way. Even Philip was more likely to berated her for not doing what he/they wanted, always forgetting the hard position she was in. In the show ofc, there were many scenes Elizabeth wanted someone to listen and support her or even pretend to understand her but Philip never did while Edward did. He acknowledged how hard it is, understood it in a deeper level than most and was completely honest on how much it sucks. In a way Elizabeth knew what she had to do, she always did, she only needed that final push to go through with it

See you soon, love ya, bye " and then I'll either see them in 4 hours or like next week lol. Obviously not with professional calls... But yeah... even then we say bye at least three times each ! He was hardly unbiased. And in really life she hardly ever contacted him. Reportedly, she, like her mother, blames him for dumping the whole kingship in a country going to war on her father, leading to his early death. I’ve also read thats the reason she’ll never abdicate even if she lives to be 100, because she was taught it was a lifetime duty and you couldn’t Just abandon it . Compare that to the royal family of the Netherlands, who routinely step down after 20 years or so to let the next generation have a chance. Sometimes I think Elizabeth is trying to outlive Charles because she’s not sure the monarchy will survive him. And that’s nothing against him.

The rules really screwed Edward. He chose love over duty. You can say that's wrong, it's a valid opinion... But from this acting at least you can obviously see that it wasn't as if he just indulged himself. He made a choice for love while also understanding duty. It was his duty to be King, but he couldn't do it with her. So it was his duty to remove her or himself from the equation.

Mel back then they had not made the connection between cigarette smoke and lung cancer. The tobacco companies knew but they kept the information quiet and every time the medical community brought it up they’d to a propaganda thing to hide the information. Plus if George VI had not been so stressed about being king during the war he might not have smoked so much. It was the church’s rule about divorce, not just the total family. Besides, Wallis was a godsend to British government. They didn’t trust Edward as king, his own father didn’t think he’d be a good king and he was way too fond of Nazi Germany. Maybe it was because he just wanted peace at all costs, maybe it was because he so defeated the Soviet Russians for what they did to his godparents the Tsar and family, and thought they were a bigger threat than Germany, or maybe because he was a selfish entitled brat. Maybe some combo of all of them. But the world would probably have been much worse off if he hadn’t abdicated

Throughout the entire series I've underestimated David and hated him for what he was. But I realized I was looking at it from the Queen Mother's eyes. And after seeing this scene, I've come to realize that he is actually quite a kind and understaing character who in the end just wanted to protect the Crown that was once his for a short period of time.

The real Edward was a selfish, irresponsible narcissist and his own father regretted that Edward would be made king when he died. Edward was a nazi sympathiser and would have happily allowed his brother and nieces to die at the hands of the Nazi's or at the very least be forced into exile if it meant he could be King and Wallis Simpson made Queen if the Nazi's ever successfully invaded Britain. Edward only ever cared for himself and that is historical fact.

[In this show] In spite of his own flaws and inadequacies to be a rightful monarch for its people, he did advise her with dutiful council. He could have easily strayed her judgement on multiple occasions with ill council, which he favoured for himself. I think, in his mind, he redeemed his duties as a former king by guiding Elizabeth to use her brain and fulfill the duties of the crown rather than follow her heart like he did. Overall they did an excellent job of portraying such a complex, one-leg-in-each-boat, character. This show truly brings out the complexities of human behaviour and desire within every character. I imagine that is hard to do when the characters are/were real life humans with very public lives. It is easy to create action and drama in fictionalized stories/characters. But, to showcase potential real emotions and inner battles that each real character may have experienced in real time history makes this show that much more intense. Because we can't think "oh that was fiction, it can never happen in real life." IMO, nothing is more petrifying than reality.

This exchange's impact can really be seen in the queen as depicted by Olivia Coleman in seasons 3 and 4. The conflict between her self, and her duty as 'the crown' has ended, with the latter winning decisively. This simultaneously means that respect for the crown is maintained, republicanism is forestalled, but her family is really in ruins as a result. Love triangles, affairs, heartbreak, stress-related disease. There is no stability in the family except for her duty to the crown. She is the rock that everyone must cling to, their oxygen, that they must breathe...

Him too: theres the despicable, vile, vain man, always spitting on his family in their back, showing no regrets in encouraging the bombings of his own people... and the other half, still there somewhere, caring about it all, and showing his true colors and emotions when revealing that half. His tragedy is that he was never able to make that other half prevail.

One of the few production details the set artists and clothiers in the entire series did not get right: when wearing white tie, the black tailcoat's front should always extend below the white piqué vest, not leaving any white visible underneath it. Now, some foreigners visiting the Court of St James's or some guests at a party thrown by the Duke might not have been aware of this, but the Duke himself, that perennial style icon and stickler for fashion etiquette, most certainly was.

It's very unlikely that she did. She had a deep contempt for her Uncle David's failure to do his duty. The Queen Mother despised the Duke of Windsor and held him responsible for the decline of her husband's health and his early death. The whole family was brought up to see Edward VIII as a selfish, vain, grasping failure. The Queen had no shortage of advisors and no need to talk to the Duke of Windsor, who was out of touch with events in Britain anyway.

I suggest that ANYONE who has sympathy for "David" as he was known to the family read King of Fools by John Parker and then read the insipid, infantile, and silly letters exchanged between two supposedly adults of middle age. It appears that history is repeating itself with Harry, the Ginger Poodle, and Meganut.
