The first Crow movie was not made for a certain audience IMO, it was not intentionally for goths, nerds or that particular generation; it was a piece of art that was so good a LOT of people loved it. The city and ambience even I can say is its own character. And I think that's the problem with today's movies, they target a particular group of audiences instead of making something with heart, soul and most importantly art. Love you review BTW, and you are right; it's not for us but for the generation tiktok.

As an elder goth, I am very much in the "Not MY Crow" camp. I love the original and I even love the second crow movie "City of Angels" because it's visually stunning and has great characters. I agree with the person who commented that they should have used any other names than Eric and Shelley. Then it could have just been a Crow story, not THE Crow...nobody beats Brandon, so why try?

I agree. Elder goth , born on Devil's Night I truly believe they strayed even from the comics, not just with the looks but the story. I've watched The Crow 1994 since I was 20 yrs old every birthday till now. I love Bill Skarsgard as an actor but they did not need to make another reboot of the Draven storyline with Shelly.

Shelly was neither random nor 1 dimensional in the original. The reason they were attacked was she was leading the people in the building to block them being evicted. She was leading the charge against a corporation. That's a strong woman.

@@RandomGothCouple that may have been scrapped because the actress who played Shelly had to be threatened with a lawsuit for breach of contract for refusing to return to filming after Brandon Lee's death. Who knows if they would have shown more of her story if that tragedy had not occurred.

Yes and no they gave her some back story about why she was killed but her character really leaves no impact in that OG movie beyond visuals and feeling bad for her because she's a woman who was raped and killed. In thia trailer they are definitely trying to make her more of a character and give her more development on screen time to evolve. The original works because of the gothic atmosphere and Brandon's charisma. This one is going more for the brutality of the comic in the comic the Crow is a darker more brutal character they casted Lee because of his on screen charisma to make you relate to the character more and root for him more. This Crow looks more brutal and harder edge with the violence more like the Crow meets John Wick. This approach can work and can make an entertaining movie but will lack that more dramatic deeper feel of the OG. Overall the trailer looks good enough for a trailer and will probably be entertaining enough.

@@boomstickcritique902 the original graphic novel didn't give much backstory to Shelly either. It could be because James O'Barr based her off his fiance who was killed in a car accident by a drunk driver. It was his revenge fantasy fueled by his grief. So it really focused on his love for her and his loss. Much like the original film. Even though it changed the circumstances of their murders from the comic, it had the same basic themes.

@@georgiarn3915 Yea I know in the comic Eric and Shelly got killed just because they happen to run a crossed a gang doing a killing and they are killed for being witness I believe. In the ending of the comic the Crow I think from memory kills the gang leader with a sledge hammer asking him something like how many angles can fit on the end of a pin or something. The comic crow also would self mutilate.

If they wanna make a Crow movie with Eric and Shelly, then adapt James O'Barr's graphic novel. Seeing how in 2020 he's no longer involved and said, _"That reboot thing has been going on for almost 12 years now with different studios trying to make it. To me, it’s not necessary,"_ , I'm not hopeful this one is gonna be faithful to the source. Especially with Florida Crow doing his John Wick thing.

People once believed that Hollywood was where epic stories originated, that when you sat down in a theater your soul would be carried to a land of wonder and dreams. But sometimes, something so bad happens to the stories you love that a terrible sadness is carried with it and your soul can’t rest. Then sometimes, just sometimes, only the original film can bring that soul back to put the wrong things right. If the movies we love are stolen from us, the way to have them live on is to never stop loving the originals. Box offices burn, franchises die, but real love is forever. RIP BL/ED.

The hill I have ALWAYS said I would fall upon my sword on is that if you want to make a new Crow movie, have at JUST LEAVE DRAVEN alone. O’Barr never intended the graphic novel to be anything other than a one off story, the catharsis of his own pain. Then Lee died during filming (which is why the original movie isn’t as true to the source material; they had a ton of scenes still left to film and subsequently had to cobble together what they did at the urgence of the Lee family and his fiancée Eliza who pushed Proyas to complete the film when he and the crew weren’t going to) and when Lee died, O’Barr decided to make the source material an anthology series SPECIFICALLY to insulate Draven as Brandon’s character. When the idea of rebooting it emerged, O’Barr was on board so long as they kept the reboot to the original source material. He pointed out numerous times that the GN didn’t designate last names, so they could do and Eric & Shelly that aligned with the GN without infringing on the original movie the same way that Dracula has both a Bela Lugosi version and. Francis Ford Coppola version. This trailer, I mean, this might be a great chapter in the Crow franchise BUT NOT A SINGLE THING is from the original source material (like Sanders keeps trying to say they were using) and this is NOT DRAVEN. Yes, I will die on this hill.

As a non goth but grew up watching original Crow movie. I have agree this is definitely "Not My Crow Movie" 😂 But they could've left out Shelly and Eric's names in this movie and used as another story line about how the Crow is guiding another soul on revenge like all of the sequels of The Crow did back in the 90's. I also get Batman Jared Leto and Heath Ledger vibes off of Bill too even Twiggy was giving me a bit of Harley Quinn vibes too.

I really liked your breakdown here! I actually think it came off better than I expected, but still nothing too great. I was 17 when the 94 film hit, and I've loved it ever since, but you two are correct. This isn't really a film for us folks, and I can accept that. I mean, there were fans of the Burton Batman that never accepted the Nolan films, so it's just part of that gap between ages. As far as the name and the characters, I believe the rights were about to lapse, so the studio had to make a 'Crow' film or lose them. I liked that it looks like it'll be more violent, like the graphic novels were, but this is definitely a more action/gamer type take.

In regards to The Crow, I remember it constantly being on TV and seeing the VHS, but I never just sat down and watched it from beginning to end when I was kid. I remember liking Brandon and the aesthetic. When I saw this trailer, Bill's look gave me immediate Leto Joker vibes and no one wants to be reminded of that. Since I am not deeply attached to the OG, I will give this one a chance because of the concept, but I do wish it gave more of the original's aesthetic. (Side note: I started typing all of this before finishing the videoa and you basically said all of the same things, so yeah. LOL.)

The crow comics had so many individuals turning into the crow, from Eric Draven, iris shawn (former fbi who was pregnant when she died), the nameless man(jewish man turned into a crow in a concentration camp), Carrie (six year old who goes a detective to solve her murder), but no. They had to recycle the most iconic they got ... For... Reasons? He looks like Sad Ninja from Die Antword... This... Makes City of Angels and Salvation look kinda good. I feel like this remake doesn't got atmosphere, doesn't feel like a grungy city, doesn't feels like a gothic punk story. And no, this movie looks bad but not as bad as Wicked Prayer, no one can save that crow movie

As a commentor said below yes a man lost his fiancé and to deal with the loss he wrote this story. The visuals in the original were amazing, but the to me the writing was just as amazing. Lessons that were taught through short dialog. "Each one of these is a life you helped destroy" Talking about the rings on the pawn shop owner. Nothing is trivial..yes the trivial things in a relationship matter. The little things you do for each other. My mother loved the little things like helping her with chores, making her cup of coffee. My mother letting my dad get a few more hours of sleep when he worked 15 hour shift, making him dinner even though he didn't ask her to. "Mother is the word of God on the lips hearts of all children." Just this line alone is powerful. Yes, Brandon nailed it..between avenging angel and compassionate and loving man. The way he held and talked to Sarah was showing the great father he would have made to her. Overall, this is one of my favorite movies of all time. Truly a masterpiece. Also, the whole concept of the difference between how Eric is portrayed. Brandon already nailed it. From costume to his demeanor. I think Bill is amazing actor, but it just feels off. RIP Brandon Lee. I will say I don't think they should remake it as this movie as original stands the test of time and since Brandon passed on this set. It feels well wrong. But that is just my opinion it just feels distasteful.

Exactly this. As someone who is still deeply in love with my spouse, the story of O'Barr's Eric and Shelly resonates so much with me, and my heart still breaks for his own loss. Time doesn't make it easier. The comic gave glimpses into what may appear to be small, simple moments between a couple to others, but they are far from small and simple to that couple. For them, those moments were precious, irreplaceable. Because they were experiencing life with each other, with the person who was their entire world and made life worth living.

I’m definitely going to see this one too and won’t be comparing it to the original because its not going to be comparable to the classic. It seems like it’s taking the story and retelling it in a way geared towards a younger audience like you mentioned. Also I heard that this interpretation may be based off of a specific The Crow comic?

  • @BurningFreesias
    @BurningFreesias3 ай бұрын

I mean, Eric Draven is essentially James O'Barr's self-insert and outlet for his grief over his late fiance. I feel like there should be something kept sacred about that, as well as Brandon's own tragic death while on set, and that the first film was sufficient in breathing life into the comic. Granted, even the '94 film gave some connection as to how and why Eric and Shelly died, but what made the torture and deaths of O'Barr's Eric and Shelly both so horrible and horrifying for me was precisely how random and thoughtless it was. Bestial and cruel for cruelty's sake on a completely innocent and vulnerable couple minding their own damn business in the wrong place at the wrong time. Returning from a honeymoon, Eric and Shelly were lovers who connected and comforted each other in a way no one else could. They were each other's rock and sanctuary, much like O'Barr and his late fiance. It was wholesome as hell, which only amplified its ultimate tragedy. I feel like the Crow is a story of love and lament above all. Perhaps if Skarsgard was a completely different Crow, like Alex from Salvation, or Ashe from City of Angels, I'd feel better about it. I can get behind Crows inhabiting different restless souls as opposed to the one. It adds a world-building mysticism to it. But Skarsgard just isn't James' Eric to me. Just at first glance, Bill's completely misses the very intentional influences that musicians like Iggy Pop and Peter Murphy had on Eric's appearance that the design team wonderfully adapted through Brandon. Hopefully James will still benefit from the royalties of it, at the very least.

We had ours and like Heath Ledgers Joker, no one will top or replace Brandon Lee's Eric Draven. There should be an asterisk when talking about both movies, Crow 2024 vs Original Crow. This movies looks to be inspired by too many other movies- John Wick, The Dark Knight, Suicide Squad, you can even sprinkle a little of Constantine with the supernatural elements. What's funny is that after watching your reaction in the future whenever I hear 2024 Eric Draven speak all I'm gonna hear is Jared Leto's Joker. 😂

Geidi Prime has so much more goth going on: The Giger influences in the architecture, the scenes filmed in infrared, the techno vinyl and plasteel costumes (and spider woman in the first film), the black goo and the white skin and the black teeth. Oh, and the music! Lots more happening with the music than the desert themes. The piece that plays during Lady Fenring's hypnotic stroll through the castle? So atmospheric! It's the Addams Family sequel that completes the saga.
