So I'm trying to sit through your review and ironically you said that you were going to go and open-minded but yet you're not you're not even letting the whole trailer play out before you start putting in your judgments rather you realize it or not. That is not going in with an open mind. You should have watched the full trailer first and then give your thoughts on it. Let's get over the look of the character and look at the story that's being told cuz it looks like that's what people are missing and why they don't realize that this is closer to the book than the original film.. they're allowing themselves to be distracted by something that they're holding on to instead of letting the movie be what it's supposed to be a remake and not a copy and most likely out of respect to Brandon Lee's version let him have that let this be Bill skarsgard's version. people shitted on the second Crow film and even though it was a different Crow people hated on it but now that's turned around and a lot of people appreciate it and even love it. With that being said since people keep bringing up his appearance as a person who is into all genres of musicwhat you may not realize is that this is not a Mumble rap thing or for a rapper's aesthetic they literally have stole that from the punk scene of today because they're trying to stand out cuz their music is shit. So by making themselves look the oxymoronic opposition of what hip hop is this is what you're now seeing so no this is not a hip hop influence look this is a punk of today look just like the original Crow was taken from the punk / goth scene of that era. For the record I am 50 years old so I have seen a lot I've been in the Goth Punk scene as an African-American I was raised on hip hop before hip hop even existed I was there for its creation. So I'm able to see what's being done here. People need to take this movie compare it to the book and not the original film. Because the one thing that I see in this trailer that it was not present in the original film which is the most important components is the true love relationship that they had for each other. You get it in a little clips of flashbacks here and there. And you feel bad for them only because of the brutality in which their lives were taken. But in this film it looks like you get to actually see it and feel it I lived there loved through them if it is executed correctly. Thuss when they die you'll feel it even more. And you'll be right there with him when he's exacting his revenge. That's what I got from this trailer and it literally touched me as a helpless romantic. And I think people are so blinded or distracted by his appearance not being the same as Brandon Lee's that they're not letting the movie wash over them and seeing the trailer for what it is.

If you've noticed I've been replying as your video has gone along vs. watching the whole thing. Because I want to make sure that I hit each points when I respond to them. the fact that you think the movie is going to fail. I could be completely wrong but I seriously doubt it who are not biased will see how much closer this is to the comic book versus the original film. Then you have the action sayings that love John wick etc. and the irony of it is I believe that the reason why a lot of people who are hating on this film love the original so much is because they were within the goth community so they felt like this was speaking to them as Goths and they embraced it. And now that they feel that that's been taken away from them they feel betrayed. But unfortunately for them as well as possibly yourself there's not enough of you to make this movie fail. The masses of people that will see this are the people who are more open-minded such as myself the younger generation that have no connection to the original Crow or that may be willing to like both then like I said before you have the John wick action fans the soundtrack also may draw people in if it's a great soundtrack. So at the end of the day this movie will not fail. In fact the negative press may make it do better than people are expecting. I'll put it this way I expected the first transference movie to be such shit that when I saw it I overhyped it. And it wasn't until I pulled back that I realized that movie wasn't as good as I thought it was. So it's possible that the same thing could happen with this.

@@thetrasharoundmyplastic6342 i appreciate you taking the time to type this all out, and I am glad that you have muc higher hopes for it than I. Incase you arent familiar, reactionary content like this video tends to be done in this format where the reactions and reviews get recorded through the witnessing as opposed to taking it in as a whole and then reviewing. I will completely openly say that my love of the original movie did indeed create bias in this reaction, however, remakes of well known and well loved movies play on the nostalgia and love of the most popular original media, in this case the Brandon Lee movie. I have read a few of the comics, so i am no expert, but from what everyone is saying, the imagery and what we can see of the story is even further from Eric and Shelley's story than the 1994 movie was. I genuinely hope that it does live up to your expectations. As i said, i hope my appraisal is wrong... But for now I stick by what I said. 💜

The Crow can bring anyone back. Literally anyone. Why on Earth would they make him Eric Draven. Change the character name and 99% of complaints go away. When you remake something you just invite comparisons. If it wasnt Eric Draven then we cant say "that isnt like the original Eric Draven." or "This doesnt feel like the first one" because it wasnt supposed to be. But this is supposed to be Eric and Shelly. Color me disappointed in this

After seeing the trailer I'm pretty sure a lot of people don't understand The Crow in the comics what made Eric and Shelly's death tragic is that it was a random crime not planned by some rich elite. The action and the revenge was never the point it was about Eric's guilt and anger, the white horse the crow and the skull cowboy all represented a part of his broken psyche. The Brandon Lee version kinda detoured from some aspects but in the end it understood the characters this new version just feels like a cheap cash grab for "modern" audiences

When that reboot was announced I was not board with it and I’ll tell you why. I did not wanna see some super muscular wrestler type go on a revenge journey. What made Brandon Lee the perfect candidate to play Eric Draven was that he was an “every man” type. The way Clint Eastwood played “The Man With No Name” so that any man could see themselves in that character. The way Bruce Willis played John McClane, an every man flawed cop with a rocky marriage who can get hurt. How could I possibly identify with and see myself in a 6’4” 240 lb dude going on a revenge spree to avenge his woman? That would’ve been horrible casting in my personal opinion. Brandon Lee brought so much heart and soul into every one of his performances and every line he spoke. The way he played Eric was something I could identify with. Even the way he played Eric while on his spree was very comical at times and performative. His personality was already larger than his physicality. We wouldn’t have needed a hulking physical presence in Momoa.

the original film is so touching, sensitive. It tells the story of a person who wants revenge and doesn't kill anything in front of him, just the right people. Even the reason Shelly died was an important detail, not because she saw something she shouldn't have, but because she was fighting for a cause. And yes, their deaths were terrible in the original. One thing that really catches my attention is Eric's feelings. In the original he is sensitive, much more sad than angry, and in this reboot they simply made him the angriest person on earth, and details like Eric keeping the ring he gave to Shelly, we won't have that in this new film. We won't have a police friend or a person that Eric and Shelly cared for when they were alive like Sarah's case. We won't have sensitivity, we'll just have a living dead man with a joker complex taking the law into his own hands.

The thing I love the most about the original film is, just like in Blade Runner, the city itself is literally one of the main characters. The musical score also goes perfectly with the incredible cinematography. Brandon Lee's Iconic performance and wardrobe are the third ingredient that makes the original untouchable. This new film has none of this cohesion. It could be any other John Wick type revenge flick if you take away the makeup and the names of the characters. Why they didn't at least change the names of the characters is beyond me. Of course, they did it most likely to cash in on people's nostalgia. I think today's Post Malone, LiL Peep kids will probably love it because that's who this is for. Actual fans of the original will HATE it! 😂

People once believed that Hollywood was where epic stories originated, that when you sat down in a theater your soul would be carried to a land of wonder and dreams. But sometimes, something so bad happens to the stories you love that a terrible sadness is carried with it and your soul can’t rest. Then sometimes, just sometimes, only the original film can bring that soul back to put the wrong things right. If the movies we love are stolen from us, the way to have them live on is to never stop loving the originals. Box offices burn, franchises die, but real love is forever. RIP BL/ED.

The best way they could’ve saved this film is using a different pair of characters in place of Eric and Shelly. If you take away the names you could make this a functional Crow sequel(?) film. But they’ve also taken away a fairly important part away from this remake. The redemption and letting go. The redemption comes in with Sarah and her mother in the original, sortof Eric forgiving himself for failing to save Shelly. And the acceptance is taking the 30 hours of pain and suffering Shelly suffered before she dies as a penance, giving it away to Top Dollar when he’s accepted that he can let go.

@@MrTrilbe They're actually alot good about the remake. In this version we actually get back story on Shelly & Eric's relationship. We get to see where it started, whilst the original gave nothing except tiny flashbacks. It's a very realistic depiction of a modern relationship which will I turn allow us to connect better to Eric's motive for revenge. It also will give us context to how Eric Draven finds his way back to the land of the living to enact his revenge, which was also never explained in the original story. It feels as though instead of altering the original story/plot they are adding to it. Which in turn will allow for a deeper perspective & performance from each corresponding actor. Now I understand the criticism of the character design choice of Eric but where it lacks in character design it can easily make up for in performance & story development. Since everyone wants to criticize characters choices such as designs why not mention that they changed a white character into a black character?? Or the fact that the villain was a young man but has now been turned to some old dude?? I get the attachment to the old film. It was honestly my favorite movie growing up, but this isn't a 1/1 remake of the original. It's a reboot.

My response that I've plastered elsewhere is: There's no sense of the sorrow of the story in this trailer. No shadows. No heartbreaking poetry. Just violence. Just lots and lots of violence. It might be my imagination but I'm pretty sure that each time I see the trailer they turn up the auto-tune on the soundtrack another notch just to keep the pressure on my peace of mind. But after multiple watches I'm beginning to suspect that, if it wasn't trying to be a Crow film, there is the basis of a watchable vampire movie buried in there. Edit: I typed that before I watched the Valen summary and I believe I may have come to the same conclusion.

The series was ok for its time (think Highlander and Kung Fu the Legend Continues and go much lower). This new one is, as you say, set up to fail. You are right, it's the aesthetics what I remember most, and the choice of music. The music here puts me off just as much as everything else and if I'm being disgusted auditory as well as visually, I can't take it. It's an offence against all senses. If I ever watch it, it will be when it becomes available for free. And that is if I remember it exists when that happens. It doesn't have any hold in my memory to try.

My problem is that why remake the story and give the main characters the og names if you’re not gonna add that sweet, melancholic tragedy? Literally what made Eric and Shelly’s death so horrible was the fact two innocent lovebirds were brutally, devilishly murdered by a gang of rowdy murders. Whether it was comic tragedy or film tragedy (tho the comic book version was WAY more fucked up cuz fun boy literally freaked Shelly’s dead body). This? This right here? I don’t see any of that innocent love between them; literally it’s like that music video of a couple smoking, sex, then fight then make up. And it’s a shame cuz love Bill, he’s a good actor but he could’ve done great in this if the director decided to make the comic book version come to life or make this into another sequel, cuz the crow itself can resurrect any tragic dead character and pay that sweet justice. In a nutshell: this is a gangster movie

What I loved so much about The Crow ( I wont call it the original cause to me there was only Brandon Lees version) was that Brandon portrayed Eric not just as a vengeful being. He was sad and crazy over the loss. Sad in a way a person who has lost everything yet is still alive Crazy for having all this anger and pain he only knew how to channel it towards his victims. I always felt like revenge movies forgot about that part of the human nature. Yeah sure you are angry that the bad gang killed your wife but where is all that pain and hurt you have inside that feeling of loss. Brandon exuded so many emotions with that character. It was a love note to death and revenge.

It really is frustrating to see how afraid Hollywood is of making new and original movies. It’s as you said this could be an alright movie if it stood on its own, a modern telling of a tragic death then revenge. That’s compelling on its own. But they had to link it to The Crow so instead of letting it stand on its own and shine with its own merit it’s putting it against something it is fundamentally not. I hope this era of nostalgia ends soon.

I FULLY agree with you on most points. Especially being that The Crow was indeed the most iconic Goth movie, for akl of us growing up through the 90's. The WORST part of this trailer for me, is the portrayal of Eric Draven. That being said, I can only hope that the reason for the original writers taking this direction is to target young audiences, and bring them something fresh, and hopefully it will at least do justice to the original film. *fingers crossed* I love Bill Skarsgard's work, most of his movies that I've seen were great, and his acting is spot on. I like how the story is a little more in-depth, and kind of gives you a 360 degree look at what really happened, and why the goons went to "collect a debt". However I have to say that most of the characters I've seen don't look "rugged" enough. It seems to polished, and pretty. I will definitely give it a chance, mainly because of who's playing the lead role. But as for how the rest of it looks, I guess only time will tell. btw I love your red suit jacket.

100% on point with this review of a movie that basically is made of tropes and plot points from several movies like John Wick, Suicide Squad, The Batman, and Punisher. Instead of the original source material and original movie, which would have been useful in making something fans of The Crow could appreciate. It’s like some baboons in Hollywood decided to shit on the original and want to bask in the glory of their interpretation so that they could make this money grab and like the Fast and the Furious franchise move forward with sequels that are far from what the original was.

honestly you said it all and i couldn't agree more. i have no desire to ever see this movie. it is frustrating watching hollywood continually taking BELOVED characters and franchises and just stealing the name but not honoring the essence of the source material or having any respect for the history and tradition around them. the first time i read the crow it gutted me because of what actually happened and who Eric and Shelly were, just people in the wrong place at the wrong and the injustice of the events would not allow Erics soul to rest. In the trailer there is a point where "time is running out to save her". She didn't need to be saved, he had to avenge and lay to rest everything so that he could go to her. James O'Barrs pain and anguish in dealing with his own personal loss and tragedy poured through every page. While the original movie wasn't 100% accurate to the source, the characters were still largely themselves and felt at least very near to the graphic novel. and you're right, the graphic novels and the movie were hugely influential on and informed by goth culture, a very hand-in-hand sort of experience. where's the melancholy, the dark macabre, the horror? so disappointing.

O’Barr actually isn’t involved on this one. He was back about 10 years ago when the idea was to remake the graphic novel and he was on record then as stating that the comic never had last names, so you could remake the original source material while maintaining Draven as sacred to Lee. Similar to how there’s a Bela Dracula and a Francis Ford Coppola Dracula. When they decided to literally resurrect Draven, he bailed and understandably so. It wasn’t an anthology series prior to Lees death and he made it that way after the incident to protect Lee’s legacy. This isn’t the original source material as even the director said it was gonna be. This lil Pep, SoundCloud rapper BS might even be awesome as it’s a modern aesthetic (unfortunately), IF IT WASNT DRAVEN. If they could completely redo Sonic The Hedgehog because the fandom freaked out, simply changing the names of the characters for this would be easy enough and I’d watch it then. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Loved your review. I was incredibly hopeful that things for the Crow in this movie would be a tilt of the hat towards all that we know and love about the original. However from the trailer you can see that all the Darkness/mystique of the character & the Gotham city type of vibe has gone. What made the Crow so iconic of the time was not only the look of the protagonist but also the world/universe the crow lives in. This feels like a generic type of world, devoid of the characters that made it so good. If you remember in certain moments from the original, there was also heart running through all of his motivations. When he gets the ring from the shop.... When he visits funboy and darla then talks to her in the mirror.... The iconic quote in the street "It cant rain all the time"... The list just goes on and on... You can tell from this trailer that unfortunately this is a complete original take on an iconic character that already has a plethora of mythology behind him. Many who love the original material will most likely not enjoy this film unfortunately. However, if I take my Crow glasses off and see this as a film that's not the Crow, I would be able to enjoy it for what it is and not what its trying to represent, and that is the character who we all know and love Eric Draven🙏🙏.

If instead you told me that this was a backstory for the Joker himself and that the crow was a hallucination, he survived his death and went mad I'd say "Yeah, I can see that." An eldergoth I can relate to those of us who saw the original when we were growing up. However, I will still watch this one just to see it for an action movie. I won't be going to the theater to see it. I'll wait until it's out on Netflix or something lol.

My initial impression and expectations are quite similar to yours Valen, the look and feel of this is so completely different that it does not feel right for me. To your point yes if I knew nothing about the Crow franchise it would feel like a trailer for a DC comics character. To that end it could be Solomon Grundy if they just had a bulked up mobster looking main character and changed a few other details. I would have been okay with that but here we are.

This should have been a different crow, or a totally different action movie. It's not The Crow. If they didn't change the aesthetic I could tolerate more of this. This trailer just makes me want to rewatch the original again.

I completely agree and have said the same thing about it being unaffiliated with the crow it'd do better ticket sales

The funny thing about the whole "new generation" thing in movies is that it failed spectacularly, I'm 30, I should have been the target for this whole reboot crap since star wars, I wasn't impressed, none of my friends were impressed, nobody thought Rey was a good and relatable character and nobody I knew in my own age bracket ever thought it was needed to change the formula that much, this movie seems like it's going to follow the same pattern, a shame since I actually like Skarsgard as an actor.

The Crow can do this for literally any soul. Why they have to rewrite and retcon THE ERIC DRAVEN really pisses me off. If they made this legitimately a different person two decades later that got the same treatment from The Crow this could end up being awesome. But the direction they went with really puts me off.
