If you had to list the things the horror punk band The Misfits are known for, heavy metal would not necessarily be at the top of the list... but right up there at number one would be their mascot, The Crimson Ghost, aka The Fiend Skull. Jerry Only himself has said the Misfits logo was more recognizable than their music, and not many bands that play fast, aggressive, punk, hardcore or metal can say that. Despite the legal battles between Glen Danzig and Jerry, their legacy is massive, and their early music holds up as one of the pillars of both modern metal, hardcore and punk, heavily influencing bands from Metallica to Greenday.
The Crimson Ghost took on a life of his own, and became one of the most easily recognizable images in heavy music. Indeed there may never be another like him...

Danzig has lucked out with getting skull mascots. He got the Crimson Ghost and even his demon skull mascot for Danzig, he swiped that from an obscure Marvel comic called Crystar in the 80's.
