The criminal justice system cycle | John E. Wetzel | TEDxGraterfordStatePrison

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Can we stop the cycle of the criminal justice system? John Wetzel, secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections, challenges everyone -- inside prison and outside in the community -- to look at the role they place in society, urging everyone to create a better environment for our children and our future

About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

God bless you Sec Wetzel, u are on point, we do need to help these men and women entering the system. We need to help those who want to change, the answer is not keeping these men and women incarcerated for years and years at a time, people do change and can change. Thank you sir for standing up , thank you for caring.

Secretary Wetzel is on point with so many of his comments. Certainly has been too many bad decisions all the way around. The onus of course is with the learned professional to initiate change through better more effective decisions that have the desired outcomes. We can't keep doing the same thing and expecting something to change! If the "system" doesn't initiate real and meaningful change from within, while promoting change from without, we will have many more young girls like the one he describes.

I'm sorry, but this guy is off his rocker. Sure there is chances for everyone out there, but there is only so many opportunities for our people to get them. Every time an illegal alien takes a job or get assistance, that person takes a chance away from another family out there in this country. So why is it fair like he claims at 6 minutes into this ? How can he say that? Hell, over 2/3 of the people who's kids are without their parents have been put in the situation because the people in power made them be there. Make smoking or using Marijuana illegal an then put people in prison for 10 to 20 years because they don't want to use coccain or heroin. But no sooner then these people decide to invade a country that grow and exports these drugs we have an epidemic on our hands of those same drugs we were supposed to go get off the streets from their source? HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE? ? ? And then something that would save our country, stop 90% of crimes, prevent most drug addictions from starting, not to mention all the benefits it has for the world they claim is from all the things they will no't stop doing. We do not need crude oil, we do not need to make plastics from synthetics that pollute the planet to produce. Every country that has legalized drugs has cured its crime problems, o r has reduced them by 90% or more. Our 700% increase in prison population only came after the illegalization, then throw in letting illegals into the country unchecked to take what jobs that weren't ran out of the country by these same "democratic" people. Look that one up and see what it really means, it doesn't mean fair and equal treatment of the people, I can tell you that. So you believe this pompous ass if you want to, but I can tell you that fixing the problem isn't what he's trying to tell you t is.

I don't know if you have noticed, but something like 90%+ of theft crimes (not white collar) are committed by drug addicts, as well as a high majority of the homeless population being drug addicts. I don't know what countries you are talking about, but surely you cannot believe legalizing drugs will suddenly reverse these trends.
