Respect the criminal code | Andrew Gason | TEDxMelbourne

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Andrew was the hardest criminal around yet integrating back into society was his hardest journey of all.
Imagine a world where all youth and community groups were self-sustainable - independent of government funding, grants, and resources. That’s the founding vision upon which Andrew Gason has built not-for-profit organisation New Civilization Builders Inc.
Andrew’s divergent youth gave him the tools to fruitfully engage with young people on all levels. As a Samoan raised in South Auckland New Zealand, he spent half his life living in the criminal underworld being involved in every crime from burglary to weapon smuggling. The conclusion was prison. In 1998 Andrew was released from jail and started to search for a new direction in life. On October 10, his story will permanently change perspectives on perceived obstacles.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

8.25min IMO the title is not clickbait, you didn't get it. "In the criminal world there is a code of conduct." I think you need to go back and listen to what Andrew said the Criminal code is. I lived by it when I was on the wrong side of the law. Try applying it to your life: 1) Don't leave your friends in the lurch; back them up 2) Don't harm woman or children 3) Don't steal from poor people. NOTE: I have seen all three of those trodden underfoot by so-called law abiding citizens. You don't have to be in Jail or have a criminal record to be a crook!

Being german speaking I looked up "criminal code" in Wikipedia. It says: "Typically a criminal code will contain offenses which are recognised in the jurisdiction, penalties which might be imposed for these offenses and some general provisions". Now the title makes full sense to me after I listened to Andrew. He really has courage and a good heart. I am very happy for him that he could turn his life around. I know how it feels to be worried that the police finds out ones crimes. I got rid of my worries too a long time ago. Thank you for your story.

Thank you for sharing this incredible personal story with all of KZread. You are a real inspiration. I believe every person can create a new tomorrow for himself and others. It doesn't really matter what happened the day or year before, or the actions one committed. It takes courage to change, and a firm belief that it is possible and within one's reach. Congratulation.

One side of this story is, how it is possible to change the way you live your life. But as I see it, partially because I work within this field, half this story is about how life decisions of other people, especially your parents, influence the life of their children unintentionally. And how reckless or careless decisions can force your child on a path of crime. First the birth-mother, who herself was 'forced' into a decision by ridiculous social standards and fear to be abandoned by those she believes she needs if she stayed with her child. Her family that could very easily described as unsupportative and would rather leave an innocent child abandoned than accepting that one of their family members made a mistake. But let me tell you: it's not the childs fault that her/his mother had an affair. Then there's the adoptive parents, who didn't tell their child the truth. A truth that could have made life easier for both sides. Then there's the adoptive mother who wasn't upfront with her intentions. Sure, many believe you need to protect your children from unconvenient truths. But let me tell you this: Children can handle the truth. They can handle truth usually better than what happens after the lie gets busted. And lies, especially these kind of lies, get busted sooner or later.

Great Video. Andrew found his own rehab path. He found what worked for him. Giving back and offering help to others is a powerful elixir for your own needs as well. My only reason for living is to serve someone else, to see them helped, furthered, saved, encouraged, directed. It gives meaning and worth to my miserable existence. Without this is the world, the world is a very hard cold and crass place!!!
