16 years isn't soon plus, the franco prussian war didn"t complelty destroyed france, as it should have been because when the prussian sieged paris people were like ohh no it's the end for france when the war ended, and france paid reparation, and gave alsace loraine people were like, it's started the beginging of the end then there was the Communist revolution called éLa commune" that erupted in 1871 where revoltuiaires occupied paris at that point France nearly fall into communist hand and would be rememebr as the first communist nation in the world but no the republic executed every peopel wearing red in paris, until the last one of them a massacre and franc in few yeras became better,and strong again iwth the most advanced militray and diplomacy in the world france quicly became OP which scared germany and was looking for allies, against france,

Technically they were suppossed to get guns from the left or the right of them (cant remember) , but instead they issued the stupid order to charge the guns, to -try and cover up the massive failure- commemorate the sacrifice made they got the queens personal poet, Alfred Tenneyson to write a patriotic poem, "The Charge Of The Light Brigade"

@@AncientAccounts So let me get this straight, to 'cover up' the assault they commissioned a poem from one of the greatest poets of the age, the words of which literally highlight the tragedy and made a regular military fuck up that happens several times a war into an immortal event. There was literally no attempt to cover it up or portray it as something else, they were all too busy trying to blame each other for giving the order.

This was one of the first wars photographed and reported extensively. Thanks to new inventions like the telegraph, the public could be informed in detail in a matter of hours. On the allies' side, reporters such as William Howard Russell acted as the first modern war corresponders. The detailed reports on the slaughter and insanity of the war (eg. the charge of the light brigade) did much, in the end, to move public opinion towards pacifism. Meanwhile on the Russian side, an until then unknown young army officer won fame for his honest, realistic literary chronicles about the siege of Sebastopol, which he fought in; they had a similar effect to the newspaper reports on the other side. After having served the previous years as a soldier in the Caucasus, the horror of this war did much to turn him into a lifelong pacifist. Shortly after he retired from the army to focus on improving the life of his serfs, but also on writing. The name of this aspiring writer, who first rose to fame due to the Crimean War, was Leo Tolstoy.

anon3261 Russians, during Soviet times, had very cumbersome attitude toward Leo( Лев) Tolstoy’s Pacifism that he voiced most strongly in War and Peace: some agreed with it, but majority rejected it. There were many Russian writers and critics, who blasted him in their works. One of Tolstoy’s critics was Vladimir Lenin, the other- Maxim Gorky.

Many many missed opportunities here. I think the shorter videos mean that you are skipping over some stuff that is still relevant. 1. Russian debt in the Crimean war and deterioration of relations with Britian lead to them selling Alaska to America since they had no plans to defend it during the Crimean war and they needed to pay war debts. 2. The refusal of Austria-Hungary to aid Russia in the Crimean war was a cause for ww1 and the breakdown of their alliance.

If I may, I would like to add two small notes: 1) The peace treaty also called for demilitarization of Åland islands in the baltic sea. They remain demilitarized to this day. 2) In Finland, this war is often called Åland war.

Well, the whole ordeal with Crimea and it's annexation was a not just "The aggressive evil Russia". First of all, Russia had good relations with ukraine, and the president of ukraine (Viktor Yanukovych, who was fairly elected) wanted good relations with russia and was against the EU. The EU didn't want this, that's why they Organized a coup in Ukraine, which lead to a pro EU president. Then the new Ukraine president decided to cut off Russia from the Crimean ports and with that the russian acess to the black sea. This would result in the loss of access to the black sea and decrease in Military power. The crimean Population (Mostly Russian ethnic people) made a vote and it resulted overwhelmingly to join Russia and leave Ukraine. Of course Ukraine does not want that (And Ukraine has a lot of Russia Etnic people, who dislike the Ukraine Government, since it promotes the Ukraine language and tries to get rid of russian language). This leads to the military action and the annexation of Crimea.

​@Stephen Jenkins You're correct with your statement, that a coup involvment from EU or US is not proven, and as such I should not have mentioned it. Still it is true that the Protestors managed to exchange the pro Russia president with a pro EU president and this lead to the crimean annexation. On the other hand, your comment about Russia's actions and hostile intentions are not justified at all. Russia is in a werid position, where they get constantly embargo in trade with the smallest and not proven reasons and have to aid the oppressed Russian minorities in Eastern Europe, which take up arms against the government since their self determination does not matter and get put down by the military.

I don't know if you've made a video on this yet, but a video on the War of 1812 would be cool.

If he does, I would hope he includes something about how other European nations viewed the US during this time period. I've heard from some Europeans that more than a handful viewed the States as Napoleon's allies at the time because of the Louisiana purchase helping fund the French along with the war itself in 1812. Obviously here in the US that view is nonexistent in public school curriculum so I'd love to hear HM's views in an 1812 video.

That bit at the end where Prussia fades in while the French are riding high was very good.

Nicholas I’s death during the war was a tragedy. I once read about his last conversation with his son and it made me cry. He was bearing huge responsibility and sense of guilt.

Fun Facts: 1. Baltic theatre is known as "The war of Åland" in Finland, who was at the time autonomous Grand Duchy in Russian Empire. 2. Because Russian main naval base Kronstadt was so heavily fortified, Anglo-French Navy did mostly attack on older fort in Finnish coast, like Bomarsund in Åland and Viapori in Helsinki. At Viapori, Anglo-French's 1000 guns fired more than 20000 shells on fortress but failed to defeat the Russian batteries. 3. Worlds first naval mine vs ship happened in Baltic, when HMS Merlin did hit one of these "Indernal Machine", invented by Immanuel Nobel, father of Alfred Nobel. 4. Anglo-French compined baltic fleet, commanded by Sir Charles Napier and Alexandre Ferdinand Parseval-Deschenes, was largest fleet assembled since the Napoleonic Wars. 5. Victoria Cross was invented during the war and first award was given Charles Davis Lucas for throwing live, shell its fuse still hissing, on to sea during battle of Bomardund. 6. Blockade of Russian shipment was mainpart of Anglo.French fleet, but fleet also raided coast, burning tar warehouses as tar was main export of finland at the time. There raid was heavily criticist on British press and by PM Thomas Gibson. These acts did bite Britain later after the war, because most of the tar was ordered and already payed by British merchants. 7. In Treaty of Paris 1856 also demilitarised the Åland Islands, and this demilitarization is continued by this day.

Mexico was nowhere near the disaster people make it out to be. France pulled out so it was a loss yeah... but nothing akin to the French army being decisively beaten or anything. They just left because of diplomatic tensions and war with Prussia looming. That's when Maximilian and the few remaining troops were defeated.

​@@paulwilson8061 probably a light Infantry Brigade sent to harass Allies Infantry before the main attack. 19 Century Empires already adopted light Infantry doctrine to some extend ,they usually equipped with Rifled Musket And Fight in the mountain or jungle

These could be one of the best crib notes video series I've ever seen. Perfectly injected levity, with occasional sarcastic undertones, adds the entertainment value ... beyond the information.

Fun fact: the Sardinian troops weren't regular troops. They were Bersaglieri. Basically Sardinia lacked the land to raise horses, so they couldn't use cavalry. The Bersaglieri were the answer to this problem, a specialized type of infantry that would withstand cavalry charges and then charge the cavalry while it was recovering. They were effective enough that even in WW2 they were quite feared.

This rebranding has you pumping out quality videos left and right and I’m loving it

Despite very little involvement, this war actually affected Austria the most as it led to them being diplomatically isolated, weakening them for the Austro-Prussian War and leading to the Hungarian revolt in 1867 resulting in the dual monarchy.

One important outcome of the war was that Turkey (the Ottomans at the time) established themselves as a European power and a vast amount of European culture was introduced to the average Turk, while Ottoman art and culture became popular in Europe.

Great essay! I learned about Crimean war in History class of St.Petersburg school, where, of course, it was presented from the Russian, er Soviet point of view, which was quite different and away from many facts. Now I have much better picture of this war. Thank you

@@EndOfSmallSanctuary97 Of course the Brits were occasionally beaten in isolated small battles across the world, but they responded to those small defeats with re-enforcements and dominated the world on land from 1814 to 1914 and they totally ruled the waves from 1740 to 1940.

@@Dave_Sisson Well, sure, they had a good record against native peoples, but the technological gap was usually absolutely enormous, i.e. the Maxim Gun made almost every battle an instant win. When up against other European powers their record was much more mixed. Won't argue that they dominated on the seas, though. Their navy definitely was the best in the world.

Because they caused internal revolution. The only nation to defeat Russia in a direct war without internal strife is Poland.

@@jwil4286 The fuck are you talking about? France won both the Revolutionary Wars (Russia was part of the 2nd coalition) and the Crimean War against them. Hell if you want to count the Napoleonic Wars separately, they got smashed in the War of the Third Coalition and War of the Fourth Coalition as well. That's 4 wars lost to France vs 3 won (they didn't even fight the French in the War of the Seventh Coalition though) so technically only 2 won... the French invasion of Russia and the War of the Sixth Coalition.
