Same here! Commander rocks, and I don't agree with everyone that thinks it should just be considered a casual format.
I'm generally all for representation, but I really don't think we need more people in a rules committee that just say "yeah just rule 0 your playgroups lol". What I get from him talking about the philosophy of commander is that, at heart, it is a "casual" format, and that the banlist is just a guide for playgroups. I don't feel that there needs to be a huge governing body just for them to say "hey you probably shouldn't play golos but it's up to you guys anyways". Afaik, the commander advisory group is pretty well diverse too and they do speak with the rules committee enough, I'd hope
Thank you for letting the rest of us get a peak and a small chance to be familiar with this magical being. @@DylanHunter64 as far as banning for power level, I think there are only a few cards that get talked about enough to possibly (and popularly) deserve a ban (Dockside, Thoracle, Ad Naus, Fierce Guardianship, perhaps a few more). About as many or maybe a few more than the number of cards that get talked about enough to warrant an unban (Prophet of Kruphix, Prime Time, Coalition Victory, Biorhythm). I don't think the banned list would immediately spike to 100+ cards as Sheldon suggests, but a progressive banned list like that, with a new ban-for-power mentality, would certainly grow much faster as Wizards continues to push commander design. Yeah, for all intents and purposes cEDH is the default format and casual commander is the variant. cEDH is a board game consisting of around 300 staple cards (plus commander specific extras), reverse engineered from the most consistent version of all the rules. Casual is somewhere between a failed attempt to utilize trade binders and cEDH. Format warping things are problems for casual when they invalidate thousands of cards, but they are advantageous for developing cornerstones of a competitive format.

It never ceases to amaze me that Coalition Victory is verboten while Liliana's Contract and other stuff is totally fine. I get the 'wait until your upkeep' is a gargantuan ask in a powerful meta, but it's so much easier to pull of Contract's condition, and it's not a dead card when you draw into it like Victory is. Also Victory uses a ton of mana, so it's really hard to hold up counter magic. I haven't decided if I'd run it in Reaper King, but it's a solid-ish spell in that deck in particular, but again, with so many changelings and Maskwood Nexus, Contract is still so much better.
@BelieMyBurial
Жыл бұрын
@@mightyone3737 having to wait an entire turn rotation makes all the difference in the world, especially when the condition required is the easiest to remove card type. Coalition Victory has to be answered while on the stack or the game ends then and there. and it's conditions are laughably easy nowadays and can be met with three cards most of the time, one of which is in the Command zone and at least one of which is a land. also, never mind the fact that five-color decks are already getting too strong and generally tend to be goodstuff piles, they do not need an instant win card on top of everything else.
@aarononeal201

You do realize that Commander isn't a DCI sanctioned format nor is it controlled by or ran by WoTc a subsidiary of Hasbro. So technically speaking Commander has no actual banned list right? Sheldon and his cohorts literally have zero power or authority for that matter to anything remotely close to "Banning" literally anything.
@breadgehog
10 ай бұрын
@@mightyone3737 The problem is that it's a relic from a time when full WUBRG was a novelty as decks go, and basic land "types" didn't exist, just basic lands. Two triomes and an actual WUBRG commander win you the game the same turn, when other wincons either resolve on upkeep or lose you the game if someone has a counter. Coalition Victory would actually be completely fine in Reaper King imo, as you'd have to actually have more than one creature. I'd be fine with Rule 0ing it into that deck.
Everything Sheldon was saying about Primeval Titan applies to Dockside. As soon as it hits the battlefield it becomes a race to copy, reanimate, etc. it. It's had less reprints and is significantly more expensive than Prime Time and that's the only reason it's not showing up more.

I feel like the Rules committee are individuals that wotc have grown to connect with and trust their assets with for consultation. CAG has been developed to fill the missing connection those few people have with the wider community outside judge circles and pro tours. From the outside it looks like an apprentice step for those wanting to be on the Rules committee, as its a platform from which the individuals opinions and decision making structure are becoming more visable to Wotc, to be able to see if they can be trusted to have a partnership with in the future. Like Sheldon said, providing for a future rules committee.
The conversation about dockside is difficult to listen to. The situation he described is definitely not what is going on at my LGS. I think the RC has become more transparent over the past few years, but part of the point the Prof was making is that there's still gaps even with some of the CAG's input. a diverse range of voices in the CAG (budget vs big spenders, casual vs cEDH, Johnny/Jenny vs Spike vs Timmy/Tammy, new players vs rules lawyers) should provide enough useful input to accomplish the intended goal, but not all those players should have a final say on the commander format. as Sheldon points out, the useful takeaway from some piece of data is when it's filtered through someone like Shivam to see how Shivam's experience is impacted. also I want to say dockside has a low floor but a high ceiling. the issue is exacerbated by the prevalence of mana rocks.
I played a game of EDH with Sheldon and called him out for not shuffling the top card of his deck. I don’t know if he did it intentionally or by mistake, but he wrote an article about it lol

Great talk between two great minds! ❤ I love these long form discussion videos. Now that I know there’s a format philosophy channel, I may be active in the discord.
Discussion about primeval titan exactly describes dockside except dockside is 80 bucks so we don't all have one... it warps every time it shows up

i feel like dockside is a worse offender because you can throw it into almost any deck and as long as the opponents plqy a certain way, it wrecks them every time. for primeval titan, you need to craft a deck around it a bit more because you need to recast it or copy it.
Loved hearing form Sheldon, loved that Prof didn't only ask easy questions either. Thank you Sheldon for creating such an amazing way to play an already amazing game
As someone who has played the format for over a decade, I loved this. It's incredible to look back at how far everything has come.
Very interesting interview, straight to the point and no restraint. I would have liked to have Sheldon's take on Universes Beyond, but aside from that, it was very informative. Thanks Prof.
This interview was a great service to this community and was entirely needed 👏 excellent job Prof. I think this will benefit us all greatly in our opinions of the RC and their methodology.
As someone that generally disagrees with the RC, I find this interview quite an interesting listen. Sheldon is quite an interesting person to listen to talk about magic, very articulate. I have watched the discord a bit of late and find it something that is quite a good bridge of communication for the RC and general base (which I have mostly been critical of not existing). Still will disagree (in respectful manner) but nice to want to hear more of the RC instead of less. I would love to see an extended interview (Also love the Prof asking about Leovold and reaction to the “No” lol)
It's great to see such rich content and definitely gives more depth to the format. Love to see important questions being asked and could be taken further with figureheads of the community rather than purely 'entertaining' content creators saying they simply don't like card x and y.
Loved the interview! Was a real treat to hear from Lord Commander Menery.
SO EXCITED TO SEE EVERYONE AT THE MAGIC SUMMIT!!
The ban list isn't about restricting your local group. The ban list is about events and travel. If i play with friends consistently, we'll play whatever we want. But if you sit down with random people, you can have a pre-game conversation but you can, at minimum, expect legal decks.

Yeah, Sheldon doesn't seem to understand that Commander isn't anything like D&D. Commander is a card game that needs rules and restrictions not imgination and a, "philosophy" that he mentions every 10 seconds.

@Hono Shirayuki except, it's WAS once upon a time. And to a decent extent it still is because regular playgroups have their own house rules, gameshops can have their own house rules, etc. It wasn't meant to be an overly serious format, meant to be something to do while bsing with friends, something also in common with d&d.

Great video as always! Really like this inside to one of my favourite games. And spicy questions too, very well done!
I appreciate being willing to come on and chat with a large figure in the community such as the Professor. While I don't feel like too much was elaborated on I didn't already hear from just bouncing around the MTG creator space, what I did realize from subtle cues is that how I view commander is *NOT* how Sheldon views commander by a long stretch. He's very much got this "it's our baby" mentality about something that decidedly is no longer their baby.

It's entitlement, and nothing more. He thinks that a select few should be able to Gatekeep the format while still calling it a "community driven format" (a phrase which he said so quickly that it sounded like one word because he wanted to get all his rehearsed PR phrasing in). It's not community driven if Darth Menery is in the driver seat and the rest of the bus is filled to the gills with RC/ CAG members.

@@Zafocaine the most common thing that I've heard since WotC started designing directly for the format is that most people hate it. The draw to Commander for a lot of people before, was using cards that just didn't work in any other format, and finally having a place to play them. Now it's just a situation where you buy the latest sets, or at least singles from those sets, or your deck is unplayable.

@@Xoulrath_ I mean this is just blatantly false lol. Powercreep is a definite problem, but I pulled a slightly upgraded precon out after stopping playing from HoD-KamigawaND and literally won a pod the first week I was there, and ended up as archenemy in a pod with a slivers player the next week lol. Maybe you're just not very good at deckbuilding and rely too much on strong cards instead of powerful synergies?
This was great! Thanks Sheldon to sharing your thoughts!
Excellent interview, despite an appalling lack of discussion about the finer points of EDH Merfolk strategy and deck construction.
hey Prof, Thank you for this type of format of video. I'm not the best video watcher but i am a commander player and it does warm my heart seeing this kind of video.
Great interview, thanks for being a hardass with him 🤟
The current setup of a smaller governing body and larger advising body is actually really clever. As he said, getting 6 people with equal voices to agree is hard enough, expanding that number (for whatever reason) would ultimately degrade its ability to set appropriate guidelines.

I think one thing to consider when expanding the RC is you can have 18-20 people asynchronously provide their input, but having 18-20 people across the world all needed to sit down at the same time to reach a decision, when each of those people have other full time commitments, you will be waiting for a very long time

The Leovold question encapsulates my personal issues with the RC as an entity. In that, until they play it, they don't seem to see it as an issue, and from previous statements and articles, it seems like their personal play groups are fairly static. So if they don't see the problem cards they don't discuss them. Hopefully adding new blood as they have done lately will accelerate the problem cards being brought to the group.

I'm still new to the Magic world but it's really nice to see the level of respect given to people like Sheldon. I love "interview Professor", you ask REALLY good questions that lead into interesting answers. Loved this interview. Bless you Sheldon!
Excited to listen to this after work!
I feel like Rule Zero convos are "How are we gonna play tonight". I'm glad he said "There's a ton of format warping cards" clearly there's also an aspect of working with WotC. If they banned say Dockside a week before it was announced in Double Masters....whoops. I think it IS very appropriate to compare bans though.
Dockside hasn't warped all levels of play because the damn thing costs $70.
You can tell by Sheldon's demeanor and answers to questions regarding commander, that he holds the format very dear to his heart and takes his position at the Rules Committee very seriously.
I think its very odd to say that Hullbreacher filtered into all tiers of Commander play more than Dockside has, when Dockside is the third most played Red card. Hullbreacher was and is banworthy, but it wasn't beating out Rhystic Study for percentage of blue decks.
