The CRAZIEST MISTAKE in NFL on CBS HISTORY | Vikings @ Bears (1989)

Спорт

In week 2 of the 1989 NFL season, KCCO, the CBS affiliate in Minneapolis, was supposed to air the game between the Chicago Bears and the Minnesota Vikings. However, for some reason, CBS forced KCCO to do something highly illegal that was prohibited under NFL broadcasting rules, and then, they tried to rectify the situation in, quite possibly, the stupidest and most infuriating way possible. This is the story behind that moment

This is very similar to what happened in Canada with CBC across all of Alberta during the 2014 World Cup semifinal between Brazil & Germany. I should point out that this match is widely regarded as the biggest beat down in the history of the World Cup with Germany beating Brazil 7-1 on Brazilian soil. At halftime, with Germany leading 5-0, CBC decided to break away from the match & show the local news during the halftime break with the intention of it wrapping up in time to show the 2nd half. Instead what happened was that when the news ended, CBC accidentally switched on a cooking program that was supposed to air after the match. This caused fans to miss Germany's 6th & 7th goals of the match & by the time CBC fixed the mistake, the match was over and viewers got to see the majority of Brazil fans boo their team mercilessly as they walked off the field. It is quite easily one of the darkest moments in the history of Brazilian soccer.

I was raised in the WCCO market but was serving in the USN when this game was played, so I never knew about the broadcast blunder. But I do remember this game, because in those days, the ship would receive news headlines and sports scores via telegraph, so I knew that the Vikings had been blown out. When a shipmate of mine, a huge Bears fan, received a VHS copy of the game, we sat around and watched what was a surprisingly close game, to the point where I began wondering if the score received on the wire was actually a mistake. Then came the fourth quarter and I was equally surprised when one team exploded while the other collapsed. This blunder reminds me a lot of the Heidi game, but on a much more limited scale as most viewers across the nation probably welcomed the switch to the 49ers - Bucs game.

KCCO-TV was an Alexandria, Minn.-based satellite of CBS owned-and-operated station WCCO-TV (deactivated in 2017). As for this situation, someone at CBS should've paid attention to what they were doing. There's no way that anyone in Minnesota, including those outside the Twin Cities DMA, should've been switched from Vikings/Bears to 49ers/Buccaneers and get people's hopes up given the latter game's finish. As a side note, I'm a lifelong Tampa Bay resident and while the game didn't sell out, our CBS affiliate at the time, WTVT Ch. 13, got to air the last little bit of 49ers/Bucs. That finish brought back some bad memories. My Bucs had the Niners on the ropes and let them off the hook.

As for the way the new NFL media deal will work for Sunday afternoon games, I can't wait because since the advent of cross-flexing, I've been wanting the traditional FOX-NFC and CBS-AFC designations to be deemphasized and we're finally getting it. I don't know what the Sunday afternoon system will look like, but a couple more Bucs games on WTSP would be nice.

A little over-reaction by JG9 as this was probably one of the first years of 'flexing' a game like MIN vs CHI which until 89 would nearly always be shown at noon as both teams were either in Central or Eastern time zone. Also this may have been the 1st year of ESPN/TNT airing Sunday Night and likely was a force of habit for the switch. Also this was not a Vikings home game as if it was, the following game would never be shown on the network carrying the game (which was usually WCCO/CBS). 'Cuz in this case Vikes were on the road, and the other game was the 49ers (west coast team) a PD would just assume no prob, cuz usually the 3pm start games should default to feat west coast games. As a Vikes fan, no big deal, and Illinois markets near Chicago also had their game switched. Looking into it about 5 yrs earlier NFC Central Games would be sometimes shown at 1pm instead of noon to ensure games for NFC central markets are shown or blacked out if local home team dictated by not selling out. This was also the time of the Packers playing in Milwaukee as so every team could be subject to the 75-mile blackout rule as Milwaukee was on the fringe of Chicago primary market.

@@veggieoilerfan2940 And when Turner gave up the first half of the year on SNF, it lead to a big battle with Major League Baseball because then-Commissioner Bud Selig was furious about September Sunday night games being relegated to ESPN2 so they were pulled from the ESPN schedule (this is when you still had many older people who looked at baseball as KING to where they looked at being moved to ESPN2 as an insult, even if ESPN2 by 1998 was available in almost as many homes as ESPN). MLB was about to pull MLB entirely from ESPN following the 1999 season but it just happened the final telecast of that regular season, Reds-Brewers that originally was supposed to be the final game in Milwaukee County Stadium was delayed six hours by rain and wound up a Sunday night game on ESPN2, which was when Selig realized it was not as bad as many older fans thought.

@@OfficialJaguarGator9 Chicago's CBS station, WBBM-TV, has been owned by the network for almost 70 years now It was founded by Paramount Pictures as WBKB-TV through its theater division. The station was included in the 1949 spin-off of United Paramount Theaters, which purchased ABC, which itself had an O&O in Chicago (the present day WLS-TV), in 1953, forcing WBKB-TV's sale to CBS (and rebranding). WBBM-TV was reunited with Paramount in 2000, when the studio's parent company since 1994, Viacom, purchased the network (Viacom was ironically founded as the syndication arm of CBS). The split of Viacom in 2006 left the film studio under the ownership of the new Viacom and WBBM-TV with CBS Corporation. Viacom and CBS remerged in 2019, forming ViacomCBS, which is now Paramount Global (branded simply as Paramount).

What I'd like to know is how this virtual non-story came to your attention, in the first place. How much digging was necessary to unearth this tidbit? Ya know... All we have to preview a video with is a thumbnail and a title, in our "recommended". When you title a video, in all CAPS, insert the words "CRAZIEST", "NFL", and "HISTORY", and omit the actual event... people are gonna assume whatever happened was going to be monumentally significant. People are quirky like that. Of course, their expectations will rise to that assumption. *In reality,* one Sunday... 33 years ago, CBS made a mistake. They switched games, assuming fans would prefer to watch something competitive. They realized their mistake, and tried to appease fans. Except for a few disgruntled fans... nothing more happened, fans moved on, and this was forgotten (until you showed up). SO WHAT? In the description, YOU said it was HIGHLY ILLEGAL. But the title says it was a "MISTAKE". Which one was it? If it was highly illegal, was someone arrested, convicted, and sent to prison? I must have missed that part. There's NOTHING crazy about this, in any way, shape, or form. I'm not triggered. Not even pissed. I'm just disappointed that a good story-teller used shifty tactics to gain views. Because he's good at what he does... I'm pretty sure he'd have gotten AT LEAST the same amount of views without shamefully embellishing. "The CRAZIEST MISTAKE in NFL on CBS HISTORY". How can you be certain that this event actually IS the CRAZIEST MISTAKE in NFL on CBS HISTORY? How do you know? Their history is BIG. So... how can you be certain? Do you have extensive knowledge of CBS's football telecast history? Are you a "NFL on CBS" historian? I didn't create that title. He did. But from the look of it... you'd think CBS accidentally told the two teams to stay home that day, creating a nightmare, because they were closed for maintenance. Good lord.

Over the last 8 years there have been so many horrible blowout losses by the Jets & Giants that I wished the stations had pulled these games and switched to others that were more competitive. While your videos are very informative, you miss the overall point. That's like saying that if you were a Vikings fan and you were at that game, you must stay at that game and not leave the stadium under any circumstances because the Vikings are your team no matter how badly they are losing that game.
