I doubt every anime artist draws their characters based on cats, but the resemblance is certainly there. The fact that the proportions mostly match is actually pretty helpfull, as it could help with finding a reference for some harder agles

As an artist, this isn’t how all anime works, it’s the artists interpretation to how they see a human being simplified. I can definitely see how some artists use animal attributes to enhance the appearance tho

@@c0py_str1k52 I think it's more a way to better illustrate the contemporary anime art style rather than a real rule. In my experience, cats tend to have quite humanlike faces, just with less of the detail and folds that often makes one look older/unsightly a la anime characters, so to make a comparison with cats is just an aid tog rasp the concept.

Kinda want to ramble as an anime fan and as an artist: It's not all like that. Stylization in art isn't uncommon, most cartoonists really just simplify things and exaggerate specific details with their art style and character design. Art styles and design CAN stem from animals, but animation and art in general is very diverse.

This is ahistorical, it’s rooted in Tezuka’s work, itself heavily pulling from Disney, something you can see quite clearly in the 60s Astroboy series. It’s got nothing to do with cats. From memory there’s some relationship to a need for greater expressiveness in a time where more fluid animation was harder to make

I've been teaching myself the anime art style a few months now and honestly this helped me understand what I should be aiming for unironically. Thanks abunch

As an anime fan who wants to learn how to draw and is inlove with cats, I can see this as a win-win

I freaking knew it! I knew my cat when facing a side ways the mouth/jaw reminded me alot of anime face structure for some reason and didn't think much of it xDD

Manga and anime have big eyes because the OG mangakas like Osamu Tezuka were influenced by early Disney Movies. Astro Boy or Kimba have the same eyes of the dwarfs in Snow White. Tezuka allegedly went to watch Bambi more then 80 times when he was a kid, the guy was obsessed with that stuff.

Well that explains the prevalence of cat-humans within the style.

That does explain why most anime characters has absurdly large eyes. More importantly, why female characters tend to have them for the cuteness factor.

The big eyes actually have their roots in Donald Duck's Scrooge McDuck who inspired the creator of Astro Boy, widely regarded as the first anime, to make the eyes of the main character large

as a learning artist this is actually giving me a great idea to create my own art style based on cat features!!

As a person who can only draw cats and is starting to draw anime characters, i see this as an absolute win :3

That's actually super interesting to me as an artist. Sometimes I have trouble with certain facial features and my anime style tends to look off sometimes. Maybe I just need to base more faces on proportions and placements of my actual cat's features.

That does make so much sense! Like when the characters are angry their some-what chibi version has like a cat like mouth. It also happens when their embarrassed. It also explains some mannerisms 😂❤

idk i kinda doubt that. seeing 70's-80's anime characters they don't really look like cats but there's been a gradual change of making the faces cleaner. also the source images are quite recent

This sounds like it applies more to modern anime characters, but I’m pretty sure not all anime or manga follow this idea. For instance, Osamu Tezuka, the artist who popularized the big eyed manga/anime style, was heavily influenced by Disney and other Western cartoons.

While I don’t doubt a level of influence, this seems far more coincidental. Especially when you consider how this doesn’t really apply to older anime of similar genres, or just a lot of anime in general. The cat line up drawings show the similarities, not the origin

It’s not based on cats, it’s actually based on neoteny, because that’s what Disney originally based their cute characters on; anime itself was heavily influenced by early Disney. That’s also why moe and chibi characters are roughly the same proportion as toddlers and children, because those are the proportions we tend to find most innocent and adorable.

I have never had a pet cat. I've always had dogs and my current dog is an Alaskan Malamute. I don't see why dog lovers are required to hate cats. They are just wonderful pets. Should respect each other..

That's interesting! I remember when watching Magic Knight Rayearth, my Dad complained for some reason that characters don't look Asian(small eyes and black hair), I feel like this is something small to complain, you know. Just because anime is Japanese and Japanese is Asian doesn't mean they have to design their characters to look Asian, because anime character design is beautiful as long as it's accurate. That's a beautiful piece of trivia, especially since I'm a 猫(neko) person.

As a 3d modeler, whenever i was modeling anime characters I've noticed they have some oddly shaped noses, explaining why i didn't nail it out back then, since I've shaped out a human nose instead

Important to remeber this applies mostly to the "generic" anime style. There are styles of animation where the facial features are not based on cats. Like Ghibli would be most obvious example.

That's a recent trend. I believe the origin of the small nose, lips and big eyes stems more from doll like features and beauty standards that have been morphed to what the standard anime face looks like today.
