    He's so fat because he is packing in all of that awesome. Every time this guy shows up in a video you can tell how seriously he takes his job. He always knows the answers to every question Linus throws his way without having to think about it, and with exception to that damn iMac, whenever he is recorded working you can see how much attention to detail puts in to the task. He may not be much of a looker but he is surely the unsung hero of LTT.

    There is actually a compound that you can brush on over shiny metals that allows you to use a standard CO2 laser to engrave them. I want to say it is called LaserMark and available from either Johnson Plastics or JDS Industries. We use it on our Chinese K40 laser to engrave on gold and stainless steel and it works great. One tip, use about half the amount of denatured alcohol to thin the concentrate and it works way better.

    I wonder why I can't buy a CPU with a detached IHS, like if 60% of people who buy an 8086k are going to delid it anyway, then Intel doesn't have to spend money on the internal thermal paste that they cheap out on. it wouldn't surprise me if they spent a hundred million dollars to find the cheapest good enough performance long lasting thermal paste. I mean seriously long lasting is the only notable trait of that thermal paste. But it's completely unusable on the high-end.

    Pretty certain IBM made the first 64 bit chip. Followed by Intels Itanium and then AMD were third to the party. AMD were unique in bringing the first 64 bit consumer grade CPU however. Although by the time 64 bit was actually being used on home systems Intel chips were more than capable. The Athlon-64's 64 bit capability was a bit of a gimmick when it released. However the Athlon-64 was one of the best consumer grade CPU's of all time mostly because of its innovation of integrating the memory controller onto the die - something all chips have today. Not really because of its 64 bit ability.

    It's totally realistic, but it would be expensive enough to limit it to a special limited edition run or something. Modern CPU IHS plates are made from copper, which is just slightly behind silver as the most conductive elemental metal on our planet. Since those are both also highly reactive metals, they corrode *very* easily, so the IHS plates are coated in a layer of Nickel, which is a non-reactive metal. Unfortunately nickel isn't that thermally conductive... but gold is! Gold is the third most thermally conductive elemental metal after Silver and Copper, and has the benefit of also being non-reactive, like Nickel. So using an IHS with real gold plating might actually *improve* thermals. As an aside, and I'm just theorizing here, but since gold is really "soft" for a metal, the wisest choice would be to alloy it with another, much more durable non-reactive metal. 90%Gold + 10%Nickel is commonly used in jewelry and is called "White Gold". It should still retain most of the thermal benefits but be durable enough for everyday use by consumers. You would lose the golden appearance, and it would just look like non-polished silver, but still be prettier than current IHS plates. I wonder what those thermals would be like!

    maybe a heatspreader made out of gold. an alloy that doesnt bend that easy. maybe 585 gold or 333. gold transports heat better, i think, so it could have had a real purpose too, by making it more overclockable. i think it would have been really cool, if they would have done something like this. maybe 100 processors for a giveaway.

    ArthursHD: Diamond is 5 times more thermally conductive than copper. Silicon carbide is sort of transparent and conducts heat really well. Or more practically: Make a liquid cooler using two layers of something very flat and clear and water between with the plumbing in the corners. Put a bit of optical paste on the heat spreader. Press the liquid cooler down onto the CPU without covering the middle.

    it's kinda funny that you took the nickel plating off beforehand because the gold will plate directly to it. and you won't have an issue with the gold getting absorbed into the copper plating over time. I've done this before when i built my own hydrogen fuel cell and needed to plate the circuit pathways in gold.

  • @LinusTechTips

    Two reasons for that: First and foremost, we didn't want to add another layer of metal on top to potentially mess with the thermals, so we took the nickel layer off. Second... It was tried on a test IHS to see what it looks like and it ended up not being all that impressive. It didn't plate to the nickel as easily as it did the copper, either. It actually took quite a bit longer and more material to get a similar gold hue on the nickel parts of the IHS as opposed to the bare copper. That said, it's likely that the reason for it not adhering to the nickel very well is because it's a matte surface, not polished. We may have had better results there if we'd polished the nickel first.

  • @daFatD

    Copper-Nickel-Gold is actually a fairly typical stack for plated contacts on circuit boards. It costs more than standard hot-air solder leveling, but it allows contacts to stay free of oxidation for a long time.

  • @digitalnomad9985

    @digitalnomad9985

    I think that nickel, like aluminum, rapidly forms a thin oxide layer inhibiting further corrosion. So the "matte finish" is not an artifact, but goes with nickel in air. That is why nickel ordinarily looks different from chrome. Silver can be polished to a mirror finish, and it oxidizes, but more slowly. To polish nickel (or aluminum) to a mirror-like finish that lasts longer than a second, you must do so in the absence of oxygen, like under a nitrogen atmosphere and keep it there until you coat it with something in turn to keep it that way (if it's something clear, you might be able to see the finish). The Gold was probably not bonding well to the oxide layer. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nickel You can electroplate nickel or aluminum on the back of a piece of glass and make a nice mirror, because the glass forms a smooth substrate and protects the glass-side surface from oxidation. Presumably, +Fat D's copper-nickel-gold is deposited using methods which would be hard to duplicate in your lab.

  • @peterkiss1204

    @peterkiss1204

    5 жыл бұрын

    Digital Nomad If you polish the surface up then give it a quick rubbing with alcohol, the surface is perfectly plateable probably for minutes. Within that 5 seconds while you put the IHS on the rag and damp the surface with the gold solution, it wouldn't be oxidized on any relevant level.

    when gold plating the thinness allows you to see the base material underneath. this is also why gilting(mercury based gold plating) has a different color, it has a thicker layering and also the mix with the mercury has an effect. also purity of gold used will have an effect.
